After selling his business and retiring from a decades-long career, Peter J. Murgio faced a new question: what comes next? For many, retirement marks an ending. For Murgio, it became the beginning of a second act defined by creativity, resilience, and literary acclaim. His journey shows that it’s never too late to change fields and reprioritize your life, as his transition from entrepreneur to best-selling author illustrates.
A Second Career Built on Storytelling
After selling his business and retiring, Murgio made the bold decision to prioritize his creative work nearly ten years ago. A lifelong consumer of books, films, and television, he realized he wanted to create his own stories. What began as a curiosity soon became a passion, proving that it’s never too late to follow a creative calling.
“I had been watching a period piece, a multi-episode drama, before retiring for the night. Then, in the early hours of the morning, I literally woke up with an idea, a plot that seemed improbable at first, but one I believed could, through careful and skillful writing, be made plausible. The premise was simple yet provocative: Could an American become king? From that moment, The Act of Settlement: The American Who Would Be King was born, and it went on to become a best seller.”
Since then, Murgio has published six books, with two more in development. “I began writing fiction quite unexpectedly,” he recalls. “I was inspired by the stories I consumed and thought, ‘I could do that.’ And I did.”
Distinctive Writing Style and Themes
When Murgio first set out to write, he knew little about the craft or the industry. The learning curve was steep, but over time, he refined his prose into a style that readers now eagerly anticipate. His writing blends vivid description with humor, poignancy, and philosophical depth. Twists and turns keep readers engaged, while endings linger long after the final page.
In a market often saturated with gratuitous or sensational content, Murgio takes a different path. He focuses on timeless storytelling built around core human experiences, destiny, love, family, and life’s unpredictability. This commitment to sophistication and authenticity has earned him a loyal audience.
Career Milestones
Murgio’s perseverance has paid off. His debut novel, The Act of Settlement: The American Who Would Be King, captured readers’ imaginations. Building on that breakthrough, he has since published multiple works, with film and television rights to his first two books acquired by a UK producer. These milestones mark not only professional accomplishment but also validation of his creative imagination.
“When I first learned that The Act of Settlement had reached bestseller status, I was stunned. I knew the book was popular, but this recognition was beyond my dreams, proving that life is stranger than any fiction I can write.”
When asked what is most rewarding, Murgio doesn’t hesitate: “Having readers come up and say they loved the book, that they couldn’t put it down, and then ask, ‘When is the next one?’ That’s the greatest satisfaction of all.” He recalls one moment on a cruise when a fellow passenger downloaded his book after dinner. The next morning, she pointed her finger at him and said, half-joking, “I’m really mad at you. I was up all night reading, and now I’m shot.” For Murgio, reactions like that are the true measure of success.
Message of Motivation and Legacy
Peter J. Murgio’s story proves that retirement doesn’t have to be an ending; it can be the start of something extraordinary. By turning his curiosity into a second career, he has shown that creativity knows no age limit and that fulfillment can come in unexpected chapters of life. His greatest hope is to leave behind a body of work that his children and grandchildren, along with his ever-growing readers, can cherish… a legacy of stories that endure long after the final page is turned.
