The effective delivery of healthcare in the United States is an ever-evolving challenge, impacting everyone. Recognizing this critical need, Edward L. Marney envisioned innovative methods to empower both medical practitioners and administrators with cutting-edge information technologies. Beginning his career working with university-based medical centers, Mr. Marney learned the complexities of delivering world-class medical services amidst unsustainable spiraling costs. These experiences ultimately led him to create a leading Healthcare Business Intelligence (BI) platform by founding TouchPoint Software Corporation.
Early Beginnings:
Ed Marney’s journey began with a foundation in mathematics and technology with a deep- seated desire to make a positive impact. Growing up around Boston’s Route 128, known as the East Coast’s Silicon Valley, he started his career in the mainframe industry, consulting university medical centers. His pivotal involvement in developing a novel, analytics-based, management system at Tufts New England Medical Center upended traditional medical management methodologies. As these new methods were being adopted nation-wide, Ed learned the intricacies of healthcare management and coming challenges, and the enhanced critical need for accurate, information-based decision-making.
Identifying the Need:
After his experience at Tufts Ed joined MEDITECH, where he supported hospitals’ challenge as reimbursement forces gave rise to the first multi-entity health networks. Realizing the headwinds facing hospitals would eventually lead to pressure on the physician groups, Ed sought to study these issues through his new consulting firm, Health Strategies Inc.
Recognizing the exponential growth of personal computing power, Ed envisioned a more cost-effective, powerful analytics software system. Seeing the pressing need for efficient and accessible BI solutions, he assembled an expert team to create the first analytics system that medical practitioners could afford and utilize with minimal training.
The Birth of TouchPoint:
In 1994, with a clear vision and purpose, Ed founded TouchPoint Software Corporation. Leveraging his solid training and experience, he established the company with a singular focus: to empower healthcare providers by putting information at their fingertips. Long before the advent of the iPad, TouchPoint’s clients could analyze graphical presentations of their information using nascent CRT based touchscreen technologies. This innovation was groundbreaking at the time, setting the standard for providing powerful access to both clinical and management information.
Challenges:
The journey to building TouchPoint Software Corporation was not without its challenges. Ed faced significant resistance from incumbent medical software vendors, who were reluctant to lose their ongoing programming fees for custom reports. Additionally, TouchPoint’s offering was not only a new product but a completely new product category, which slowed adoption due to a lack of understanding. By engaging and educating medical consultants nationwide, Ed overcame these hurdles, positioning TouchPoint as the leader in a new era of medical intelligence.
Empowering the Industry:
Tracking the industry for over a decade, Ed accurately predicted the changes that swept through the medical industry by the mid-1990s. Known as Managed Care, medical practitioners were suddenly faced with the very challenges those university medical centers had encountered a decade earlier. Access to, and analysis of, information became paramount. The same forces that caused hospitals to form networks the prior decade now were driving physician groups to form larger, network based, organizations. Having predicted this need, Ed had directed TouchPoint to create powerful data warehousing technologies to support the convergence of data from multiple healthcare organizations. Soon the very same medical software vendors that initially spurned TouchPoint began signing master distribution agreements en masse. Within a year TouchPoint had over 375 dealers, and over 1000 major healthcare clients.
Types of Clients and Solutions:
TouchPoint’s software catered to a diverse range of clients, from small physician groups to large interstate healthcare networks. The system addressed critical issues such as provider compensation models, clinical utilization, financial performance and insurance contracting. By delivering highly intuitive analytical systems, TouchPoint enabled healthcare providers to make informed decisions swiftly and accurately, enhancing both the financial and clinical delivery of healthcare.
Personal Growth and Leadership:
Building cutting-edge software was only part of Ed’s vision for transforming the medical information world. He knew that his software needed to be backed by world-class support and training services. To achieve this, he built a culture that attracted top talent by incorporating sophisticated corporate management techniques with the familial nature of smaller companies. Guided by integrity, empathy, and a deep sense of purpose, TouchPoint became a sought-after employer in Massachusetts’s competitive technology market.
Looking Towards the Future:
Ed’s approach set the bar for future analytical software products, and he continues to support these advances, most recently at the University of New Hamshire’s Artificial Intelligence meets Business Intelligence Conference. Thus, TouchPoint’s legacy continues to influence the design and functionality of new Business Intelligence solutions, as Ed continues to evolve his understanding of the application of new technologies.
