Jordan appears to represent strength and authority. Pierucci hints that readers will discover layers to him that complicate that image. Without revealing too much, she acknowledges that by the end of the novel, readers will see a side of him they may not expect.
But the true center of the story is Anna. Pierucci describes her as strong, independent, and grounded in who she is. Anna does not like to be controlled. She is strong-willed and protective, especially when it comes to her family.
Pierucci also admits that Anna can be softer where her loved ones are concerned. That vulnerability does not weaken her. It makes her real. “Anna is trying to figure out who she can trust,” Pierucci says.
As the wife of a sitting governor, Anna must weigh public expectations, private fears, and growing uncertainty about the people around her. The novel moves through that emotional terrain with constant suspense. Disappointment and fear linger in the background, and Anna often feels unsure of who truly stands beside her.
What Pierucci Wants Readers to Feel
For Pierucci, one of the most important emotional goals was simple. She wanted readers to be unable to predict what comes next. “I want them to be on the edge of their seats,” she says.
The story is filled with twists, unexpected turns, and moments that make readers pause and think, “I didn’t see that coming.” That reaction, she explains, is exactly what she hopes to leave with her audience.
How the Novel Took Shape
In the Shadows did not begin with a detailed master plan. Pierucci shares that the prologue came to her first, and from there, she allowed the story to unfold naturally.
She did conduct careful research, especially regarding the Texas Rangers and how assembly bills are passed. She wanted the political elements to feel authentic. When writing about issues such as classroom sizes and infrastructure, she made sure the details reflected reality.
The story itself still evolved organically. Pierucci attempted to outline the novel, but she found that sticking strictly to a plan did not work for her. The outline became more of a guideline than a rule.
Some days she could write twenty pages in a burst of creativity. Other days brought writer’s block, and she would step away, take walks, and return when the words flowed again.
She has always considered herself a writer. Long before this novel, she wrote children’s stories for her kids, including something called The Bean Family. She also wrote poems and short pieces. Storytelling has always come naturally to her, and with this book she simply allowed that instinct to guide her.
The Scene That Was Hardest to Write
Among all the twists and political tension, one part of the novel stands out as especially personal. Anna loses her baby. Writing that section was the most difficult experience of the entire process.
Pierucci shares that she once placed a baby for adoption. The grief Anna feels in the novel mirrors her own. In one scene, Anna holds her belly and sings to her unborn child, only to realize her baby is gone.
Pierucci describes how she once sang to her baby when she could feel her kick and move. Translating that memory into fiction was painful, but also healing. She calls it both hard and cathartic.
That emotional honesty gives the novel a depth that goes beyond political intrigue. It brings vulnerability into a world otherwise shaped by ambition and power.
Despite her confidence in the story, Pierucci admits that publishing her first book brings fear. “I’m still scared,” she says openly. Yet she reminds herself that not many people decide to write a book and actually complete it. Even if the reception is not what she hopes, she can say she wrote one.
Where the Book Stands and What Comes Next
She spent over a year working on In the Shadows, revising it carefully and approving edits before it moved into formatting. The novel is available in ebook, paperback, and hardcover editions, with digital distribution through Kindle and Amazon and additional availability through Apple Books and Barnes and Noble. An audiobook edition is also part of the release.
Another project is already underway. Her second book, titled Evicted, centers on a sheriff who evicts people, takes their belongings, and secretly makes them disappear. He goes undetected for a long time, until someone hiding inside his home discovers the truth and turns him in.
With this new novel, Pierucci plans to follow a more structured outline and refine her process even further. She says she can already see her writing improving, with clearer roles and stronger direction.
When imagining her ideal readers, she envisions people in their mid to late twenties who enjoy crime, punishment, thriller, and suspense. She also smiles at the thought of devoted readers who stay up at 2 a.m., unable to put the book down, constantly asking, “What happens next?”
Above all, Pierucci hopes readers will close In the Shadows and feel amazed, especially by the final twist. She wants them to say, “Wow. I did not expect that.” For a first-time author who openly admits she hates reading, she hopes her work will surprise people and prove that instinct, heart, and persistence can shape a powerful story.
