Soothe Beginnings: Safe and Sustainable Pacifiers

By: Oscar Lang

“As soon as I discovered the concept behind Soothe Beginnings interchangeable pacifiers, I was on board. I have worked in-hospital the majority of my 34 years as an RN, first in Newborn Intensive Care, then Labor & Delivery, and specializing in International Board Certified Lactation Consultant for the last 25 years. I wish these had been available during my work and early motherhood years!“ What made Dana Havard, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, RN, and Founder/CEO of Fresh Squeezed Lactation, endorse the Soothe Beginnings kits? It’s a combination of important factors—safety, sustainability, and reassurance.

Soothe Beginnings pacifiers are crafted with a strong emphasis on safety, utilizing high-quality materials that adhere to industry standards. Lindsay deOliveira, recognizing concerns within the pacifier industry, sought to create a safer alternative. Many pacifiers on the market are made from latex, which, while widely used, can be problematic for some children. Latex has been associated with allergic reactions in certain individuals. Over time, latex can also degrade, increasing the risk of it breaking down into small pieces that could pose a choking hazard.

In contrast, Soothe Beginnings pacifier nipples are made from food-grade silicone, a material known for its stability and durability. Unlike latex, silicone does not break down easily, reducing the risk of parts becoming a choking hazard. Additionally, silicone is non-porous, which helps prevent mold and bacteria growth, and it does not leach chemicals or microplastics, offering parents greater peace of mind. While latex pacifiers often require the addition of preservatives and other chemicals to maintain their form, silicone remains a more stable and potentially safer option for young children.

The shields are made of richlite, a recycled material made from resin-infused paper. It’s also non-porous and food-safe. The biggest mark of the shields is their environmental sustainability. The FSC has approved Soothe Beginnings products from well-managed forests for those interested in the myriad acronyms. Richlite is free of hazards listed in the Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) candidate list of REACH regulations in concentrations less than 0.1%. It also meets rigorous testing for low VOCs or volatile organic compounds. Mothers interested in safety may find their product desires at an intersection with sustainability. Being good for the Earth is often good for everyone!

Havard also endorsed the reassurance granted by Soothe Beginnings. Lindsay deOliveira put production of all batches of her product in the USA, and in addition, every batch is tested before it’s shipped out. This idea came when Lindsay contacted other industry leaders to see how much they tested. At best, one of the moneymakers in the pacifier industry is testing their batches once a year. At worst, a company will decline to answer when a caring mother asks how often they test. Additionally, other companies choose harmful designs that are easier to sell. For example, a pacifier with an attached stuffed animal is a choking hazard, but it doesn’t stop these industry leaders from selling the design. Some pacifiers are still built with a closed design, can be more challenging to clean and may harbor mold or bacteria if not properly maintained. The reassurance of regular testing and commitment to a safe design supplements Lindsay’s business choice of prioritizing safe and sustainable pacifier nipple kits.

Other professionals have positive reviews as well. Outside of Lactation specialists, Pediatric Sleep Consultant Jensine Casey writes, “As a mom of three and a pediatric sleep consultant, pacifiers are something I’ve looked a lot into. Since discovering Soothe Beginnings, my search has stopped, and I love recommending it to new parents to start them off on the right foot in their soothing journey.” Brittany Washburn is a new mom. Her family is “really looking forward to the Soothe Beginnings pacifier kit. The design is gorgeous, the material is safer for our baby and better for the environment, and the convenience makes my life easier.” Giving your baby a safe pacifier sends positive shockwaves through so many aspects of their life, especially sleep, development, mood, and appetite.
