The Amagi’s Major Career and Life Milestones

During this important historical period when YouTube and social media platforms continue to significantly impact society and culture, there is a natural interest in the stories and personal journeys of popular influencers and personalities that help drive content. Check out this panoramic view of the career and personal life of the professional YouTuber known as The Amagi.

Origins of The Amagi

This pseudonym and the name of a popular YouTube channel belongs to 20-year-old Ethan Schulteis, a known YouTube content creator. Schulteis took the name “Amagi” from the lead character of an animated story he created at the age of 12.

A Humble Beginning

Like many young people who came of age in the early 2000s, Schulteis developed an in-depth interest in animated shows such as the Nickelodeon series “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” The show provided Schulteis with a considerable amount of inspiration, leading him to develop his own animated series, “The Amagi.” He then pitched this show to Nickelodeon.

After the popular children’s network failed to respond, Schulteis committed himself to taking online animation courses and launching a show of this own. The young man dedicated himself to making the show for nearly a year before he was ready to share it with others. He then created a YouTube channel to showcase his animation. Although it was a step forward, it wasn’t very successful with viewers. Initially, Schulteis greatly limited access to the original animation because he considered it “extremely bad.”

Renewed Success

After “The Amagi” failed to find critical success, Schulteis proceeded to seek out an appropriate YouTube niche for a few years. Eventually, his work attracted the attention of Cartoon Frederator, a prominent YouTube network. With the support of Cartoon Frederator, he created additional animations in a myriad of content formats, including a top-10 video series.

Continuing to experiment with these formats, Schulteis elected to return to his initial obsession in 2019. To attract viewers, he decided to post a video that thoroughly explored the history of lava bending in the Avatar animated series. Much to his surprise, the video reached viral status and helped Schulteis uncover his true niche.

Feeding the Anime Obsession

If you are not familiar with anime or the Japanese manga graphic novels they often adapt, you may be surprised at the exceptional size of their fanbases. According to Netflix, more than 100 million viewers log on to watch anime series and movies each year. With a finale that drew in more than 6 million viewers, the anime-inspired “Avatar: The Last Airbender” ranks as one of the most successful animated series. Such numbers prove Schulties wasn’t the only person with a passion for anime and anime-inspired animation.

Starting in 2019, Schulteis began to capitalize on this passion and post numerous videos related to the Avatar: TLA series. These videos often delved into the inner workings and personality traits of the show’s primary characters. In a relatively short time, The Amagi channel established itself as a go-to resource for fans seeking to further stoke their interests. Within a year, it had amassed more than 100,000 subscribers.

A Broader Appeal

As the creator of The Amagi, Schulteis soon realized the need for this content to have broader appeal. To address this issue, Schulteis started creating similar videos concerning characters in popular manga and anime series such as “One Piece,” “Dragonball,” and “Hero Academia.” A considerable number of these content pieces now focus on the anime giant “Naruto.”

By appealing to a broader fanbase, the channel eventually gained a subscriber base of more than 1 million by the end of 2021.

Future Endeavors

Recently, Schulteis has embarked on creating a new YouTube channel dedicated to analyzing prevalent characters in fantasy-based live-action shows. This new channel, The Amagi 2, touches on characters from shows such as “The Witcher,” “Cobra Kai,” and “The Boys.”

Opera star Briana Hunter pays tribute to African legacy in Julian De La Chica’s new song cycle: Dispersed and Transcendental Chants, Op. 18.

On December 6, American opera singer Briana Hunter (“…a mezzo-soprano of astounding vocal and dramatic range.” — Jennifer Goltz, Opera News) will perform at Merkin Hall in New York City, accompanied by pianist Eric Sedgwick. The program includes the world premiere of the song cycle “Dispersed and Transcendental Chants, Op. 18”, commissioned by Hunter especially for the occasion and composed by minimalist Julián De La Chica and a selection of works by Chausson, Price, Moore, Adams, Gordon, Arlen and Sondheim. The recital is part of the Tuesday Matinees cycle and is presented by the KAUFMAN MUSIC CENTER.

Briana Hunter has been hailed by Opera News as “a mesmerizing mezzo-soprano with a fiery theatrical presence and dynamic vocalism.” She debuted in the past season at the Metropolitan Opera as Ruby/Woman Sinner in a new production of Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones, followed by her Carnegie Hall debut with The Orchestra Now in a performance of Julia Perry’s Stabat Mater. She reprises her critically acclaimed portrayal of Mother in Jeanine Tesori’s Blue in February at Seattle Opera and with Pittsburgh Opera in April. On the concert stage, she debuts at the Madison Symphony Orchestra for Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, as well as the Charlotte Symphony for Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

But this December 6th, Hunter will put aside the operatic stage and the orchestral accompaniment to take us into the intimacy of the recital format, a unique experience —in my opinion, that offers you the possibility of connecting with the music and its performers, in a very special way—almost spiritual.

The program begins with the world premiere of “Dispersed and Transcendental Chants, Op. 18”, a cycle of 12 pieces, (includes a prelude and a closing), composed by Julián De La Chica, and commissioned by Briana Hunter, especially for the recital. The texts, also written by De La Chica, are based on his exploration of the African diaspora and include poems written by Hunter herself and artist Rae De Vine. “This cycle explores the African diaspora and its cultural, religious and spiritual tradition, from my perspective as a composer. In the musical construction, I tried to find an architecture that, while maintaining my musical aesthetic, would represent different sounds that would evoke the African heritage, but applied to our contemporaneity. The African cultural and ancestral richness is immeasurable, and my idea was to build a catalytic process, almost like a rite or a spiritual practice, where music leads the audience, through that transit and path. After meeting Briana for the first time, and listening to her work, I realized that her figure in the cycle would represent not only female empowerment, but also a maternal, protective part that unites different moments and spaces, and that represents the home, mother earth, our home, and at the same time, that African legacy.” says De La Chica.

Julián De La Chica is a Colombian composer, pianist and producer based in Brooklyn, NY. He is also a visual artist (he has been awarded with two films directed by him) and also an author. He considers himself a minimalist, but his concept also falls into his philosophy of perceiving existence as a path that must commune with a spiritual and self-reflective part. In 2020, during his performance in the Beginner’s Ear’ series, a program presented by WQXR and moderated by New York Times contributing critic Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim, De La Chica asked: “How can we talk about what is happening around us, if we do not know, what is happening within us? We need silence.” For De La Chica, silence is the key, and that is why his cycles explore silence in a very accentuated way.

His work has become known in recent years on the music scene due to his constant idea of leading the public to experience intimacy and reflection. De La Chica proposes in his music very personal and raw themes, also every day, and tells them in an elegant and eloquent way.

Reading about his music, I found something that seemed very accurate in the definition of De La Chica’s music. In 2018, after iconic pianist Lisa Moore (musical leader and widely known for her vast list of records discography) released De La Chica’s Preludes, critic Stephen Mould said:“I will also add that I was not initially receptive to what I heard. However, at a certain point, I fell under the spell of this music and came to the conclusion that I was in the presence of a composer who is an extraordinarily deep thinker, someone able to take a listener into mysterious by-ways using very slender means.” I think that is precisely what happens when you listen to De La Chica’s music, and that is that when you enter his world, which often seems simple or intuitive, you begin to find an infinite number of universes that come to you spontaneously, where simplicity it hides, to mutate towards new situations, deeper, perhaps enigmatic and much more complex than they appear at first.

Perhaps, this is what Briana has wanted to capture in the program for her recital next Tuesday, and it is perhaps this combination between the aesthetic minimalism of De La Chica and her empowered vision of giving a voice to new proposals and musical explorations. “I have wanted to commission something new for a long time. I generally don’t do many recitals because I often feel we are just recycling the same beautiful lovely art songs we all adore, but I wanted to see what other subjects and styles could be explored. What voices are still missing? In the rituals in art and in everyday life, how can we honor and hold space for those seldom heard from or recognized in classical spaces? I believe this is a step. And it’s not just about romanticizing or performing trauma but finding ways to connect our past, present, and future. Music has that unique ability to manipulate and affect time itself. We are everyone who came before us and everyone who will be. I think this cycle really achieves this effect. The fact that so much of myself is included makes it even more special, and I hope others will find themselves in it as well.” Says Hunter.

According to De La Chica, deconstruct in the same way the rites, beliefs, to promote them in our daily lives, not as something distant cultural, but on the contrary, present and active elements. “Briana’s voice, powerful, vigorous and with leadership, makes it possible to take the cycle to another level. It is accepting the call and the invitation of the priestess, who invites you to an internal exploration, from her perspective, but open to the perceptions of each listener.”

Briana Hunter plans to record the full cycle Op. 18 in early 2023. The album is scheduled to be released same year under the Brooklyn label Irreverence Group Music

Paradoxically speaking, V.O.C’s Optimistic Pessimism rallies a strong message of hope against the odds

Consider your peculiar journey through life and pay attention to the paradox you walk through daily; you will find that the specifics and emotions are, in fact, not black and white but are gray and present in many shades of gray.

‘Optimistic Pessimism’ is the paradox of life. The new record by Outta Bounds Inc.’s fantastic Hip-Hop artist, V.O.C speaks deeply of the complexities of life, attacking and displaying the battles an individual must fight, and it carefully documents the array of emotions that accompanies this ruthless fight that we must win.

This new record gives an even more three-dimensioned outlook to the artist’s image, V.O.C. V.O.C, which stands for Victim of Circumstance, delineates the artist’s unique ordeal with growing up in a neighborhood particularly characterized by impoverished-many, neck-deep in drug and substance abuse and a constant grappling with crime and violence.

This new record gives a solid frame to this journey of scruffling with life’s battles.

Being vulnerable enough to use his music to express his journey and battles through, you can say that V.O.C gives and leaves a piece of himself in each track. This exalts the authenticity of his music and style as it becomes personal to him, but it also does not make it inaccessible so that his fans and audience can fit themselves in the scope of it.

V.O.C writes and produces music for all of us, and Optimistic Pessimism is one of those productions that is as hard to forget as it is fascinating.

Having been released on the first day in September 2022 and produced under the record label Outta Bounds Inc, this amazing music leaks elemental energy that gets you on your feet and pushes you to believe in yourself once again.

V.O.C, aka Victim of Circumstance, is definitely a Hip-hop artist to watch and listen to. With roots in Thomasville, Georgia, V.O.C. was born into a lower-class family and was compelled to grow up in less-than-optimal conditions. Seeing friends and family struggle with addictions, crime, face prison sentences and even death was the predominant reality he had to face.

In Soul and Hip-Hop music, he found consolation and succour. The engrossing works of Tupac Shakur, N.W.A, Notorious B.I.G, Outkast, UGK, Ghetto Boys, MJG, and 8Ball were familiar and relatable for him and inspired his music.

With unparalleled vocals, lyricism, compelling, raw and accurate storytelling, an amazing and unique sound, inimitable energy and a charismatic stage presence, V.O.C is set for success in the thriving Hip-Hop world. He hopes to create a reverberating impact with his art and go on a 10-city tour.

‘Optimistic Pessimism’ undoubtedly cements the miracle that is showing up in life regardless of the prevailing circumstance, so not victims but victors in the end.

In addition, the multi-talented superstar has produced several recordings for the video game “Cyberpunk 2077”. He is also known for his work with Polish electronic dance music DJ and producer Skytech. In 2019, MARO and Skytech’s remix of Sanah’s “Invisible Dress” received over 22 million streams and reached double-platinum status in Poland. The following year, the remix was labeled a “Top 100” song for Europe by the top music industry professionals.

In addition, MARO is also known for his collaborations with the most respected legends in rap and hip-hop, including Wu-Tang Clan, Ghostface Killah, and Raekwon, amongst others. These rap legends have made significant contributions to MARO’s new full-length album, “Rejects” (Addicted To Music).

MARO (real name, Marek Walaszek) is also the founder of Bettermaker®, an award-winning manufacturer of professional mix and mastering technology used by multiple GRAMMY® winning mix and mastering engineers around the world. Maro Music’s latest release is an adaptation of the 1979 international hit song by The Police, “Message In A Bottle,” created with Skytech; the new version was released in November of 2022 on Sony Music, and the title is Skytech & MARO Music featuring Meredith Bull, “S.O.S.” (Sony Music).

NY Weekly: Congratulations on your new release on Sony Music, with Skytech, “S.O.S.” Tell us about it!

MARO Music: Skytech and I have a really great working relationship together in the studio. We’ve done work together before on Sanah’s “Invisible Dress,” a remix that achieved over 22 million streams and went double-platinum.

NY Weekly: Wow, that’s impressive…

MARO Music: Matt [Skytech] is great, and we work very well together. On “S.O.S.,” he hit me up with this rough idea to make a cover version of “Message In A Bottle” by The Police. It’s an iconic song that everyone knows all over the world. At first, we had it being sung by a male vocalist, but my intuition was telling me that the song might be better if it would have maybe a fresh, delicate female voice instead…

NY Weekly: How did you come upon Meredith Bull, the vocalist?

MARO Music: I contacted this amazing vocalist named Meredith Bull about the possibility of joining our project, and happily, she said yes. She did an amazing job on the vocals! We loved it, and her voice fits perfectly. Also, in the beginning, the song had a strong slap-house vibe to it. Later on, during the studio sessions, though, we ended up easing up on that vibe a bit. The final result still has a dance feel to it, but it’s also suited for the radio and being played out in a hip hotel lounge or a bar/lounge, for example.

NY Weekly: really impressive that you were able to get Sony Music to sign your cover! Especially given that you were not originally commissioned by the major label to do a cover version of the song…

MARO Music: Technically, our version is an adaptation. Believe it or not, the last mix I did of “S.O.S.” was so close to the deadline that I had to send it straight to Sony Music. But we made it! I’m super happy about it and, of course, extremely happy that Sting approved it.
