Akhuwat’s Ambitious Drive to Rebuild Pakistan

How a Charity Initiated with $100 in 2001 is Tackling Poverty Alleviation and Floods in the 5th Most Populous Country of the World

Torrential monsoon rains have triggered the most severe flooding in Pakistan’s history, washing away thousands of villages. With 1/3rd of Pakistan flooded, more than 1,500 people dead, about 15,700 people injured, 40 million people and over  3 million livestock affected, over 800,000 refugees living in calamity-declared districts, and around 3.4 million children at an increased risk of waterborne diseases, the world is witnessing the most catastrophic impact of climate change. In addition, more than a million homes, 2 million acres of crops, and some 3,000 miles of roads have been damaged. Flood-related damage may run as much as $30 billion, with experts warning of food instability and disease outbreaks in the months ahead.

Pakistan’s crippling public health infrastructure is grappling with the huge challenge of rescue, relief, and rehabilitation. Due to the depleted confidence in the state, most of the flood affectees look up to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for immediate support. Meanwhile, numerous volunteers from various charities have joined the massive government-led operation and support program from the country’s powerful military to save as many lives as possible amid the surging waters.

Thousands of Akhuwat volunteers are seen working in Punjab, Balochistan, Gilgit Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh in their green vests. Akhuwat, a charitable organization founded in 2001 with a $100 donation, has grown into the biggest interest-free microfinance entity in the world, having disbursed around 1 billion dollars to over 5.5 million individuals, providing them with basic necessities. Interestingly, Akhuwat is not a disaster relief organization. It sprang to action due to the huge ‘trust capital’ and is at the forefront of flood relief and rehabilitation because around 850 offices and over 10,000 staff members volunteered to help.

Dr. Muhammad Amjad Saqib, Akhuwat’s founder, chairman, and Pakistan’s most trusted and celebrated name in the development sector, is worried about the impending winter. In a video message for overseas Pakistanis, outlining his plans, Saqib elaborates, “There are millions out of their homes, who in 8-10 weeks will be exposed to the harsh weather that will further fuel illness and death. At Akhuwat, we are more concerned about their livelihood. They are hard-working people with self-respect. Thus, we must not consider them beggars just because they need support to get back on their feet. That is why, after rescue and relief, we are more concerned about their rehabilitation. With our expertise in affordable housing, Akhuwat plans to spearhead the rehabilitation drive in Pakistan by repairing and building over one hundred thousand flooded homes.”

Akhuwat endeavors to stimulate the compassion muscle of over ten million overseas Pakistanis living in Europe, the United States, the Middle East, and across 150 other countries. With its presence in the United Kingdom, USA, Sweden, and now in Australia, Akhuwat is already forging its global network of educated Pakistani supporters who want to alleviate miseries in Pakistan.

“We urge Pakistanis living abroad, who have always shown admirable humanitarian spirit, to once again step forward and generously donate in cash, kindness,  expertise or any other form of support to sustain relief and rehabilitation activities in the flood-hit areas.” Dr. Saqib appealed.

In 2001, Dr. Saqib, along with his friends, dreamt of a world without the colossal gulf between the rich and the poor, the haves and the have-nots: “I read that the top 1 percent of individuals own 50 percent of global wealth. I deemed this not a problem but a solution to destitution if the rich were willing to share their resources with the less fortunate. Nevertheless, I did not want the rich to provide nor the poor to receive for the rest of their lives. Instead of providing them with fish every day, teaching the poor how to fish appealed more to me as it was more dignified”. This rationale worked for Akhuwat. Initially, many people donated funds, and thousands of poor people sought interest-free loans to start their small businesses. Once these start-ups made money, they paid back to Akhuwat in small installments. Akhuwat made headlines when its recovery rate went beyond 99.8%, as it was completely unprecedented in microfinance to have so few defaults. Michael Harper, Emeritus Professor, Cranfield School of Management, UK, recognized Akhuwat for its philanthropy and stated, ‘Akhuwat is breaking the rules in microfinance, and sometimes it is important to break the rules’.

Akhuwat was founded under the principle of Mawakhat, meaning brotherhood. The earliest example of Mawakhat is evident in the solidarity formed between the citizens of Medina, Saudi Arabia, and the Muhajireen-the first converts to Islam, who had fled to Medina to escape persecution. The very idea attracted the support of globally-accomplished Pakistani and Muslim professionals, experts, and researchers, who helped Akhuwat become a sustainable model.

Akhuwat’s interest-free model was labeled unsustainable by many theorists and practitioners in the first decade of its operation. Many economists expressed their doubts about recovering the loans without any collateral. However, Akhuwat consistently proved them wrong, achieving the ‘impossible’ as the ‘poorest of the poor’ paid back with full commitment. This success evoked excitement in Pakistan, a country where the rich and powerful frequently secured large loans without paying them back. Akhuwat’s success story became big news. Harvard University’s Kennedy School conducted a case study on Akhuwat in 2016, after which the ‘Akhuwat Model’ started generating global interest. In 2018, Queen Elizabeth II presented The Commonwealth’s 31st Point of Light Award in recognition of Saqib’s services for poverty alleviation and restoring human dignity in Pakistan.

In the past 21 years, Akhuwat has managed to walk the tightrope of trust while working with different civilian and military governments. Surprisingly, Pakistan’s renowned political leader Imran Khan is also a big fan of Akhuwat and called himself an ‘Akhuwat’s follower’ while launching an affordable housing scheme with Akhuwat in 2020, back when he was the prime minister. Interestingly, Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s current Prime Minister, has also been backing up Akhuwat ever since he was the chief minister of Punjab.

Akhuwat’s achievements have brought pride to many Pakistanis who appreciate its transformational work amidst mammoth challenges. Many consider Akhuwat’s operations to be the realization of the dream of the Founder of Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, which depicts a just and equitable society. Dr. Saqib’s Magsaysay Award in 2021, known as Asia’s Noble Prize, has excited many Pakistanis who believe Akhuwat can help Pakistan usher in a new era of tolerance, equality, and prosperity. The news of Dr. Amjad Saqib’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize 2022 made headlines in Pakistan and regional newspapers. Nonetheless, Dr. Saqib and his team at Akhuwat continued their work relentlessly without pausing for applause. As Dr. Saqib aptly writes in his book, ‘Akhuwat – A Journey’: “Poverty is pain and poison. We should all consider ourselves poor, even if a single person in this world lives in poverty. We will continue our struggle to make this world a happy place to live for all, irrespective of age, race, ethnicity, and religion. Above all, we must remember that poverty can never be eliminated through charity or doing business with the poor. The only solution is establishing a bond of love and solidarity with the have-nots”.

21 Questions: Joel Nunez, creative producer and founder of BookNunez

There are so many ways to describe Joel Nunez, including his methods, motivations, and achievements.

In 2018, the 28-year-old, Manhattan-based, Creativepreneur launched BookNunez, a consulting agency specializing in creative direction, video production, and events. He goes all in, whether working with local ‘mom and pop’ shops or name brands like Chase, House of Creed, Heinz, Nordstrom, Max Factor X, Forbes, and more.

Nunez also supports organizations and causes near and dear to his heart. Earlier this year, Joel produced a Suicide Prevention Month Public Service Announcement for the national 988 Lifeline, a suicide prevention network founded by the government agency Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

“Throughout my life, I’ve overcome numerous obstacles. As an immigrant, becoming fluent in English and assimilating to a new society were some of the most difficult challenges I faced. My parents were also learning and assimilating to this new world, so I never had much guidance growing up. I believe it eventually turned out to be a superpower for me because, due to a lack of guidance, I was out there figuring things out on my own. As a result of my upbringing, I’ve failed numerous times, but I’m tenacious and a force to be reckoned with,” he said.

What is your personal guiding principle?

Do right by people because you get what you give. Move with purpose. Don’t half-ass things. Get it done!

Tell us about your first job

My first job was as an ocean lifeguard on Long Island. The funny story behind this is that I didn’t know how to properly swim when I first applied, which was obviously required to pass the lifeguard test. It took some training but I got the job.

What is your drink of choice?

I like whiskey and ginger ale or Pellegrino.

Suggest a film that everyone should see

King Richard. I was tearing up watching that movie on a flight home recently. Amazing!

Are you an early riser or a night owl?

I am a little bit of both. The excitement from upcoming projects keeps me up sometimes or wakes me up early to start executing. I recognize this isn’t healthy…

Which app do you believe more people should use?

My Notes App is fully utilized. My entire life is in my Notes app.

What is your greatest fear?

Being betrayed by someone I value and love.

Where did you go the last time you took the subway?

The last time I took the subway, we went to a Mets game.

Describe your typical Sunday

No day is typical for me. Every day is a workday. Sundays are a little different in the sense that I try to spend time with family if I can, but if I can’t, then I just rest in the morning and work in the late afternoon to get ready for the week ahead.

What is one song that you know every word to?

“I Like It” by Cardi B, J Balvin, and Bad Bunny. Shoutout, Latino Gang!

Best childhood memory?

My best childhood memory was during a football game. I made an insane catch in the end zone, keeping two feet in bounds by centimeters, and everyone went insane. The ref said after the game that he had never seen a more impressive touchdown at that level before.

What is your favorite scent of all time?

I recently did a commercial for House of Creed, and before this shoot, I actually hated cologne. Now all I wear is Creed.

What is your signature catchphrase?

“Let’s make it happen”

Favorite pair of kicks?

I love my Travis Scotts! I can style those with anything.

What is the best and worst piece of career advice you’ve ever received?

Best career advice: Do right by people and be reliable. Everything else can be learned.

Worst advice: Do something that makes you a lot of money. That advice almost took me on a completely different career path – investment banking. I believe that if you can provide value for people, you can make unlimited money.

How do you keep yourself motivated throughout the day?

Keeping me motivated is not an issue. I enjoy what I do, so I just get up every day and have fun.

What would you change if you could change one thing with the snap of a finger?

The feeling of exclusion would disappear for all the immigrant children trying to figure out their way through a new world.

What is one food item that you could live off of for the rest of your life?

Plantains or bananas. You can have it for every meal of the day by cooking it differently.

Where do you go when you need some alone time?

Every year for my birthday, I take a solo trip somewhere different. I leave everything and everyone behind to reflect and indulge in new cultures.

What was the most thoughtful gift you received?

The most meaningful gift I have received in this life is support from my mother. Her support is probably why I wasn’t broken as a child and persevered through the many challenges I faced.

Restart your life as a 15-year-old with all of your current knowledge, or skip ahead 10 years?

I would go back to 15 years to do it all again and use the knowledge I have now as the guidance I never had growing up.

Eli The Bee Guy Rescuing Bees to Support Global Food Production

Hunger is a real and a prevalent problem in the world today, and it can potentially affect everyone if sources of food begin to deplete. The world relies heavily on plants for food, and that is made possible by the action of some natural agents, of which bees are an essential part. This prompted Ilya Barkanov, also known as Eli the Bee Guy, to turn his hobby into a passion and a lifelong contribution to the world.

Eli the Bee Guy has built a name for himself all over Southern California, with many people referring to him as the “Bee Whisperer.” He was born in Ukraine and started rescuing bees as a hobby when he was 15. Over a decade and thousands of stings later, Eli The Bee Guy has made it his full-time job. Explaining his motivation, he said: “We need bees to survive. Without them, we are doomed. 80% of crops rely on bees, and without them, we couldn’t get our crops pollinated, and we would die of hunger.”

On social media, Eli The Bee Guy regularly shares content about bees and their importance in the world. His content educates, informs, and entertains his audience, as he raises awareness about why people need to pay closer attention to bees and consider them an integral part of why the world works. “I want everyone around me to understand what bees are, what they do, why not to be afraid, and what to do to help the bees. We should all be doing our part for planet earth as that is the only way to ensure our continued existence,” he said.

As a bee rescuer, Ilya Barkanov goes all over California to save the little creatures. Some of the areas he serves include Orange County, Los Angeles County, Riverside County, San Bernardino County, Ventura County, and sometimes, out of the state. His job revolves mainly around collecting bees in the most humane and natural manner and placing them in locations where they can help with crop pollination and other earth-benefiting causes.

His social media channels on YouTube and Instagram have sufficient content to educate his audience more about bees and their benefits. He also looks forward to getting more people on board to see his vision of making the world sustainable by saving bees and keeping them in their natural states as much as possible. Ilya believes that everyone must work together to make sure the world’s food sources remain intact and all the critters involved are not tampered with in any way. While bee infestation is a thing that many people fear in their environment, home or property, Eli the Bee Guy makes the problem go away by removing the bees and getting them to the right place that they should be, where they can be useful to the world at large. He also has a product, Wild Honey, which is useful for its antioxidation, healing, antifungal and antibacterial properties.

Eli the Bee Guy, has shown his passion for the world and its people. Thus, his work, activities and brand reflect that, and he hopes other people can get on board to support him in various ways.

  10. Access your superhuman abilities
  11. Tap into the limitless human
  12. Get out of a state of overwhelm
  13. Break free from negative thought loops

This has become the subject of major research and study that has led to things like NuCalm, a patented neuroscience technology, a partner of the event. Jim Poole, president of NuCalm tells us “Your brain is composed of millions of brain cells that are connected to one another and form trillions of synapses. These fundamental elements of the brain are called neurons, and they are responsible for sending and receiving chemical and electrical signals with one another. When large groups of neurons transmit coordinated pulses to one another, they oscillate and generate a wave-like effect or as a brain wave. The brain waves’ frequency can be measured either in Hertz (Hz) or through cycles per second. Brain activity of a higher order will result in the formation of brain waves with a higher frequency, such as beta or gamma waves. When anyone is awake, during a normal state of consciousness, they are actually in the frequency range of beta brain waves. Delta waves are the slowest kind of brain waves, and they predominate while we are in a profound state of sleep. The same can be for many other facets of one’s life, establishing a state of equilibrium in terms of the activity of the brain is essential to reaching one’s full potential in terms of both health and performance”. Jim is just one of roughly 30 experts being interviewed during this broadcast.

Another headliner includes Dr. Michael Beckwith who is the spiritual director and founder of the Agape International Spiritual Center, a transdenominational spiritual community that comprises well over 9,000 members. During his career, he has appeared on a number of shows including Larry King Live, Dr. OzThe Oprah Show, and in his own PBS Special, The Answer Is You, to share his message with the millions of people. He was also seen alongside the Dalai Lama and other major New Thought ministers in the Synthesis Dialogues.

The Life Visioning Process was developed by Dr. Beckwith, which he shares and teaches throughout the globe, through his books and as well as seminars. At its core, the process may be seen as a means by which one can completely accept their connection to the Divine and allow the universe to serve the world through them. His message and following only grew during the shutdown with over 60 countries being represented in his online community.

Here’s just one of his impressive testimonials we came across while writing this piece.

“Michael Beckwith eloquently unfolds the secrets of deep inquiry for spiritual development, which leads to infinite possibilities in our lives.”

5 Wilderness Survival Essentials

If there’s an emergency while you’re lost in the woods, you should be prepared. Of course, you’ll have to have the foresight to pack before you get lost. Since you’re here, we’ve got the perfect list of supplies for you to bring along. Whether you’re spending a couple of days in the woods or stranded for weeks, these items should prevent you from becoming something else’s lunch.

Cover the main essentials when you’re preparing. You’ll need to keep yourself safe, feed yourself, and drink fresh water. Do you know all the edible foods in the wilderness around you? If not, you likely won’t survive as a vegetarian. You better study up on edible plants such as dandelions, clovers, and cattails (but please don’t eat the fluff).

Make sure you don’t pack too much or too little. Overpacking means you’ll have to lug around extra weight, which could result in a bear catching you. And if you don’t have enough supplies, you’ll regret it quickly. Make sure you pack just enough to keep yourself alive until help comes. We can’t guarantee when that will be, so expect them to take a while. If you’re really resourceful, perhaps you could find your way back before they gather the search party.

1.First Aid

The first thing you’ll need to pack is a first aid kit. Grab one that contains antibiotic ointment, burn cream, aspirin, and bandages. While in the store, it’s probably a great idea to stock up on bear spray, sunscreen, and bug spray. Depending on your location and level of clumsiness, you’re more likely to need those sprays than a bandage.

On the way out of the store, grab a backpack to carry everything. Note: Your backpack needs to be large enough to hold everything else, so keep reading before you run to the store.

  1. Protection from the Elements

You might feel ready to take on the wilderness with your can of bear spray because you can use it against anything, but you will need to sleep eventually. Unfortunately, you’re not likely to spend time in a cozy RV while trying to survive, so consider the weather where you could be stranded.

You will need a sleeping bag in the North to get you through cold nights. Shove a hat, gloves, and thick socks in the bottom before zipping it into your backpack. On the other hand, if you live in the South, ensure you’ve got something you can rest under while the sun’s out to get you, such as a tarp. If you didn’t dress for the weather when you walked into the woods, you’re already in for a rough ride.

  1. Light and Warmth

Fire can double as protection from the elements and protection from bears. However, it’s difficult to carry. Instead, you could use a nifty headlamp or a big Maglite flashlight. We would recommend the Maglite, just in case you need a weapon. However, if you’re planning to stay in one spot for the night, a flint and steel fire starter set is your best option. Just make sure you don’t start the rest of the forest on fire, or you won’t get the sleep you deserve.

  1. Tools

There are so many wilderness survival tools out there that would be excellent for protection and necessary tasks. If you look online, you’ll quickly be overwhelmed by the endless ads for the “best” items on the market. However, we recommend 2: a knife and an axe. Some people suggest bringing along a map and compass, but if you’re lost, you probably don’t know how to use those anyway. You can use your knife for many different small-scale tasks. Your axe will double as a weapon and a wood-cutter.

  1. Food & Water

If you still haven’t read up on edible plants, you should probably pack some food. Nuts, grains, and proteins will be the best foods to bring along when you’re ready for an emergency. Some people grab survival bars or freeze-dried food. Whatever you bring, just make sure you read the label. If you need a full outdoor kitchen to cook it, it’s not emergency food. Emergency food is anything you eat when you’re desperately trying to find your way back to civilization or crying next to the cave you’re about to sleep in.

One last thing: make sure you have something to filter your water or none of the rest of this list matters!

1907 Foundation Revolutionizes the Research Grant System

Within the medical field, the destigmatization of mental health is a relatively new phenomenon. Even just a few decades ago, patients suffering from mental health conditions that we would now consider “common” would be labeled by society as outcasts. However, there is still a long way to go, and the first step that needs to be taken is a complete restructuring of the system that funds mental health research.

Although the end goal of the medical industry is to help people, the system is currently so overwhelmed that it often loses track of this purpose. There isn’t enough transparency or diversity of opinion in the industry to serve patients in the best possible way. Those at the forefront of the medical industry are so flustered trying to provide care that they cannot pursue the innovations they should. Organizations such as 1907 Foundation were founded to change the industry for the better by innovating a new way to make funding decisions.

When it comes to technological innovations in the healthcare industry, patients should always be put first. “The development of new technology should not have to be limited or influenced by money or other external factors,” says Adam Pieczonka, co-founder and chair of 1907 Foundation. “Still, the sad reality is that egos often dictates the decision-making process in research funding — especially in the medical field.”

Limitations of the status quo of grant applications

One of the aspects of the grant application system that is especially problematic is its reliance on applicants’ resumes. The first thing an evaluator sees is the applicant’s resume, with their name, institution, past collaborators, and awards. These factors all create additional bias. Often, evaluators don’t recognize the idea’s merit, but rather the pedigree of the person who has developed it.

However, it is also the system by which grant applications are evaluated that is inherently flawed. Many grant programs use absolute rankings as opposed to relative rankings. In other words, they score each idea on a hard scale in a set number of categories rather than determining what the top applicants are in a holistic sense. This creates conflicts and places more weight on some evaluators’ opinions than others, which is not an effective or fair decision.

Worse yet, many grant funding decisions are made by a panel of only three expert evaluators. How is this small sample size representative of the true merits of these innovations and technologies applying for funding? If only one reviewer is conflicted, it can skew the entire evaluation process and cause an idea that would otherwise deserve it to be left without funding.

Furthermore, what factors determine who becomes one of the evaluators making these funding decisions? Often, it is scientific professionals who put their entire reputations and careers on the line to advocate for these new innovators and fresh minds. However, the fact that they are visibly connected to the grant decision process means they don’t want to risk their images by supporting ideas that are perhaps more unorthodox or more innovative.

Making better funding decisions

The process being pioneered by 1907 Foundation ensures that funding decisions are made solely on the purity of the underlying science. The review process used in determining which applicants will receive funding from 1907 Foundation through their Trailblazer Awards involves much greater accountability on the reviewer’s part, ensuring that they conduct the decision-making process fairly.

One of the main things distinguishing the 1907 Foundation’s grant review process from other organizations is that 10 or more reviewers evaluate the application, rather than a typical committee of three. Furthermore, each of these reviewers conducts their review rounds independently without seeing the results of others’ evaluations, ensuring they do not suffer from “groupthink.” The final round is then open to a group discussion where all marks are shared and discussion is encouraged.

The level of information collected by the system and shown to evaluators also makes a substantial difference in the application process. The system collects a significant amount of data on both the applicant and reviewer, ensuring they are matched to avoid potential conflicts of interest. This way, when a reviewer is evaluating the application, they see only the proposal — not any of the applicant’s identifying information — ensuring they make their decision based solely on the quality of the research proposal, not their perception of the person conducting the research.

An innovative software to fix the system at its core

To eliminate the pervasive bias throughout a typical funding process, 1907 Foundation uses a first-of-its-kind grant management software called Atala. This software, created in-house for their own use, was designed to make the grant application process more efficient and equitable.

“Innovation and disruption create progress,” Pieczonka explains. “The obstacle we face is closing gaps in knowledge, access, and resource allocation. The Atala software allows us to fill this need.”

Perhaps the most frustrating part of the status quo is that researchers spend 40% of their time on grant aplications. By streamlining the process through software such as Atala, grant-issuing organizations can ensure they receive the information they need for their evaluators to make an informed decision, without making the process overly-convoluted and time-consuming for the applicant. Applicants can then spend more of their time conducting research and helping people.

Although 1907 Foundation specifically focuses on funding research in the mental health field, they believe that this groundbreaking approach to grant funding can have significant applications beyond this specific field. After all, most people who apply for grants intend to change the world for the better. “By making this process more ethical and more equitable to all, we open the door to a new generation of innovators and groundbreaking thinkers,” Pieczonka asserts.

CMOs on How CEOs Should Think about Marketing

Marketing is a versatile and powerful tool. Driving sales is just one of its many uses.

When leveraged effectively, it can assist in product development, identifying new business opportunities, and informing internal communications, among other things. Smart CEOs see the marketing department as a valuable resource that can be used in developing and implementing effective businesswide strategies.

“Some CEOs think of marketing as a standalone function that is focused simply on lead generation or branding and or advertising,” says Julia Fitzgerald, author of “Midsize,” a newly released book that shares success strategies for marketing in midsize businesses. “This approach limits how the marketing team can support the overall enterprise. It gives rise to gaps in connecting the customers’ interests to the rest of the organization. When CEOs come from Finance and Operations, as many do, they may not be aware of the upside of a fully integrated marketing team.”

Julia is a chief marketing officer and senior executive with over 20 years of leadership experience, specializing in strategic work that reinvents brands and drives growth. She has led successes with American Lung Association, Thermos, Sylvan Learning, Sears, Kmart, Vtech, Hallmark, Azek, and Timbertech.

Marketing can resource the entire organization

“Ideally, marketing is seen as the champion of the customer, and the keeper of the brand narrative,” Julia explains. “Operationally, when the marketing department is integrated in cross-functional strategy and decision making, it can help sales, operations, and even HR. It becomes a resource to the entire business, providing the unique insights afforded by its direct connection with customers.”

Silo” is the term that is often used to describe a business department that is isolated from the overall operations of the organization. While silos seek to protect a department’s resources and enhance its individual performance, their overall impact on the organization at large is typically negative.

“Integration, rather than isolation, is the key to optimizing the impact that marketing can have for an organization,” says Julia. “If your marketing lead knows that a key product is out of inventory, they can shut down the advertising. The marketing department’s skills can be used to improve user experience and conversion on a websiteweb site. It can even help with HR, revamping recruiting materials if the current plan isn’t working.”

Organizations that want to deploy their marketing departments in synergistic ways should build a team that is focused on integration. The best team members will be those who thrive in collaborative environments and have a general management disposition. To play a role in assisting other departments, marketing team members should also be critical thinkers with experience in stretching resources to deliver results.

Cross-functional teams benefit from marketing insights

Julia has worked with a number of organizations in which the CEO understood the value of including marketing experts on cross-functional teams. In one case, product development and marketing collaborated on presenting a new line to retailers, giving both departments a deeper understanding of customer needs and how each could optimize product value.

In another case, Julia saw marketing, development, and IT brought together to develop and implement a strategy for expanding the mission delivery and fundraising efforts of a nationwide not-for-profit organization. The collaboration resulted in web traffic, online donations, and email acquisition increasing at a rate that eclipsed the industry standard.

While CEOs will lead the effort to fully leverage the resources that marketing can provide, Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) also play an important role. To truly serve their CEO, CMOs must be able to stay focused on the overall success of the company and be willing to pivot as resources and objectives demand.

“Staying connected on top line objectives and KPIs is great advice for any CMO working with the CEO,” Julia explains. “Marketing enthusiasts can get in the weeds pretty quickly, especially with digital marketing. The entire organization stands to benefit when you stay focused on the big picture and how to deliver growth with the available resources.”

This Company Turns Shelved Assets into $1 Billion in New Enterprise Value

When it comes to multinational corporations, business decisions are made with numerous factors taken into consideration. This sometimes leads to potentially valuable assets being shelved, even if they could have otherwise made for highly successful ventures. This is where the firm Innventure thrives — identifying and developing these shelved assets into businesses that take hold of the market in significant ways.

Innventure founds, funds, operates and rapidly scales large businesses in strategic partnership with multinational corporations (MNCs). By entering these businesses in the early growth stage and guiding them through their mid-stage growth, Innventure is helping to create the next big companies of tomorrow. In addition, their unique approach to founding and funding new companies mitigates many of the risks typically associated with building and scaling high-growth ventures.

Developing shelved assets from MNCs

Large multinational corporations will often make considerable investments in research and development for new technologies, only to shelve or abandon them because they don’t fit within the company’s long-term image or strategy. However, just because the technology doesn’t fit within the company’s plan for longevity doesn’t mean that it isn’t viable in its own right. This is where Innventure comes in — collaborating with these MNCs to scale them rapidly as high-growth ventures.

Innventure focuses on identifying disruptive technologies that fulfill a significant market need. This virtually ensures that any company Innventure decides to pursue will be successful, as there is a genuinely useful value proposition for the consumer. Unfortunately, the lack of this certainty has historically created much of the risk associated with traditional venture capitalist (VC) firms.

Identifying which assets are a fit for the Innventure model

Unlike traditional VCs, any prospective venture that Innventure vets goes through a rigorous, proprietary process they call DownSelect. In the DownSelect assessment, not only is the technology vetted to see whether or not it works, but its market need and commercial prospects are evaluated to ensure that it possesses a high potential for commercialization.

“Traditionally, people think that VC is all about high risk, high reward, but that simply isn’t the case,” explains Bill Haskell, CEO of Innventure. “With the Innventure model, there is minimal risk. Only the brightest technologies can make it through our DownSelect assessment, meaning that it is low risk, high reward. As we like to say, we always pick the winning horse.”

Innventure’s goal is to work with MNCs to help develop these high-potential technologies into companies with $1 billion or more in new enterprise value. By evolving technologies that were developed and later shelved by these MNCs, Innventure is partnering those corporations’ skilled development arms with their own expertise in founding and scaling new businesses to create a winning venture.

Innventure and sustainability technology

Currently, Innventure is focusing on funding and developing sustainability technologies because they see such an enormous market opportunity for these assets. Several MNCs have gotten into the early and middle stages of development in these technologies, only to scrap them for a

variety of applicable reasons. Innventure, however, seizes the opportunity to scale these technologies, such as PureCycle Technologies and Aeroflexx — both of which were shelved technologies from MNC conglomerate Procter & Gamble.

PureCycle Technologies (PCT) is a perfect example of why the Innventure model works. Based on polypropylene recycling technology, PCT was formed in 2015 by Innventure with serial entrepreneur and Innventure co-founder Mike Otworth at the helm. Now that Otworth has been able to scale the company significantly, he will return to Innventure as the company’s Executive Chairman.

“PCT’s technical readiness and excellent progress toward commercial operation in Ironton has been confirmed by a global engineering firm familiar with the project,” says Otworth. “Our progress makes us a leader in the polymer recycling space and reinforces that it’s the right time for me to return to Innventure. This is precisely what Innventure set out to do.”

Innventure will continue to identify new, exciting, and innovative sustainability technologies that are a perfect fit for their model. Determining which ventures will pay off with profitable results can be challenging. Still, thanks to the innovative DownSelect assessment, Innventure can guarantee that almost any venture they invest in will be successful. If one is looking to see what the next big sustainability technologies to emerge will be, look no further than the companies Innventure has become involved with.
