J. Denison Reed is the creative force behind the cutting-edge Clifford’s War series. Reed has a gift for sweeping readers away with his riveting storytelling style and compelling characters, while also keeping them wondering what is going to happen next until the very last page.  In this interview we talk with him about his recent win in the Four Seasons Book Awards, his fascinating creative process, and his inspirations.

What sets your writing style apart from other authors in the same genre?

Although I feel that I am still improving my style as a writer, I tend to write in third-person or present tense, to give the reader a feeling they are in the story, witnessing it as it is happening around them. I feel that for an action-style story, this creates a faster pace that has the potential to immerse the reader in the pages.

Can you discuss your recent win in the Four Seasons Book Awards and what it means to you as an author?

Contests are always fun and a little stressful, but they are good marketing tools that give you a few more things to discuss with your readers than just your story. I worked with Atlas Elite on some promotional projects for my books when they mentioned the Four Seasons Awards. It was a seasonal award, so I decided to give it a shot. After becoming a finalist in spring I was entered in their yearly awards and finished third. After I was notified, I took to social media to spread the word and it has created a lot of extra exposure, which is hard to come by as a writer.

How do you balance writing with your other creative pursuits, such as photography and candle making?

Life, in my opinion, is all about balance. You have to create the time to work on your passions. I have worked my photography passion, which my wife also shares, into our candle business to help with events and promotions, but she is the better photographer by far. I still work full-time as an IT professional and write part-time. But I hope to flip those roles in the near future. If you allow yourself the time to enjoy your passion, balancing work and life becomes easier the more you do it.

Can you tell us more about your small candle company and how it came about?

Candle making became a hobby that my current wife and I decided to start together, while combining our families after we both went through ugly divorces. We were broke and struggling and made candles as gifts. This caught on and became a functioning business that my wife runs, solely by herself today. She has done an amazing job by educating herself, reading up on trends, and diving into the science behind expert candle making. Please do me a favor and try one of our candles at “Reeds in the Valley.” You will not be disappointed. They are amazing.

Do you find that your experiences in different creative endeavors influence each other?

Definitely! Helping my wife with the creative process of making candles has helped my ability with descriptions. Trying to tell someone across the internet what a candle smells like is more difficult than you think, especially when a candle has layers of fragrances, with top notes, base notes, and different hot and cold throws. It challenges the mind to describe to someone, completely node-blind on what to expect when they eventually smell the fragrance. 

Outside of candle making, this still rings true. Reading aside, I have found inspiration in song lyrics, TV shows, and movies as well. 

Can you share any insights or lessons you’ve learned from your experiences as an author?

The best way to sum up is that it will not come easy. After writing is rewriting and more rewriting until you feel it’s perfect. After that is publishing, then finally marketing and selling your book. To me, that is the most difficult and uses most of my energy. If you want to be successful, stick with it. There will be highs and lows, but you have to ride the lows to help build momentum for your highs.

The book divides cooks into different categories or quadrants: the high-skill and high-passion cooks, who are most commonly celebrity chefs; the low-skill and low-passion cooks are on the opposite end, who only eat to survive and could not care less about cooking food; and the high-passion and low-skill cooks, who lack the skill to cook but are passionate about learning more. 

The book also discusses essential matters such as food preservation and safety, as contaminated food can cause many ailments and be potentially fatal. It also stresses the fact that if, for example, you are sick, you cannot cook for anyone, as that’s a great way of passing on any illnesses you have to others. The book also addresses food preservation techniques such as the ideal temperatures to store cooked or raw food in to prevent it from spoiling and smoking, salting and brining meats. The entire idea behind the book is to give a better understanding to people new to cooking and skilled cooks and improve their experience and passion for cooking.  

Cooking consists of recipes, after which the primary ingredients, temperature control, and micro bacteria will be utilized. Many elements go into making food taste good, but the key components are the chef’s desire and determination. Whatever a person’s goals in any endeavor, their desire to succeed and be great at it helps the most in the long run. After that comes discipline and consistency, two things necessary for success. The more you can consistently do in a given hobby or skill, the more you grow in that skill. 

The book teaches that you must never give up on the journey to becoming a better cook, and it’s a noble message. Many casual readers who have a passing interest in learning more about becoming better at cooking will enjoy reading this book, and it might even inspire a few to get deeper into the culinary world.

“My Exile to the World” is a memoir written by a brilliant author, Faustin Rusanganwa. In this book, he has described his life, which started in Rwanda, where he faced intense challenges while growing up in his country. Audible Publishing Services has helped him in releasing the book, so that more people can know and learn from the struggles he has faced.

This book starts with the author sharing his experience of leaving his country while escaping a neighboring country called “Burundi”. His escaping is because there were two tribes, “Tutsi” and “Hutus” who were having a big civil tension. In 90’s Rwanda, he faced a big battle and bloodshed in the civil war. The author has also shared his experience of regret and sadness he had gone through while leaving his family behind. During the Genocide, his family faced an undeserving fate and struggled to stay alive, while after leaving his country, he had gone through a lot of struggles. He eventually managed to have a decent life but the regret of leaving family behind has a scar in his heart forever. 

The war claimed the lives of 800,000 men, women, and children in the country of Rwanda. These were innocent people who were the victims of a targeted genocide that sought to eliminate every trace of their existence. It was carried out by members of a rival tribe that was living with them for decades. The reasons behind the genocide are complex, but the point of the matter is that it was a genocide instigated and carried out by the same people who knew them and, at one point, coexisted with them. The genocide was so severe and barbaric that people were chopped off with machetes and often left to die with no limbs left. To this very day, the genocide is remembered as a tragic and horrific day in the history of Rwanda, and people from both tribes meet to try to reconcile peacefully. The scars of the Rwandan genocide are felt in the country to this day, much like the emotional and physical scars that Faustin has from the struggles that he faced in his own life.  

Life is all about how you react to changing circumstances, and many of our decisions are a reaction to something happening around us. You can choose to respond in a way that can have consequences for you down the line, or you can select the path of goodness and react in a way that leaves you with an ideal outcome that serves you well. Every decision has an outcome, and we must make the right decisions in life to prosper and grow as human beings. Faustin made choices for himself that have made him a successful individual today, but he did not do this without suffering immensely.
