Introduction

In the quiet corners of a modest farmhouse, a young man, Mr. Allen, was born on March 7, 1947. Raised on a farm, he spent his days milking cows and feeding chickens. But deep within him, a spark of adventure flickered. The fields and barns couldn’t contain his dreams; he yearned for something beyond the horizon.

Mr. Allen’s admiration for his father, a World War Two veteran who survived the brutal battles of the South Pacific, fueled his desire for a different path. His father’s stories, the scent of old uniforms, and the lingering echoes of war shaped Allen’s aspirations. He made a promise to his father: he would never join the infantry. Little did he know that fate had other plans.

From Farm to Battlefield

At the top of the draft list, Allen faced a pivotal decision. His father’s words echoed in his mind: “Never the infantry.” Seeking an alternative, he walked into the county headquarters and met the Navy recruiter. The Navy wasn’t infantry, and so began Allen’s journey.

Basic training in sunny San Diego replaced snowdrifts, and the Navy welcomed him. Assigned to Balboa Hospital, Allen honed his medical skills. But fate intervened once more—orders to Camp Pendleton, the Marine base. Not what he signed up for, but there was a naval hospital there. Allen worked tirelessly, caring for wounded Marines.

Vietnam: A Harrowing Odyssey

Then came Vietnam. A chartered plane carried him across oceans, landing in Da Nang. The heat, the smell of jet fuel, and the reality of war hit him like a shockwave. Assigned to a Marine Corps Company, Allen rode trucks, delivering not only himself but also the wounded. The explosions, the fear—it was all too real.

In Alpha Company, Allen became friends with the Marines he treated. They shared stories of home, love, and loss. But one day, tragedy struck. His good friend stepped on a mine, and Allen could do nothing. The weight of war settled on his shoulders.

The Long White Coat: Inside the Lives of Doctors

Ever since I could remember, I have always hated going to the hospital. The constant beeping and the smell of rubbing alcohol all make me nauseous and don’t even get me started on hypodermic needles, a trauma I have carried with me for as long as I can remember.

I always thought hospitals were a place for the sick and the unwell. Despite all attempts to exercise and eat healthy in a desperate bid to avoid them, I have had to go to one occasionally, much to my family’s despair. Yet, I still remember how, when everything feels lost and hopeless, a kind doctor’s gentle smile and warm assurance is always what I need to know that everything will be alright. 

Angels In Pink, Green, and Blue

Quite often, we tend to ignore just how valuable the role of medical professionals is, and if anything, the last couple of years have just gone on to show how much we need them. But what is life like for these guys? That’s when I came across The Long White Coat: BOOK I: TRAUMA TEAM, by C. Robert Pettit, A story of an ER  team that is arguably the authentic portrayal of what the life of doctors is truly like.

Robert’s experience as a long-time medical professional himself shines through as he does an excellent job of keeping you vested and giving you a direct first-person perspective of what it’s like in the ER. The novel opens with a group of medical students on rounds. You move around with this group as if you are part of the team and are given the aftermath of a gruesome bike accident, an accident that will require the quick thinking of some brilliant doctors (Read to find out more; it gets pretty intense). The vivid descriptions are so real that you feel part of the action, srambling to find a scalpel or oxygen mask.

Behind the long white Coat

It is made clear to the reader that the ER demands dedicated individuals working together, setting aside their differences to serve the common goal. Along the way, we are introduced to unique characters who offer their own unique takes on the story and what life is like working at one of the demanding jobs in the world. In the backdrop is a deep, engaging plot. At the center of it all is hotshot Dr. Lewis Merritt, from whose lens we are told the story. The drama comes from the group dynamics and personal struggles while we slowly get to know each character’s lives.

Plenty for everybody

The Long White Coat is a book that will not just be of interest to doctors in the field, offering many stories similar to their own hospital experiences but also enough romance and mystery to keep even the casual reader coming back for more. Dr. Lewis must confront past feelings and professional priorities when he finds out a past college sweetheart is on the same team as his, leading to some great will-they-won’t-they moments. The chemistry is genuine, and the dialogue is intense. 

Fans of murder mysteries will have plenty to love as our main characters will find themselves in the middle of strange incidents that result in many patients’ deaths, getting everyone confused and paranoid. Try to put the pieces together and figure out who is behind it all. 

A love letter to San Francisco

Robert’s book is a proper love letter to America and shows great respect for our beloved and recognized landmarks, such as the Golden Gate Bridge. His impressive world-building gives us a glimpse into a time of music, peace, and opportunity in San Francisco as if you are right there.

The Long White Coat: BOOK I: TRAUMA TEAM offers some great storytelling, unique characters, a very engaging romance, and a chilling murder mystery. Robert has given great care to all the elements in a story thirty years in the making. It is an excellent mix of fiction and reality, and it asks some very tough moral and ethical questions the field of medicine requires.

C. Robert Pettit, M.D is an ear, nose, & throat surgeon living in Carmel, California. With an undergraduate degree from Stanford University, and an M.D. from U.C. Irvine, his ENT residency training was at U.C. San Francisco School of Medicine where he later taught students as a member of the clinical faculty. As a pioneer in cochlear implant research, he was present and assisted in the birth of that amazing treatment for total deafness. His next book, “So that All Might Hear“, documents that experience.

An award-winning film producer and director, Dr. Pettit has also spent many years as a professional ceramist.

Esther’s transition from journalism to becoming an Authentic Storytelling Strategist was born out of a pivotal moment in her career. After being denied tenure at a college where she had worked for seven years, Esther recognized the need to expand her skills and create a brand that was not dependent on external circumstances. “I decided that I needed to expand my skills so that my ability to make money would not be reliant on companies or corporations who can discontinue your contract on a whim,” she explains. This realization led her to build a side business while continuing her journalism career, ultimately giving her the freedom to control her own destiny.

As an Authentic Storytelling Strategist, Esther now works with businesses, educators, and parents, helping them craft and share their unique stories in ways that resonate with diverse audiences. Her approach is rooted in the belief that authentic storytelling is not just about sharing facts—it’s about connecting on a deeper level, fostering understanding, and driving real-world impact.

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Faith

Throughout her career, Esther has faced numerous challenges, from layoffs to the complexities of balancing her professional life with motherhood. As the mother of a neurodivergent teenager on the autism spectrum, Esther’s personal experiences have further deepened her commitment to authentic storytelling. She understands firsthand the importance of narratives that reflect the realities of neurodivergent individuals and their families, particularly in Black and brown communities.

One of the significant challenges Esther faced was securing her first on-air television job. Despite the odds, she persisted, drawing on her faith and the wisdom of her mother, who reminded her to “step out on faith.” This mindset has guided Esther throughout her career, allowing her to overcome obstacles and seize opportunities that seemed out of reach.

A Vision for the Future: Empowering Through Storytelling

Looking ahead, Esther envisions expanding her role as a public speaker and consultant, particularly in the areas of brand building and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. She is passionate about creating one of the largest cohorts of organizations supporting the neurodivergent community, with a specific focus on Black and brown parents and their children. Esther’s goal is to empower others to use their authentic stories as tools for connection, education, and advocacy.

In her workshops and consulting sessions, Esther emphasizes the importance of authenticity in storytelling. She believes that when businesses, educators, and parents share their true experiences, they not only connect more deeply with their audiences but also create lasting change. “My core mission is to inspire people to use their authentic stories to connect with each other and provide real-world solutions that not only save them hard-earned cash but also generate growth,” she says.
