Philadelphia, PA – A groundbreaking exhibition titled “On the Critical Point: Wanderlust and Nostalgia in the New Age” has opened at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Penn Museum).

The exhibition, a collaborative effort between New York-based VSDesign, DesignPhiladelphia, and ALT Alliance, seeks to evoke contemplation and connection, blending humanistic traditions with an increasingly post-human world. Opened in November this year, this innovative showcase features works by internationally renowned contemporary Multidisciplinary Designer Yan (Jennifer) Zeng alongside other distinguished artists, such as Dominic Terlizzi, Chenlin Cai and Tong Wang.

Yan (Jennifer) Zeng, a multidisciplinary designer with a strong architecture and product design foundation, is expected to play a central role in the exhibition. She will bring her unique perspective on the intersection of technology, human identity, and architectural innovation to American audiences.

The exhibition features two series of her works: “Ghost Broke The Shell” and “Alice’s AR In-Campus Journey,” which were created through a combination of hand drawing, digital tools (Photoshop, Illustrator, Rhino), and immersive technologies (Unity, ARKit).

“Ghost Broke The Shell” explores the profound impact of technology on human identity and existence, challenging societal norms and questioning the inequalities exacerbated by rapid advancements in artificial intelligence. Inspired by the sci-fi classic Ghost in the Shell, the artwork juxtaposes symbolic imagery, such as large human sculptures and cage-like rooms, with the character Tachikoma’s dreams of music, reflecting the internal conflict between creativity and technological control. This series not only critiques social stratification but also pushes the boundaries of digital and architectural art, offering a bold, futuristic commentary on individual value in an AI-driven world.

“Alice’s AR In-Campus Journey” merges the fantastical elements of Alice in Wonderland with real-world architecture through augmented reality. This interactive AR experience allows new students and visitors to explore campus environments by unlocking different scenes and blending familiar reality with imaginative, game-like elements. By using cinematic storytelling techniques and integrating AR, this work redefines how people interact with their environments, making it both innovative and highly accessible. This project showcases Jennifer’s vision of how immersive technology can enhance user experience, bridging the gap between virtual and physical spaces in an educational context.

Through these works, Yan (Jennifer) Zeng positions herself as a leading innovator at the intersection of architecture, technology, and multimedia. She has demonstrated her significant impact on the industry and society by redefining how we perceive and engage with our surroundings.

Her participation is particularly significant, given her impressive credentials. She is currently a member of the UPenn Venture Initiation Program, an AIA member, and holds LEED AP certification. In addition to her accomplishments as a Product Designer and Founding Designer, Jennifer Zeng has excelled as an Architectural Designer, specializing in data center projects that merge architectural innovation with technology-driven solutions. She has contributed to creating innovative user experiences leveraging AI and XR technologies and provided design consulting for multiple startups, leading impactful UX/UI projects across platforms. With expertise spanning Generative AI, SaaS, Fintech, HMI, and AR/VR, Jennifer continues to push the boundaries of immersive design, digital product innovation, and mission-critical architectural work.

Throughout her illustrious career, Yan (Jennifer) Zeng has garnered numerous prestigious accolades for her contributions to architectural design, UX, and immersive technology. Her AR project launched on iOS was highlighted for its exceptional quality and received positive reviews, recognizing her innovation in XR technology. She also received an Honorable Mention in the Schenk-Woodman Competition in Fall 2022 for her architectural design work. In 2022 and 2023, Jennifer was a Finalist in the Pressing Matters Publication, underscoring her expertise in merging product design with cutting-edge technology. These accolades highlight her leadership across architecture, product design, and immersive experiences, positioning her as a trailblazer in the industry.

Her artistic practice, which innovatively blends architecture, product design, and immersive technologies, has garnered international recognition. Her distinguished work has been acquired by prestigious institutions, and her work has been collected by the Auckland Central Art Gallery and The University of Auckland, showcasing her global impact on design and artistic innovation.

The Penn Museum’s rich history, dating back to 1887, provides a fitting backdrop for this exploration of time and culture. Spanning over 300,000 square feet and welcoming more than 180,000 visitors annually, the museum’s expansive galleries offer a unique context for Jennifer’s works.

As the art world continues to grapple with questions of identity, tradition, and progress, this exhibition at the Penn Museum serves as a crucial platform for exploration and understanding. With Jennifer’s innovative practice at the forefront, “Ghost Broke The Shell” and “Alice’s AR In-Campus Journey” aim to be thought-provoking journeys through the landscapes of artistic innovation.
