Some challenges she has faced in her career have included dealing with a lot of the same difficulties many women faced coming up in the film industry in the pre #MeToo era when there weren’t as many complex roles available for women. Additionally, during this time, there were far more male roles in any given script than roles for women. She always felt this was unbalanced and unfair. Wanting to change this trend and create a home for female filmmakers and writers, Lisa launched the City of Angels Women’s Film Festival in 2019. COAWFF showcases films made by women while empowering and connecting women within the film industry.

How does Lisa K. Crosato prepare for a challenging role? To prepare for a challenging role, she likes to do as much research as possible. For example, If the role requires an accent, she’ll work with a coach, or if the character has a background that she’s not familiar with, she will research that. She’s currently working on a film where her character has a medical condition, and she’s reading a lot about that condition to understand what the character is experiencing physically and mentally and how the truth of that informs that character’s world. She always likes to portray characters as truthfully as possible. Lisa recounts a stage play she did many years ago called A LIE OF THE MIND by Sam Shepard, playing the character Beth. It was highly challenging because Beth had been beaten up by her husband so badly that she had brain damage. She had to learn how someone in that condition would have to re-learn how to walk again, and she had to work with a speech pathologist because Beth couldn’t speak properly either. The play ran over three hours, which added to the challenge. She feels that stage really forces you to give everything in the moment, which can be very demanding but absolutely rewarding.
