Kelvin Teo is the founder of Filled With Wine — a Singapore-based wine blog dedicated to helping fellow wine lovers and beginners enjoy their vintages better. In 2019, Kelvin discovered that he had been storing his bottles improperly and decided to do some research into proper wine storage. What started as a personal endeavor soon turned into a full-blown blog with tons of information on wine storage, tools, and accessories. Kelvin’s passion for wine continues to grow and he aims to help others learn about the joys of drinking and storing wine properly.
Your blog, Filled With Wine, shares tips with readers about the proper use of wine storage and tools for a better drinking experience. Why do you think it is important that wine lovers and beginners know this?
I believe it is important for wine lovers and beginners to know about proper wine storage and tools because it helps keep the quality of their favorite wines in pristine condition. Wine that has been improperly stored can have off flavors, aromas, or textures that make drinking it unpleasant.
Knowing how to properly store and use the right tools for consuming your favorite vintage makes for an enjoyable experience. Also, I can’t emphasize enough the importance of having a good bottle opener, as that makes it easier to open and serve a bottle of wine with style and finesse.
What are the most common questions when it comes to wine storage?
The most common questions when it comes to wine storage largely revolve around temperature, humidity, light and movement. Essentially, having the right temperature, humidity levels, and other elements of proper storage allows you to get the best out of your wine.
Other questions I often come across include: What type of wine storage to use? Should red and white wines be stored differently? How long can one store a bottle of wine upright? All these questions are answered in my blog.
What is your favorite wine? And why?
I lean toward reds and my favorite type of wine is pinot noir from the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy. I love the complex flavors and aromas pinot noir has to offer, especially when paired with the right foods. Its light body combined with subtle tannins makes it one of my go-to wines for any occasion.
What’s your advice for someone who wants to explore the basics of wine tasting?
I don’t consider myself a wine expert, just somebody who seriously loves his glass of wine. So, the best advice I could give would be simple: be curious about your glass, appreciate it and don’t just drink your wine for the sake of drinking.
But if I were to go into detail, there are a few simple steps to get started. Firstly, start by familiarizing yourself with the different grape varieties used to produce wine. Each variety will have its own flavor profile and body type which can influence your overall impression of the wine. Secondly, familiarizing yourself with the different styles and regions of winemaking can help you learn more about each particular type of wine. Finally, practice tasting and writing down your impressions as much as possible. Taste alongside a knowledgeable friend or attend organized tastings where experts can advise on how to improve your tasting skills.
What’s next for Filled With Wine?
We will continue to put out useful content aimed at wine lovers and beginners who are interested to step into the world of wine. It is my hope that Filled With Wine will eventually become a globally-recognized wine blog that many will take reference to and learn from when it comes to the topic of wine.
