When Arash was graduating from his Master’s program at Columbia University, the Director of the school gave him some sound advice that changed the trajectory of his career. He was advised that it is always best to start your career at large corporations, since there is greater access to resources and senior mentorship, and then to move over to smaller companies where the honed skillset could have a significantly more impact in the long term. And that is exactly what Arash did, which has helped propel his career to a director role at Explora Ventures. Furthermore, at the age of 26 he was appointed as one of the youngest adjunct professors at his alma mater, Columbia University, an astonishing accomplishment for someone of his age.

After graduating from Columbia in 2016, Arash pursued a career first at the large financial conglomerate American International Group, then Drake Real Estate Partners, and now Explora Ventures. The research methods he mastered over the years became a transferable skillset that he was able to successfully utilize at Drake to help lead the firm’s operating and capital raising strategies. His work had quickly started to stand out at Drake and he was directly reporting to the firm’s owners and partners.

His success at Drake did not go unnoticed and he was soon asked whether he would be willing to teach a class at Columbia University. “That was probably one of the proudest moments of my life and one of the greatest achievements I have accomplished to date. There is something so fulfilling about sharing your knowledge and experience with a younger generation and knowing that they will be able to take that with them and have their own profound impact on the world and global economy”, says Arash with a smile as he expresses his satisfaction for giving back to the community.

It took a lot of hard work and perseverance to manage the long hours working for Drake and also teaching the class in the evenings. Given the immense responsibility that was placed on him as an adjunct professor at an internationally recognized Ivy League institution, Arash took the class very seriously, fully rebuilding the curriculum and teaching structure. “What the program lacked was an emphasis on using real world cases to teach”, recalls Arash. This would make complex and sometimes abstract quantitative and economic concepts more comprehensible for the students. As such, he used real world case studies from his work to devise the teaching curriculum and cover the required concepts. The teaching method proved to be extremely effective, with the class becoming an instant hit among the students and achieving outsized participation in the program. He even singlehandedly evaluates the final case study work of every participant in his classes of 140+ students, demonstrating the dedication to his work at Columbia.

 

 

Lory Wynn Advocates for Wolves Through Guardians of the Wolves

The story of the big bad wolf that wanted to eat the three little pigs has created a stigma across the globe that this furry creature is up to no good and only exists to cause harm to other living creatures. Today, ranchers are still anxious about the idea of wolves entering the vicinity of their farms for fear that they will slaughter their livestock. Wolf lover and wildlife advocate Lori Wynn hopes to change the image of wolves by promoting their protection and safety through Guardians of the Wolves, an organization built on passion and dedication. 

Lori’s journey in wolf preservation started in 2011 when the first wolf was documented to have entered California in almost 100 years. There was an instant fear among ranchers, thinking that the wolf would attack their cattle and their children at the same time. Together with her wolf-dog, Ambassador Sage, Lori started traveling to start an advocacy very close to her heart. She started speaking at the California Fish and Wildlife meetings to educate the public about the unfounded idea of the big bad wolf. 

Due to hers and others’ passionate efforts, the state of California decided to actively protect the wolves. She has already done educational programs with kids, hospice work, events, and assisted living; and Lori is determined to expand this advocacy to the rest of the country. “Today, they are not on the endangered species list federally, and many states are eradicating them. This has become a heart project for me. Ambassador Sage was one of the most accomplished female wolf dogs of all time. She passed away early 2020,” Lori shared. 

Today, Lori is focused on nurturing her new wolf dog pup, an ambassador in training named Rosemary. She will continue the legacy that Sage established, one that will benefit wolves for many years to come through wolf-dog education. Preservation Through Education is a thriving program that Lori and Sage successfully established, and it is expected to impact wildlife preservation efforts long-term.

Guardians of the Wolves upholds a three-part approach in its advocacy: preserving the legacy of wolves and wolf dogs through Education, responsible stewardship, and rescue. Its noble vision involves seeing all wolves and wolf dogs afforded the rights they deserve to survive and be protected. Just like all other animals, the organization intended to raise well-informed communities that will actively treat these living creatures with respect and kindness. 

“My organization educates that there is no such thing as a big bad wolf. We educate for responsible wolf dog ownership, and we are very involved in wolf-dog rescue and sanctuary,” Lori explained. 

Guardians of the Wolves intends to start educating young kids first by teaching them the importance of the wolves in the complex wildlife ecosystem. Next to young kids, the organization aspires to educate ranchers on non-lethal wolf management. The effort also involves teaching people about the nature of wolf-dogs so that less and less of them will end up in rescue. 

As she continues to promote the advocacies of Guardians of the Wolves, Lori sees herself speaking in front of bigger audiences across the country in the near future. It is her earnest hope that as she shares her love for wildlife, more and more people will commit to helping out.

“Day after day, I was watching one bad decision being made after another. And I simply couldn’t handle it anymore. The people making the decisions weren’t affected by the outcome, but if they would have been affected, their decision making would have been most likely different,” Tropepe said.

“The hospitality industry suffered the most casualties. As more and more time passed, I couldn’t understand why a qualified person from the industry did not write a book. Nearly twenty thousand books were published on the subject of COVID-19, but not one dedicated to the hospitality industry,” Tropepe said.

From politician’s hypocritical behavior, to the infringement of civil liberties and the concept of free enterprise, Chef Tropepe covers every base in his fifteen-chapter book.

“This was a very challenging book to write for a number of reasons. To start, I am not a political person. I have my views, and I am a very diplomatic and an independent thinker. It’s my belief that good policies know no political party. So, to write a book on a subject that collapsed my industry and that was so politicized was without doubt a challenge. Second is that COVID-19 isn’t over. We have seen a wide variety of variants and a new variant stemming from South Africa just recently. It sort of feels like this constant dark cloud over us,” said Chef Tropepe.

“There are a lot of unanswered questions and a lot of questions purposely unasked in my opinion. I believe that Dr. Fauci is not being as forthright as he should be and many things just make little sense. It’s a shame because for all the losses—the loss of life, jobs, careers, businesses—the truth is we will never get a full truth. We will be told the information that the powers that be want to tell us, and the American people deserve the unaltered and uncompromised truth. I can not make that happen, but what I can and did do was present the unaltered truth about what transpired in the hospitality industry. All I can do now is hope I did my part well enough,” concludes Tropepe.
