Hailing from Anchorage, Alaska, Blackbird is a 6-time Native American Music Award-winning band that is redefining the rock genre with their unique blend of Native American flute and contemporary rock. Co-founded by brothers Cody and Caleb Blackbird, the band has created a niche genre they proudly refer to as “Alter-Native” Rock. Blackbird’s innovative sound and commitment to preserving Indigenous culture through music have garnered them a significant following and critical acclaim.

Cody Blackbird, celebrated as one of the Native American flutists touring today, and his brother Caleb have led Blackbird to share the bill with renowned artists such as The Black-Eyed Peas, Wayne Newton, John Trudell, Jewel, Jason Mraz, Blues Traveler and more. The band’s first two studio albums were produced by Kenny Lee Lewis of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted Steve Miller Band, setting a high bar for their musical journey. In 2021, Blackbird was featured in Rolling Stone magazine for their collaboration with fellow Alaskans and GRAMMY winners, Portugal The Man. This recognition propelled them further into the spotlight and has helped to solidify their place within the music industry.

Their latest album, “Existence is Resistance,” was produced by Jason Cropper, co-founder of WEEZER, and features collaborations with John Popper of Blues Traveler on three tracks. This album is a testament to Blackbird’s evolving sound and their ability to fuse traditional Indigenous instrumentation with contemporary rock, creating a compelling and original musical experience. The band’s lyricism and musical platform highlight the importance of finding purpose and preserving cultural heritage, making them not only musicians but also cultural ambassadors.

“Blackbird knows how to bring the heart and soul,” says Bibi McGill, former Musical Director/guitarist for Beyoncé, highlighting the band’s ability to connect deeply with their audience. Mike Posner also praises their unique sound, stating, “That’s some serious flute.” Rolling Stone magazine encapsulates their impact succinctly, calling their music “rousing.”

What sets Blackbird apart in a crowded music scene is their distinct blend of genres and their use of the Native American flute as a lead instrument. This incorporation of traditional elements into modern rock music creates a sound that is both innovative and deeply rooted in culture. A live Blackbird performance is truly an experience that transcends any one genre, their dynamic and heartfelt delivery captivates audiences regardless of personal musical taste.
