Like many advancements in technology, open source development has been gaining popularity over the past ten years. Back in 2015, 78% of companies were running their operations on open source software (OSS), and now, that number has risen to 90%. OSS isn’t a new concept, but it’s become a de facto arm of software development in recent years.

So, what is OSS? It’s software with publicly available source code that third-party programmers can modify, deconstruct, or upgrade for free. This software is maintained by its community and relies on public support for financial backing if ever needed. You can also say that OSS is “owned by the public”, and there are more than 80 types of open source licenses that grant users and developers different rights. Some of the most well-known OSS are VLC Media, GIMP, Linux, Firefox, and jQuery.

The opposite of OSS that many people are more familiar with (in practice, if not in name) is called “proprietary software”. The company owns the source code and all rights to a product, and little, if anything, is made publicly available. The software is either maintained internally or is outsourced to a third-party of developers that the company selects and pays. Consumers have the option to pay for the software outright or can pay a subscription fee, which is another popular trend among software and services today.

Thinking in simple terms, it might seem obvious that a company should prioritize proprietary software over OSS. They get to keep the rights, they have full control over development, and they’re able to charge for products. So, passing that onto the community might come across as an unnecessary loss.

The agricultural sector, responsible for feeding the world, is struggling to keep up with the demand. According to projections, the expected population of over 10 billion people in 2050 requires a two-fold increase in current food production. Unfortunately, the yields of the world’s staple food commodities are increasing at a rate far lower than the 2.4% per year required to achieve this goal. Compounding the problem is the steep labor costs and shrinking agricultural labor supply. To address these issues, increasing the yield efficiency is necessary. Machine vision has the potential to increase yield efficiency by enabling automated agricultural crop/fruit picking, ripeness detection, yield estimation, and fruit counting.

Yield Efficiency of Current Methods

Conventional agricultural crop/fruit picking, ripeness detection, yield estimation, and fruit counting techniques, such as mechanical harvesting and manual sampling, have been used for centuries, if not longer. These methods can be labor-intensive, time-consuming, and prone to human error, leading to decreased yield efficiencies.

Many commercially available depth sensors, which find use in machine vision systems in this industry, have a very limited framerate. For instance, the current version of the Kinect’s acquisition speed is limited to 30 frames per second. This makes it unsuitable for applications that require high throughput, like online quality inspection and phenotyping systems.

In contrast, Structured Light Based Machine Vision Systems offer a solution to these challenges. By enabling automated picking and counting, the system can increase yield efficiencies and reduce labor costs. The high speed and sub-millimeter accuracy of the system allow for precise yield estimation, which can help farmers make data-driven decisions to optimize their production processes. Ultimately, the structured light system has the potential to outperform traditional methods in terms of yield efficiency and accuracy, making it a promising solution for farmers looking to increase their productivity and profitability.

Gartner backs this finding with reports that cloud spend has hit $600 billion a year. This makes cloud spend the fastest growing expense category for tech companies

This divide is what prompted Pump.co to launch its free-to-use platform, which caters specifically to start-ups. Smaller businesses with a large enough spend have a chance to get high discounts through Pump’s Groupon-style group buying model. To find the best savings, Pump’s proprietary AI models are trained to forecast a client’s individual spend based on their individual historic spend data and the collective customer spend data. The AI will then manage discounts and auto-purchase commitments on a client’s behalf to ensure that they get the maximum discount.

  • Fully automated cost savings. By using advanced AI algorithms, Pump.co automatically identifies areas where cost savings can be achieved. This provides instant algorithmic buying and selling of savings products on behalf of customers. Pump offers savings on 12 different AWS services including EC2, RDS, ECS, and more.
  • Group buying. Pump also offers additional savings through group and collective spend billing discounts at scale. This model allows them to monetize their operations through AWS instead of from customers.
  • Unused resources insurance. In the event of overcommitment resulting from unused savings plans or reserved instances that Pump has purchased within any 30-day period, they provide a full AWS credit hence taking away the financial risk for customers.

Pump claims that the platform requires no engineering efforts, allowing for quick deployment. This also allows for operational security as the platform will only have read-only permissions, similar to coupon codes that you add to your shopping cart to get instant discounts.

The company is currently backed by Y Combinator and has reported that over 100 customers have saved over $3M to date. The founding team consists of serial entrepreneurs with a prior exit, and Pump was featured on Forbes AI 50, America’s 50 most promising companies in AI, in 2021. Pump is also an “Advanced Tier Partner” with AWS with several AWS certifications.
