The Mint, in Los Angeles, California is on a reversal countdown to present for the first time in it’s 85 year history a Mariachi Band: Mariachi Quinto Sol! 

Mariachi Quinto Sol is a modern mariachi sextet who are introducing their musical heritage to new audiences at home and abroad. The group, led by musical director Robert Diaz, made their debut in 2018. Since then they have circled the globe, sharing their unique mix of traditional and modern Mexican music with new fans everywhere, young and old.

In addition to their international travels, the band is making big waves at home. They are breaking down cultural barriers in some of the best known venues of their hometown’s legendary music scene. In September 2021 the group made history as the first mariachi band to take the stage at West Hollywood’s iconic rock club, the Whiskey A Go Go. 

The Sunset Strip venue is well known for hosting the top rock and metal acts of the last fifty years! In the 60s the club was home to the likes of The Doors and Buffalo Springfield. In the 80’s, glam metal rockers like Mötley Crüe and Ratt haunted its halls. For one night last yea, the hard rock Mecca traded in its hairspray and leather for Charros and botonadura. 

Now once again, Mariachi Quinto Sol is bringing their Latin vibes to a celebrated LA club. On July 9, 2022 they will take the stage as the first mariachi band to entertain patrons of The Mint. The West Pico Boulevard venue has played host to rock, blues and country legends since it opened in 1937. Everyone from jazz master Billy Cobham to blues queen Bonnie Raitt and Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood have graced its stage. At eighty five years-old, the historic hole in the wall is now adding mariachi to its repertoire.

It’s a big accomplishment for the band! But Mariachi Quinto Sol has made a habit of big accomplishments. They have performed all over the US and  traveled  from the most remote locations in northern Alaska to the idyllic shores of Nice on the French Riviera. The group’s fan base now circles the globe and includes thousands who likely before would never have heard of mariachi music at all, if not for the dedication and talent of Mariachi Quinto Sol.

‘Amor Toxico’ is Rael Diaz’s shot to success!

Rael Diaz, a Peruvian-American musician, just dropped his newest tune, “Amor Toxico.” The Spanish ballad is based on a true narrative that took place in the musician’s life and is a real-life event. The song’s inspiration came from a difficult breakup he experienced with his last partner in 2016.  

The song is about how the two parted ways. During the difficult time, his ex wanted to find a way to vent her anger. She then continued writing extensively and anonymously on a well-known blogging platform. She told the artist about the blog a few months after it was published. He remembers reading the blog, or the “letter,” she had written to him, and reflecting on how much of it was true for himself.

He nearly felt as though he had written the blog himself because the realisation was so profound. Because of how meaningful the experience was and how much he learned about himself, Rael has often thought back on that blog. He also made excellent observations about how his partner looked at him.  

Six years later, in 2022, Rael was mulling over ideas for a new song when the same blog came to mind. He returned and read the blog again, feeling inspired to turn that letter into a song. Since they get along well, Rael talked to her about the idea and, with her agreement, translated the blog from English to Spanish before putting it together as a song and singing it. It’s vital to notice that he didn’t alter the music in any way.

Because it was a song composed specifically for Rael, it was a particularly special tune for him. Rael Diaz has worked with producers all around the world, including those in Argentina, Germany, and Colombia, as a result of the widespread popularity of his music. Rael Diaz enjoys a large global fan base. Two TikTok and Instagram profiles he owns and manages have a combined following of 2.3 million users.

He has worked with numerous independent and signed musicians from all over the world who have released their songs as videos with Spanish lyrics. Rael Diaz hopes to overcome linguistic barriers through his music by continuing to create music that everybody can listen to and enjoy.

Tex Moonlight: Taking the Music Scene by Storm With His Distinct Sound and Incredible Propensity for Fusing Genres

To some, songs are merely beautiful pieces of art meant to be consumed and enjoyed. However, for artists like Tex Moonlight, music is much more than that. It is a way of life that gives them an excellent vehicle for expression and creativity.

Born and raised in Baltimore, the singer-songwriter’s passion for music started from an early age. Growing up, his parents always had a radio playing in the house, and he was exposed to a variety of sounds from the 60s and 70s, including Acid Rock, Motown, Country Soul, and Disco.

On top of that, the community where he lived was uniquely diverse, where the blue-collar population mixed with underground hip-hop heads and the punk-hardcore community. As a result, he has developed a sophisticated taste and deep understanding of the craft.

Because of these things, the artistic individual began exploring and enhancing his musical prowess. He touched upon the combo of roots music and modern production, creating his own fusion of Neo-Folk and futuristic postmodern Blues. This remarkable style can be likened to that of industry legend Glen Campbell combined with elements of Beck.

In addition, the talented vocalist had several gigs as the opening act for various artists and events around the New York City and Washington areas. Eventually finding courage, he decided to release his solo material and started working on his first album, Moonshot.

The debut LP is available on Spotify and features ten tracks, including “Roll You Up,” “Soft Blue Lights,” and “Heart, Bone Like China.” It was released in 2020 and produced at the Invisible Sound Studios in Baltimore by engineering guru Dave Nachodsky who previously worked with Keb Mo’ and Donna Lewis. 

Now Tex Moonlight is based in Los Angeles in pursuit of elevating his musical career even further. He has already made an impact on the local music scene due to his distinct sound that combines two seemingly contrasting genres – Americana and Electronica, which the visionary cleverly calls Americonica.

This impressive proficiency in blending different soundscapes to give birth to unique creations that captivate audiences has become the composer’s signature. As the intuitive musician proudly admitted, “Nothing turns me on quite like getting a whacked-out break-beat looped under a pedal steel.”

Aside from his one-of-a-kind style, what listeners love about Tex Moonlight is his impeccable ability for storytelling that resonates with people. Want To Destroy A Software Company’s Worth? Bring On Starboard Value

The first six months of 2022 have been brutal for stock investors. They’re suffering through a bear market after seeing the market more than double from the end of March 2020 to New Year’s Eve 2021. As a result, bottom-fishing value seekers are looking for bargains – including so-called activist hedge funds, which take big positions in target companies, then try to take them over by urging shareholders to elect new members to the board of directors.

In recent months, one of the largest activist investors – Starboard Value – has announced plans to go after no less than 15 publicly traded companies. At some of these companies, shareholders might welcome the attention. But in one group, they are shaking in their boots: software company shareholders want no part of the activist approach.

That’s because when they invest in software companies, activist hedge funds are such strikeout artists they make this year’s bear market look like a home run by comparison

Take the aforementioned Starboard, for example. In recent years, this hedge fund has seized board seats on four software companies: ComScore, Symantec, Commvault and eHealth. Average return for the four stocks? A 38% loss. Imagine how you’d feel as an ComScore shareholder since Starboard came to the rescue in July 2017: the stock is down more than 90% since then. (That’s not a typo.) 

It’s not hard to understand why. As this article points out, activist hedge funds tend to hold their shares for only about 14 months, while cutting research and development spending by more than half. Without investing in innovation, software companies get leapfrogged by the competition. Customers flee, and revenue plummets.

Creating turmoil, slashing R&D and laying off workers is especially harmful in the current climate, when unemployment is historically low and qualified workers are scarce. Software companies, which rely on top talent to produce constant innovation, can’t risk losing their best engineers and programmers – not to mention salespeople and marketers – because outsiders with no software expertise take over the company.

Indeed, this 2020 Bain Inc. study of successful software companies found that the #1 most important element that set the best software companies apart was – you guessed it – their ability to retain employees. 

Word to the wise: if you’re a software company shareholder looking for a share-price rebound, don’t trust predatory activist hedge funds to deliver results. History’s lesson is clear: they don’t know how.

Don’t Have a Mentor? Aim Higher For a Super Mentor says Eric Koester

“My first mentor strongly encouraged me to take a job that wasn’t really a fit for me, rather than continue to work on my own startup,” Eric Koester, a serial entrepreneur and professor at Georgetown University shared. “That turned out to be some of the worst advice I ever got… I was pretty much fired from that job nine months later.”

Koester’s early challenges with mentors led him to research the mentors of the world’s most successful people. He shares his findings in Super Mentors: The Ordinary Person’s Guide to Asking Extraordinary People for Help.

The book is a hands-on, practical guide for any ambitious person who is in college or graduate school, early in their career, looking to start a new business or venture, or considering a change in vocation.

“Mentors matter, perhaps more now than ever before,” Koester says. “But most of us are doing it completely backward.”

Koester details that years later, after his first negative mentor experience, he met Steve Blank, the noted entrepreneur and creator of the Lean Startup movement. Steve would become Koester’s first Super Mentor. “Steve was the other extreme for me. He was never a formal mentor per se, but what he did for me helped me start my next company, connected me to future investors, and changed my entire trajectory. And, it was because he did what Super Mentors do. He gave me an opportunity.”

Super Mentors details the surprising approach of modern mentorship built around the creation of a network of casual mentors who offer opportunities rather than advice. At the heart of this approach is the project — a tangible, finite, meaningful thing providing us a reason to engage with people.

Koester’s book is based on his popular classes at Georgetown University. “I realized that if I could help my students define a project that could attract people to them, they’d start to see an increase of surprising opportunities too.”

The results of his work are staggering. Alums of Koester’s classes who are leveraging this framework have been hired into dozens of high-profile companies, industries, and venture capital firms; and started countless businesses, leading to hundreds of TEDx talks, and much more. “I realized that no one was teaching people how to attract Super Mentors. So, I have made that my life’s work.”

Koester’s research backs up the results, finding that many of today’s most successful people built their mentors through a process he’s coined “aiming higher, asking smaller, and doing it again and again.”

“Only about a third of people even have a mentor,” Koester shared. “We get so fixated on finding a mentor, that we forget why we want one in the first place. By starting to design a project that matters to you — a nonfiction book, a podcast, an event or conference, a YouTube channel — you figure out what you want first. Then you figure out whom to attract to collaborate with on the project. For me, Steve invited me to help him design and teach a class, and that led to me being hired at Georgetown, a school I wouldn’t have even gotten into as an undergraduate.”

The book is packed with tangible and practical insights around modern mentorship, building on the four laws of mentorship: identifying the right person, right ask, right start, and right time, the PAST framework. The blending of stories, principles, research, and interactive elements make the book a great read and a guidebook all in one. 

“I can’t stress enough that it’s a huge problem that only a third of people have mentors,” Koester continued. “And it’s worse in first-generation college students and graduates, and individuals of color. This creates a disparity in opportunities. Even Sheryl Sandberg noted this in her book Lean In that women are often without mentors because other successful women have limited time and energy. What I hope is we can see mentorship not as that single person who guides us, but a network of individuals that are aligned to help us solve our problems and create opportunities.”

It’s quite a noble goal for the person whose first mentor led him down the wrong path. The book isn’t just for individuals who are starting their careers, as it offers practical advice for peer mentoring, leveraging mentorship in transitions, and even expanding a skillset. The core of the book is a message of reimagining mentors and our role as mentees in unlocking those around us to become our Super Mentors. It is filled with data and research, including insights from Koester’s coauthor Adam Saven who brings data from millions of mentoring interactions into their framework.
