The Bloom Agency CEO Silvana Massolo’s tips on how to grow businesses using Instagram hashtags

Written by Silvana Massolo, CEO at The Bloom Agency. In Partnership with New York Weekly

Everyone wants to know the secret sauce to grow their followers on Instagram. Though there are various strategies one could implement, today we are going to focus on how we may effectively use hashtags on Instagram to grow your followers and engagement (these are your likes, comments, shares, saves).

If you are a local business: Leveraging from a hashtags strategy on Instagram when you’re a local business is key to reach your ideal consumer. If you are a local restaurant – for example – you want to use local hashtags your local customers are using on Instagram. Why is this? Because general hashtags like #foodie will not help you reach them.

Let’s say you want to reach “Annie”. Annie lives in Dallas, is 35 years old and works in Downtown Dallas. She loves to discover new restaurants. She is your ideal customer. To reach Annie you need to put yourself in Annie’s shoes and reach her locally via hashtags she is either using herself or she may be using to find businesses like yours.

Here is an example: #dallasfoodie #dallasfood #dallasfoodblogger #dallassingles #dallastx #dallasfun #dallasmuseumofarts #dallasart #dallasstreetart #uptowndallas #downtowndallas. Using hashtags like #food #foodie #restaurant #newrestaurant #ilovefood #foodlover #foodporn may increase the reach of your post and potentially get some people to engage with it but it likely won’t be Annie. You may be reaching someone in Ohio or New York who is a foodie but if you’re a local business, how would that impact your success? You are looking at getting people to come to your restaurant or maybe order online next time they are hungry and don’t want to move a finger. Same approach would apply to a local sports team if they are promoting a game at home – or to a local school, bar, museum, run club, store, etc.

If you are a national brand or coach: Though local hashtags are good to reach your local customer, the reality is that what you do has no boundaries. This allows you the opportunity to use general hashtags that are tied to the topic you are advocating for. The trick is to use hashtags that are close to your niche vs. hashtags that may be too wide as these may miss the mark.

Let’s say you are a motivational speaker. However, you really focus on women who are starting their own business while also being a mom and maybe having a full-time job. Let’s call this target consumer Betty. Betty has opened her Instagram business account or maybe hasn’t yet. Maybe Betty is looking for inspiration during the 10min she has before the kids wake up or her next meeting starts.

The hashtags to reach Betty would be: #mompreneur #motivationalspeakerforwomen #bossbabe #bossbabes #womenowned #womensmallbusiness #womensmallbusinessowner #womenbusiness #latinaowned #latinaownedbusiness #womenmotivation.

Always keep your target audience in mind and put yourself in their shoes. You want to be strategic and remember that it’s not about growing but about attracting the right audience to get to know you, follow you, and engage with you.

Last but not least: Here is a hashtag tactic that works but requires some effort. Within 10-15min of your post going live on Instagram (remember to try to post every day but quality will always trump quantity) go to the search bar and type in #dallasfoodie (if you are a local restaurant) and like the posts of those who are a match for your business. I say this because sometimes people use hashtags for amplification and not to capture their target audience. Engage for about 20 minutes. Visit their profiles like a few posts (this lets them know you exist) and if possible comment (if it makes sense). Follow this strategy 3 times a day and you’ll start to see people following you. This is an organic effort that works and please whatever you do never buy followers.

Pro-Tip: There are many other tactics that could be implemented but before you do anything, take the time to define your ideal customer. Name them and go after them. This will give you clear direction. Furthermore, develop your social media strategy. Be honest with yourself and answer this question: What do I want to achieve here? Once you have the answer to that, ask yourself why that’s important (your “why”), and proceed to develop a social media strategy that will help achieve your goal (or goals).

Not sure where to start? Set up a complimentary discovery call with us. Together we will shine some light on your social media efforts and agree on next steps. These steps may be tricks you may want to start testing right away or potentially a partnership where The Bloom Agency may help you with your monthly social media needs while you focus on running your business.

RecruiterCentral Owner, Luke Doubler, Shares His Outlook on the Q3-Q4 Hiring and Business Landscape

Luke Doubler, owner of RecruiterCentral, a Minneapolis-based, rapidly growing search firm specializing in delivering top talent for all positions, especially science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) related roles, shared his opinion on what Q3 and Q4 of 2022 are shaping up to look like — with the overarching tone of change.

Up to Today

Luke commented that companies have had difficulty finding and retaining key technical talent even before the pandemic. As a result, engineers, scientists, nurses and many other roles with a technical component have all been in very high demand. He said that even though the overall unemployment rate remains around 3.8%, the unemployment rates for roles with a significant STEM component are still at zero or negative.

He shared that part of the remaining problem is that “we’re seeing a flat to negative growth in qualified STEM or skilled labor professionals entering the workforce versus those who are leaving. Adding to this problem, all the forecasts around college enrollment and those about to enter the workforce predict that this problem will be persistent for the foreseeable future.”

Q3-Q4 Outlook

Doubler said he had noticed some changes since inflation began rising in October of 2021. While “things are fairly back to normal with the unemployment rate at 3.6%, we are still a little bit behind on total employment, which is down 1.6 million from the pre-pandemic levels of February 2020.” And he went on to say, “despite this, there are still more job openings than people to fill them, especially for skilled labor and corporate roles with a significant STEM component.

Over the last few months, Luke has observed employers and hiring managers reconsider job openings that haven’t been filled for months, “especially bigger companies, they are second-guessing their need for roles.” He added, “we’re seeing a lot of companies right size, meaning that they’re looking at what they need and what it takes to get things done. We also see lots of layoffs happening across the industry, not massive layoffs, but onesie twosies, type layoffs in middle and upper management.”

Additionally, “there’s a lot more scrutiny when hires are being made, employers are being more careful about their cash investments when it comes to talent.” So, the team at RecruiterCentral is seeing the job market shift away from the candidates’ favored market to an employer favored market.

His outlook is that this trend away from hiring and trimming the proverbial fat will continue on its upward trajectory as long as the looming recession remains on the horizon. He commented that “inflation, the petroleum shortage, and supply chain issues are causing employers to listen intently to what the future of the economy looks like before taking on employment risk.”

How Hiring Managers Can Navigate the Changing Times

With the continued shortage of qualified candidates and reduced ability to attract them with incentives, hiring managers should be asking themselves, “Would you like to work for you? What is your employment story? What are employees saying about your employment culture? Hiring managers need to think about and articulate the long-term value proposition that the company can offer. Then find candidates that share similar visions and career aspirations.”

Through their observations, Luke and his team see difficulty ahead. They are hopeful that a recession does not transpire but have watched Fortune 50 to 500 companies anticipate one over the coming recent months. “Maybe fuel prices will come down, and the supply chain issues will be fixed, but it’s sound thinking for hiring managers and candidates to prepare for the worst. The companies that have fared the best with hiring and retention during covid and the past couple of years have been the companies that have been listening closest to the candidate market, been nimble and adaptable, and made subtle or even large adjustments on their onsite work requirements, various other benefits, and long term career incentives.”

About RecruiterCentral

Luke Doubler founded RecruiterCentral in 2017. Since its inception, Luke and his team have been matching candidates with difficult-to-fill jobs in STEM and upper management. The company works closely with hiring managers and helps train them to find the best talent on their own. If you are a qualified STEM candidate seeking employment or a hiring manager with a tough-to-fill position, contact Luke and his team at RecruiterCentral, they have the skills and knowledge to help.

Ways To Get Healthy Today That Catalina Levitt, One Of The World’s Leading Nutritionists, Recommends

These days, with so many conflicting opinions out there, it can be difficult to know what to eat for optimal health. When setting new health habits, it’s natural to want to do everything “right.” Kale over spinach? Almond milk over oat? Eating three meals but nothing after 8:00pm? Exhausting, right? Catalina Levitt, one of several leading nutritionists providing in-home “Zoom” based nutrition consultations, agrees.

The truth is, while food and nutrition can be nuanced and different things can absolutely work for different people, what you choose to eat should not be dictated by a set of rules. The which-vegetable-is-better debate aside, here are several things Catalina Levitt agrees on, based on her research and applying the principles to win several gold medals in body building competitions.

Everything around your plate matters

Nutrition is the most obvious place to begin when setting healthier habits, but it’s not a magic pill. Stress and sleep (or lack thereof) are two critical, yet often overlooked, pieces of your optimal health algorithm.

You’ll make progress with implementing better food habits, but ultimately your success will be stunted if you don’t also work to reduce your stress and ensure you get adequate sleep each night. How much sleep do you need?

Experiment with the ideal number of hours that help you wake up feeling your best, and aim for that.

One meal isn’t a deal-breaker

No one meal will make or break your health goals. Of course, you’ll see the most success when healthy habits are sustained over longer periods of time, but you don’t have to start over just because you were in a pinch, and had to grab fast food for lunch.

Make the best choice you can — think salad instead of fries, and swap out the soda for water — and get back on track with your goals for your next meal.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint

Success, no matter how you quantify it, is never linear. Building healthy habits takes time and setbacks are to be expected.

You may experience a lot of success early on with health and lifestyle changes and suddenly hit a plateau or struggle to keep up with multiple habits at one time. Either way, it’s important to remember this is normal, and revising or shifting a goal is okay, if it helps you make it part of your daily routine.

Duran Sherzoy: From Dental Practice to QR-Code Inspired Apparel

Entrepreneurship is an ever-evolving journey, which is evident in the stories of entrepreneurs like Duran Sherzoy, who has entered many ventures and shown there is never only one true path to success.

Duran Sherzoy, the son of Roshana Sherzoy, DDS, is a business mogul in the making. He entered the same industry as his mother, who owns one of the most successful dental practices in New Jersey. Today, Duran is starting his own business, MrGoodLiffee Marketing, an e-commerce company selling merchandise with strategic QR codes. While unheard of, the idea has been catching up as Sherzoy’s business takes more extraordinary leaps and bounds into the future of business.

Sherzoy attended Bergen Tech in Paramus, New Jersey, where he studied General Contracting. In 2013, he entered Lincoln Tech to study Automotive Technology. After picking up his dental radiology license in 2015, Duran started working with his mom at her practice, Englewood Dentistry.

Growing up, Duran Sherzoy drew inspiration from his relationship with his mother, Roshana, who runs Englewood Dentistry at 334 Grand Avenue, Englewood, New Jersey. “She taught me all that I know and much more,” explains Duran. “That is how I am able to manage this company with integrity.” Back in 2014, Sherzoy started working with his mother at the practice on a full-time basis. In the early days, he did not understand much about dentistry. He had little background in dentistry practice management, or business administration. But Duran picked up rather quickly, showing that he had the same knack for entrepreneurship and management as his mother.

Five years after serving the community through Englewood Dentistry, Duran Sherzoy had become a master at all aspects of the clinic’s operations. “I learned employee care, customer care, inventory storage, scheduling, dental assisting, dental radiology, marketing, and more,” Sherzoy shares. But what stuck with Duran was the dedication to community service, as he saw business not only as a way to grow personal agendas and help those around him. “We do know how to help people because we understand people from many points of view,” he adds.

When coming up with a strategy to gather more Google reviews for the practice, Duran Sherzoy started tinkering around with QR codes. He learned how to design and program them to do various web-based and physical-based tasks, using them to the practice’s advantage. This led him to the idea that started MrGoodLiffee Marketing. The apparel business uses strategic QR codes on merchandise to lead people to a business page or Instagram account. The idea has stuck quite quickly as people have started engaging in this approach to promote brands.

Today, Duran puts most of his efforts into growing MrGoodLiffee Marketing. Besides these two commitments, Sherzoy is also a real estate agent who picked up his New Jersey Real Estate license in 2014. With all the experiences he has accumulated in both industries, Sherzoy is more equipped with ideas and lessons that he is now applying in his current ventures.

Duran hopes to grow MrGoodLiffee Marketing into a massive brand that will help thousands more businesses in the country.

Five Common Mistake to Avoid for Hyper-Growth Startups

Scaling at hyper-growth is always a challenge.  For those not familiar with the term “hyper-growth,” it refers to organizations that plan to at least double in size over a 12 month period.  In my experience scaling these types of companies (currently on my 4th), there are a few commonalities that most organizations face during high levels of expansion.  The key is identifying and mitigating these inhibiting factors as quickly as possible.  Failing to do so can hold disastrous results not only for talent acquisition, but for company goals as well.   Growth is inextricably linked to company initiatives, so it is imperative to identify these potential challenges as quickly as possible.

Below are the five most common challenges that high growth startups encounter when they scale.  It’s important to note that not every company will face all of these issues, nor will they hold the same degree of difficulty in attracting talent.  Notwithstanding, these remain the most commonly observed obstacles to overcome when achieving rapid growth.

Establishing a Recruiting Ecosystem

The recruiting ecosystem is a vital component of all successful hyper-growth startup companies.  Organizations must invest the appropriate amount of time and resources into scaling.  Spend too much and you risk relegating recruiting to nothing more than a cost center.  Spend too little and you see few results or over-work your team.  It is important to strike a balance between investing in talent acquisition and spending money for the sake of throwing dollars at a problem.

The first step is to create a talent acquisition plan.  This plan should be inclusive of a sourcing strategy, internal tools like an applicant tracking system, candidate sourcing and engagement tools, and new employee onboarding processes. It is incumbent upon talent acquisition leaders to provide executives with a detailed proposal to fulfill all of these areas, at a minimum.  In the same manner, executives at hyper-growth startups should work hand-in-hand with their leaders in talent acquisition to ensure they understand the strategy and fund all of the necessary components.  Far too often talent acquisition professionals observe the extremes; simply purchasing a singular recruiting tool and applicant tracking system or acquiring every product they are pitched by external Account Executives.  Business leaders should trust their talent leaders to develop a strategy to support the needs of the business and fund the necessary tools to accomplish their tasks.

Defining Efficient Interview Processes

Aside from the recruiting ecosystem, interview processes are arguably the most critical component to scaling an organization.  No matter how many candidates are introduced into the process, an organization will not thrive (or scale) if they cannot articulate the value proposition to the candidate, keep the candidate engaged in the process, and move expeditiously from application to decision.  There’s a saying in sales that, “time kills all deals.”  This is also true of the interview process within an organization.  Far too often organizations subject candidates to multi-step processes that drag out over several weeks or months. This simply will not work in the current environment.  Candidates have far too many options to remain in interview processes that include 4+ steps over the course of 30 days or more.  Organizations also should not expect candidates to complete lengthy assessments that are more than two hours.  It’s fairly easy to identify if these are bottlenecks in your organization because large groups of candidates will either self-select out or accept offers while still in process.  Some common objections to this notion are, “We’ve always done it this way,” or “this is how Amazon hires,” or “we need this process to know we are making the right hire.”  All of these, of course, are smokescreens to the real concern which is decision paralysis.  The current processes may have worked as a small company when the organization was hiring a dozen or less employees but they often do not scale.  More likely than not, your organization does not have a trillion dollar market cap with an endless supply of talent and thus is not Amazon.  And of course, no amount of steps will eliminate all candidates who do not fit.  Managers can hardly evaluate someone better in 10 hours than they can in 5 hours.

Employer Branding

According to a recent LinkedIn survey, 75% of candidates will consider a prospective employer’s web presence and branding before making a decision.  Additionally, Nielsen observes that 92% of candidates check peer-reviewed websites such as Glassdoor before making the decision to change jobs.  This study is consistent with other surveys conducted by Glassdoor, which state that 86% of jobseekers review company ratings before interviews.  The bottom line?  If your company has poor Glassdoor ratings, or worse, no ratings at all, it will hinder growth efforts.

Improving employer branding is one of the areas employers can immediately change and with minimal cost or effort to establish a baseline media presence.  Start simple by asking all candidates, regardless of whether or not they are hired, to complete a candidate survey.  Ask them to review you on Glassdoor.  Encourage your employees to leave honest, anonymous reviews.  Do not attempt to address these reviews, positive or negative, within your organization.  Instead, use it as feedback to improve your processes and listen to internal and external stakeholders.

Work Environment

Much like peer reviews, prospective employees care deeply about the work environment.  This not only references the dynamics at play, such as corporate values and interactions, but where people work. Is your company allowing people to work fully remote or are employees expected to go to an office?  It’s clear that virtually all employees, upwards of 96%, prefer to work remotely, but what might not be understood is some people refuse to go back to an office.  If you are mandating that employees report to an office, you are automatically cutting your potential candidate pool in half.  A recent study from SHRM suggests that 48% of employees plan to look for remote roles once they are forced to return to the office.  This is hardly the only study to suggest this trend, though it is one of the most recent.  There are other benefits to allowing remote work as well. There is extensive research to suggest remote employees are more productive, have better work/life balance, and have a lower attrition rate.  Additionally, remote work limits exposure to viruses such as influenza and COVID.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation is not the most important aspect of a career move, but it is an important aspect of a career move.  It’s exceedingly rare for candidates to change positions when they do not observe an increase in base compensation, bonuses (which most companies provide), and comprehensive benefits.  There are certain benefits like unlimited PTO, paid Medical/Dental/Vision for employees, 401K with match, Parental Leave, Short-term & Long-term Disability, and Education benefits which typically move the needle.  Of course, not every employer offers all of these benefits, however it is important to remain as competitive as possible.

It’s important to remember that all of these challenges (and more) are extremely common in high-growth environments.  Companies experiencing an uptick in hiring must necessarily review many standard practices and processes such as the ones listed above.  It is important to understand that, much like the size of the employee base, other aspects of the business will need to expand as well.  Typically this means increasing benefits, conducting internal and external market analysis of compensation, adding new tools for branding, or in some cases like Talent Acquisition, adding new departments.  All of these items are part and parcel with growth.  It’s not easy, but with the right approach and willingness to change, the experience can be extremely successful and rewarding.

iHeart Radio’s “The Journey Told Show” Reveals Devin J. Ricks Is A Master Of Emotional Intelligence!

“Be the best version of you that you can be.” -The Journey Told Show

Film Director Devin J. Ricks dishes on creativity and flow in the entertainment business. There’s no secret that Covid-19 has been a journey/struggle for us all. The Film Director tells us that working in the industry during these times has had its rewards & challenges, but nonetheless, made sure he enjoyed his experiences.

Ricks tells us things took a shift & had to step away from being behind the scenes, and make cameo appearances on different film sets to stay motivated! Being a Baltimore native, Devin had the pleasure to work with HBO on their new mini series, “We Own This City” (around 1:20).

When asked about his favorite project since he’s been a filmmaker, he held his 2nd movie “Beautiful Mistake” in high regard. Although that movie came out almost a decade ago, he says that chapter was where he learned about himself as a director. Host Shawn Zanotti reiterates the word “special” to the film director as he recalls that chapter in his life (@ 2:15).

The show had great depths in conversation about spirituality. Zanotti wanted to tap into Ricks’ routine & how he stays spiritually grounded. He says he’s in two relationships (the spirit & the human side of life) and has to make sure it’s being held simultaneously to stay centered in life. “When my spirit knocks I better listen & it’s mine to have. So I have to abide by it & I want my spirit to work with me & for me.” Devin tells us.

3 Tips He Shared:

Trust Yourself.

Listen To Yourself.

Be Patient With Yourself.

Devin also shared his two-cents on “keeping your circle small” & says it’s better that way in the long run. I’m sure we all can agree to that testament at some point in our lives.

Mid-way, Dev TV! came up in the conversation. The host wanted to know more about the media platform & its future goals. The multi-talented director went into the media realm yet kept the mentality of a director close by. Maneuvering in that space, it’s important to have a good head on your shoulders & great direction. YouTube, in its early days, was what Ricks said birth the idea of Dev TV! I’d have to say, the millennial era is fortunate to experience such great shifts/changes within technology (inventions) and how we communicate (social media). Being one of the first people at his school to use YouTube in 2006, Devin says it was genius for him to do it when he was a teenager. The media platform became a sensation & still is to this day (@11:00).

As the show began to wrap (@17:05), host Shawn Zonatti asked Devin to finish several sentences. They ended in these 3 structures: “I am a: GREAT HUMAN BEING.” “And a master of: EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE.” “Who can control my own: BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.” Emotional intelligence being defined as: the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate efficiently, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict; is such a profound skill to have. Any takers for this task?

The show was very insightful and ended with the segment “Tell & Tell” where Ricks had to reveal something about himself that a lot of people aren’t aware of. What he told us, was sure something worth knowing more about! To know what that hidden talent is, be sure to check out the full interview on iHeart Radio’s platform: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-the-journey-told-81020155/episode/devin-j-ricks-dishes-on-creativity-96817286/

The Turning Mechanical Tool Torque Wrench

Introduction:

Frequently found in toolkits is a torque wrench. There are times when a high-quality, calibrated torque wrench is seen to be the optimum instrument for the task, notably when fixing machinery or cars. If you’ve never done a particular type of DIY project, you might need to learn how torque wrenches work or which one is appropriate for the job first. This manual includes instructions on how to operate a torque wrench and will explain which wrench is best for your needs. Torque wrench is a tool that is only used to adjust nuts and bolts. Experts in manufacturing, electronics, and automotive maintenance favor it because it gives them greater leverage for tightening tricky and hard-to-reach parts.
