Zoilita’s story is one of remarkable endurance and transformation. In 2000, she experienced the unimaginable—the sudden passing of her husband, Nicholas J. Lester, after 20 years of marriage. She was left to raise their three sons, then aged 12, 15, and 17, while navigating the aftermath of profound grief. Though she had always nurtured a love for singing, acting, and writing, her creative pursuits had long been placed on hold. Growing up in a large family of 11 children in Peru, there simply hadn’t been room for personal dreams. Necessity took precedence over self-expression.

It wasn’t until 2016 that Zoilita found her way back to music. That year, in the depths of what she describes as a period of depression, something shifted. She began channeling her emotions into creative work—writing songs as a form of therapy, a way to cope, and eventually, a way to heal. Since then, she has poured herself into her artistry, embracing her identity not just as a performer, but as a vessel for stories of spiritual reflection and emotional truth.

Bilingual in English and Spanish, Zoilita’s songwriting is intimate, melodic, and deeply heartfelt. Her lyrics often reflect themes of faith, memory, and transformation, with many songs offering meditations on her relationship with God and her own emotional landscape. She writes about joy and sorrow, hope and uncertainty—threads of a life lived with raw openness. Some of her most recognized titles include “I Am Happy Today,” “Days of My Life,” “Madre Divina,” and “Recordando Tu Bella Sonrisa,” the latter a tribute to loved ones lost.

Her creative process is deeply intuitive. Zoilita describes her songs not as something she consciously constructs, but as something that flows through her—something guided by a force beyond her own mind. She believes this flow is led by her late husband, who remains her spiritual companion and artistic muse. In her words, the melodies and lyrics come from her “angel from heaven,” not from her, but through her.

This sense of divine connection is especially evident in “My Friend Jesus,” the track that earned her recognition at the Charleston competition. The song blends her signature emotional tone with a message of devotion and trust, exploring her relationship with Christ not as a distant figure, but as a present and loving friend. It’s a song that resonates with listeners who seek both comfort and clarity in their faith—and its impact is what helped it stand out among a competitive field of entries.

But awards are not Zoilita’s motivation. For her, music is an act of joy, healing, and gratitude. It keeps her connected to her purpose and to the people she loves. Every lyric she pens is rooted in lived experience and channeled emotion. Other original songs like “Hoy Estoy Feliz,” “I Believe in Myself,” “One More Year,” and “Born Again” reflect the same spirit—testimonies not just of belief, but of endurance, personal growth, and a refusal to give up on creativity, no matter how long it took to bloom.

Zoilita’s story is not just about music—it’s about rediscovery. It’s about a woman who turned pain into art, and who continues to write, sing, and share in the face of all odds. With her Charleston achievement, her voice is beginning to reach wider audiences—but the heart behind her songs remains the same: honest, personal, and quietly powerful.
