Justin Karp: A Journey Through Music and Medicine

Justin Karp is a musician and medical professional who actively engages in both fields. With a strong inclination toward pop punk, pop rock, and alternative rock, his music draws inspiration from well-known bands such as Simple Plan, Story of the Year, Midtown, Nine Days, the Goo Goo Dolls, Hoobastank, and Blink 182. Alongside his medical career, Karp continues to develop his artistry, crafting and recording new songs while refining his creative approach.

Early Exposure to Music

Raised in Plainview, New York, Karp was introduced to music at an early age. His mother and grandmother, both piano teachers, nurtured his interest, while his stepfather, a lawyer with a passion for blues guitar, further expanded his appreciation for different musical styles. Hearing the distinct rock sounds of Green Day heightened his fascination with guitar music, and at thirteen, he received his first guitar. From that point on, he practiced regularly and experimented with different styles, shaping his musical identity.

During his teenage years, Karp formed a band called 1st Runner Up, playing at local venues with the support of his family. One of his memorable experiences during this time was attending a concert by Midtown, a band that had a significant influence on his musical journey. After the show, he had the opportunity to meet the members briefly, a moment that left a lasting impression.

Years later, Karp recorded a cover of Midtown’s song “Perfect” and shared it online. He later discovered that the band had noticed his version and shared it, marking a significant step in his creative evolution.

Pursuing a Career in Medicine

While music played a significant role in Karp’s life, his professional path led him to a different industry. Initially working as an accountant, he later transitioned to the medical field, becoming a podiatric surgeon. Despite the rigorous demands of his profession, music remained an integral part of his routine.

During his medical board exam preparations, Karp continued writing and recording music. During this period, he released his first track, “Last Chance,” a song that reflects personal experiences and explores emotional themes. Songwriting served as an avenue for him to process emotions and create lyrics that others could relate to, strengthening his connection with listeners.

Balancing Creativity and Fitness

Beyond music and medicine, Karp is passionate about fitness and physical challenges. He has participated in several Spartan races, an endurance-based obstacle course event requiring both mental and physical resilience. Additionally, he enjoys traveling and following sports, making time for his various interests despite his packed schedule.

Looking Ahead: New Music and Projects

Karp remains deeply engaged in his music, regularly devoting time to writing and recording new material. He has been working on a variety of projects, including a single titled Living Out of Spite, which he has discussed as part of his plans for 2025. Passionate about his craft, he continues to explore new ideas and refine his sound. He actively shares insights into his creative process, studio sessions, and musical journey through social media and his official website, offering glimpses into the evolution of his work.
