Sophie Milliken’s career is a testament to the power of adaptability and a clear sense of purpose. From her early days at John Lewis to founding her own businesses, Sophie has consistently demonstrated a strong ability to lead, innovate, and make a meaningful impact in her field. Her journey from a corporate environment to becoming a prominent figure in the public relations industry is marked by a focus on aligning her professional endeavors with her personal values, ultimately leading her to create Moja Group—a modern PR agency that stands out for its commitment to building personal brands for entrepreneurs and senior executives.
After completing her education, Sophie embarked on a career at John Lewis, joining their graduate scheme. Her time at John Lewis was spent in various management roles, which allowed her to gain a deep understanding of the retail industry and develop her leadership skills. Her final role at the company was as the head of graduate recruitment, a position she found particularly rewarding. This role gave Sophie insight into the importance of talent acquisition and development, laying the groundwork for her future ventures.
In 2013, Sophie decided to leave John Lewis and take a bold step into entrepreneurship. She founded her first business, a graduate recruitment and employability consultancy. The company specialized in designing assessment processes and materials for employers while also working closely with universities to prepare students for the rigors of job selection processes. Sophie’s approach was innovative; she organized large-scale mock assessment centers in football stadiums, helping over 30,000 students enhance their employability. This initiative not only addressed a critical need in the job market but also positioned Sophie as a leader in the recruitment field.
However, as successful as her first business was, Sophie realized that it was time to move on when she felt her values no longer aligned with those of her co-directors. In 2019, she sold the business, staying on during the earn-out period. Despite the potential for further financial gain, Sophie chose to prioritize her principles over profit, deciding to exit the company when the alignment of values could not be sustained.
In January 2022, Sophie launched Moja Group, a PR agency that reflects her commitment to values-driven work. Moja Group is not just another PR firm; it focuses on building personal brands for entrepreneurs and senior executives, ensuring that their public image is a true reflection of their achievements and aspirations. Sophie’s approach to PR is comprehensive and strategic, encompassing everything from securing awards and podcast appearances to facilitating book publications and speaking engagements. The goal is clear: when someone Googles a Moja Group client, the results should be a testament to the work Sophie and her team have done.
Moja Group’s work goes beyond traditional PR tactics. Sophie understands that in today’s digital age, a strong personal brand is essential for business leaders who want to stand out in their industry. By elevating her clients’ profiles, Moja Group helps them attract more significant opportunities and grow their businesses. This focus on tangible results and client success is what sets Moja Group apart in the competitive PR landscape.
Sophie’s leadership at Moja Group is informed by her extensive experience in recruitment and her deep understanding of what it takes to build a successful career. She knows that a personal brand is not just about visibility but about being recognized for the right reasons. Through Moja Group, she provides her clients with the tools and platforms they need to share their stories, showcase their expertise, and connect with their target audience in a meaningful way.
In addition to running Moja Group, Sophie is also a dedicated volunteer, currently serving as the Chair of Smart Works Newcastle. This charity provides interview clothing and coaching to women across the northeast of England, helping them secure employment and regain their confidence. Sophie’s role in this organization reflects her ongoing commitment to empowering others, particularly women, in their professional lives.
Sophie’s contributions to business and education have not gone unnoticed. In 2023, she was awarded an MBE on King Charles’ first honors list for her services to business and to education. This recognition is a significant milestone in her career, symbolizing the impact she has made through her work.
Looking ahead, Sophie continues to focus on growing Moja Group and helping her clients achieve their goals. She recently launched Moja Group’s publishing division, a move that allows her to further support her clients in getting their ideas from concept to publication. Her third book, “From Unknown to Unforgettable,” is a reflection of her expertise in personal branding and her commitment to helping others succeed.
Sophie Milliken’s journey from corporate success to entrepreneurial leadership is a story of dedication, innovation, and a strong sense of purpose. Through Moja Group, she continues to redefine what it means to build a personal brand, helping entrepreneurs and senior executives stand out in an increasingly crowded marketplace. Her work is not just about PR; it’s about empowering individuals to reach their full potential and make a lasting impact in their industries.
