We are fortunate to have invited Shuyi Liu for an exclusive interview. Today, we will step into the world of Shuyi Liu, delving into how she transforms her concern for society and human well-being into innovative designs that change the world.

Reporter: I heard that you’ve been fascinated by human behavior and social interactions from a young age. How did this curiosity influence your decision to choose service experience design as your career path?

Shuyi Liu:That’s true. Ever since my childhood, I’ve been deeply fascinated by human behavior and social interaction. This innate curiosity didn’t just shape my academic pursuits in sociology, anthropology, and psychology; it fundamentally carved my professional path in service experience design. I’ve always believed that understanding the intricate tapestry of human emotions and social dynamics is key to creating services that genuinely resonate with people.

Let me share with you one of my most impactful projects, which exemplify how listening to and understanding diverse human situations fuels my design inspirations. One of my project close to my heart involved working with an African-American neighborhood. Our mission was to help the elder community members share their memories and knowledge of the neighborhood, passing it on to younger generations. We developed a walking tour app that guided visitors through historic sites, buildings, and murals, thereby stimulating local tourism.

This project was not just about preserving culture; it was about breathing life into it. By listening to the stories and experiences of the community, I was able to design an app that not only celebrated their heritage but also served as a bridge between generations. It’s projects like these that underline my commitment to using design as a tool for social change and community empowerment.

In essence, my journey in service experience design is a testament to the power of empathy and innovation. It’s about understanding people’s needs, desires, and the challenges they face, and then translating that understanding into tangible solutions that enhance lives. It’s this blend of deep empathy, rigorous design methodology, and a commitment to social betterment that defines my work.

Reporter: You collaborated with colleagues on the design of AirSphere and Stardust Weaver. Could you share the inspiration behind these two projects and the key considerations during the design process?

Shuyi Liu:Collaborating with my outstanding colleague on the AirSphere and Stardust Weaver projects was a journey that not only tapped into our shared design expertise but also reflected our deep empathy for societal challenges.

The genesis of both AirSphere and Stardust Weaver stemmed from our mutual understanding of and empathy for the struggles faced by different groups in society. For AirSphere, the inspiration came from observing the emotional toll of fast-paced urban lifestyles. We wanted to create a tool that could offer relief and teach essential self-care practices. The design process involved meticulous consideration of how to make learning relaxation and breathing techniques engaging and effective through gameplay. We opted for a design that was light and soothing, ensuring that the game experience was not just enjoyable but also therapeutic.

In contrast, Stardust Weaver was inspired by the profound grief experienced by pet owners upon the loss of their animal companions. We aimed to provide a scientific yet compassionate approach to journaling, helping individuals navigate their grief. The design incorporated bright colors and pet illustrations to create a comforting and engaging interface. Key considerations included how to effectively communicate journaling techniques and create a space that felt both personal and supportive.

My expertise in empathetic design played a crucial role in both projects. I led our teams with a focus on leveraging each member’s strengths and navigating through challenges with effective problem-solving strategies. Balancing these projects with my primary professional responsibilities required meticulous time management, ensuring each project received the dedication it deserved. The impact of these projects was significant. We were honored with four international design awards, a testament to our innovative approach and the projects’ relevance. The exposure and engagement we gained on Behance were phenomenal, contributing greatly to the design community. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect was the positive feedback from users during prototype testing, confirming that our designs had a tangible and beneficial impact on their emotional well-being.

In conclusion, the inspiration and meticulous design considerations for AirSphere and Stardust Weaver were intertwined with my professional skills and personal values. These projects showcase the power of design in addressing complex emotional needs and enhancing the human experience.

Reporter: When you collaborated on the design of AirSphere and Stardust Weaver, how did you integrate your expertise and ideas into these projects and make a positive impact?

Shuyi Liu:Working on the AirSphere and Stardust Weaver projects was an incredibly enriching experience that allowed me to integrate my empathy for diverse social groups and my design expertise to create impactful solutions.

Both projects were born out of our shared empathy as designers for the challenges faced by different people in society. AirSphere is an emotion transformative board game tailored for individuals in fast-paced urban environments who are prone to emotional challenges. Its design, light and relaxing, seamlessly facilitates learning and practicing breathing and relaxation techniques through interactive group gameplay. We recognized emotional well-being as a critical issue in modern life, both from data and perception. On the other hand, Stardust Weaver focuses on providing a scientific journaling methodology for pet owners who have lost their companions. The design, stable yet brightly colored, incorporates pet illustrations as a medium of communication, guiding users through journaling to address grief.

My role in these projects was multifaceted. I leveraged my leadership skills in team collaboration, guiding our collective efforts towards a unified vision while ensuring each member’s strengths were optimally utilized. When challenges arose, my problem-solving ability came to the forefront, enabling us to navigate obstacles effectively. Balancing these passion projects with my regular duties was a lesson in time and energy management, ensuring each endeavor received the attention it deserved. My design philosophy, centered around empathy and functionality, was integral in shaping the user experience and the overall aesthetic of both games.

The positive impacts of these projects have been profound. We were honored to receive four international design awards, which not only recognized our creative efforts but also amplified the projects’ reach. When featured on Behance, the exposure and engagement we received were overwhelming, contributing significant original inspiration to the design community. Perhaps most gratifying was the feedback during prototype testing, where users expressed how these games genuinely aided their emotional well-being.

In conclusion, the journey of designing AirSphere and Stardust Weaver was a harmonious blend of my professional skills, personal passion, and the shared goal of positively impacting society.

These projects exemplify how design can transcend aesthetics to become a tool for emotional healing and community support.
