On Monday, September 18th, the Third Annual Sustainable Goals Banquet, “Healthier People, Healthier Planet,” took place during the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Hosted by Fashion 4 Development (F4D) in partnership with the Human Kind Institute, this prestigious event recognized individuals who have made significant contributions to healthcare and community service. Among the distinguished honorees was Dr. Ramon Tallaj, Founder and Chairman of SOMOS Community Care. Dr. Tallaj’s unwavering dedication to healthcare and his remarkable efforts during the pandemic earned him the Public Health and Community Service Human Kind Award.
The Importance of SOMOS Community Care
SOMOS Community Care, a non-profit, physician-led network of nearly 3,000 healthcare providers, plays a pivotal role in serving over 1 million Medicaid beneficiaries in New York City. Founded in 2015 by Dr. Ramon Tallaj, SOMOS stands as the largest and only physician-led performance provider system participating in the New York State Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment Program (DSRIP). What sets SOMOS apart is its commitment to culturally competent care, ensuring that vulnerable populations, including Latino, Asian, African American, and immigrant communities across the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens, receive the healthcare they need.
The Human Kind Award and Dr. Ramon Tallaj’s Impact
At the Sustainable Goals Banquet, Dr. Ramon Tallaj was recognized for his extraordinary contributions to healthcare and community service. Amid the pandemic’s challenges, Dr. Tallaj mobilized a network of 2,600 doctors across New York City to administer over two million vaccines to underserved communities. This feat was not only a testament to his leadership but also a lifeline for communities facing disparities in healthcare access.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Tallaj emphasized the critical need to address the social determinants of health. He urged society to advocate for access to quality healthcare, nutritious food, safe environments, and educational opportunities for all. He underscored the importance of combating childhood obesity and promoting the overall health of future generations in New York and around the world.
“This award serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing the social determinants of health and advocating for access to quality healthcare, nutritious food, safe environments, and educational opportunities for all. Together, let us work towards creating communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and lead healthy, fulfilling lives,” said Dr. Tallaj, echoing the commitment of SOMOS Community Care to these ideals.
