Mastering Fabric Selection: A Guide for Your Next Project

Key Takeaways

  • Understand the different types of fabrics and their unique properties.
  • Learn how to choose the suitable fabric for various projects.
  • Explore tips for working with varying types of fabric.
  • Access two valuable resources for in-depth fabric knowledge.

Introduction to Fabric Selection

Choosing the suitable fabric for your project can significantly influence the outcome, whether sewing a dress, making curtains, or creating upholstery. With so many options available, it’s essential to understand the characteristics of various fabrics and how they can impact your project. When exploring luxury fabric selections online, you will find multiple options that cater to diverse needs, making your fabric choice both crucial and exciting. From texture to durability, the fabric you choose can elevate your project to professional standards or fall short. Therefore, a well-informed decision can make a world of difference. Different fabrics offer unique features, and understanding these nuances will give you the knowledge to make the right choice for your specific requirements.

Understanding Fabric Types

Fabrics can be broadly categorized into natural and synthetic ones. Natural fabrics include cotton, linen, wool, and silk, each with unique benefits and drawbacks. For instance, cotton is breathable and versatile, making it perfect for everyday wear, while linen is known for its durability and coolness.

Cotton

Cotton is an organic material that is very breathable and comfortable to wear. It’s excellent for summer garments and day-to-day wear. Its softness against the skin is unparalleled and easy to maintain with straightforward washing instructions. However, it wrinkles easily, making it only ideal for formal attire if blended with other fibers. Various cotton types, such as Egyptian and Pima cotton, also allow diverse textural choices.

Silk

Silk is another natural fiber, prized for its luxurious feel and sheen. It’s perfect for formal wear and special occasions, adding an element of sophistication and elegance. However, it’s delicate and often requires hand washing or dry cleaning, which can be a drawback. Silk’s natural temperature-regulating properties make it comfortable to wear in warm and cool climates.

Wool

Wool is warm and durable, making it suitable for winter clothing and outerwear. Its innate ability to draw moisture away from the body aids in maintaining a dry and comfortable feeling. However, it can be itchy against the skin if not processed correctly, although modern treatments have reduced this issue significantly. Wool’s variety, from merino to cashmere, offers softness and warmth.

Pros and Cons of Natural vs. Synthetic Fabrics

Synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon, and acrylic offer different advantages. Polyester is rugged and wrinkle-resistant, while nylon is famous for its durability and flexibility. However, synthetics might not be as breathable as natural fabrics. Finding the balance between natural and synthetic fabrics can be crucial for the project’s success.

Polyester

Polyester is commonly utilized because of its strength and ability to resist wrinkles. It’s less breathable than natural fabrics but often blends with other fibers to improve comfort. Polyester is also easier to care for and maintains its shape well, making it a popular choice for everyday wear and home décor items. Technological advances have led to polyester fabrics that are nearly as soft and breathable as their natural counterparts.

Nylon

Nylon is firm and elastic, making it an excellent choice for activewear and outerwear. It provides good resistance to wear and tear but can be less comfortable for long-term wear than natural fibers. Nylon’s ability to repel water makes it suitable for outdoor use, though it may trap heat more than breathable fabrics like cotton and linen.

Acrylic

Acrylic is often used as a wool substitute because of its warmth and affordability. However, it doesn’t have the same moisture-wicking properties as wool and can feel less breathable. Acrylic is highly durable and resistant to damage from sunlight, making it a good choice for outdoor fabrics and items like sweaters and blankets. Its versatility and lower cost make it accessible for various projects.

Choosing the Right Fabric for Apparel

Fabric choice is critical when making clothes. For instance, choosing a lightweight natural fabric like silk or cotton for summer wear can keep you comfortable. On the other hand, using heavier, synthetic options such as polyester blends can add volume and structure to winter garments.

Summer Apparel

For summer clothing, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are excellent choices. They permit the flow of air, maintaining your coolness. Lightweight silk can also be suitable for evening wear during warmer months. The breathability of these fabrics means you stay comfortable even in high temperatures, which is particularly crucial for active wearers or those living in hot climates.

Winter Apparel

For winter wear, opt for fabrics that provide insulation, such as wool and heavy synthetic blends. These materials can trap heat effectively, ensuring you stay warm. Velvet and flannel are also great options for adding both warmth and style. Fabrics like fleece and tweed offer additional layers of warmth, making them perfect for layering in colder climates.

Home Décor Fabric Choices

Fabrics for home décor projects like curtains, cushions, and upholstery require different features. Cotton and linen are excellent for their aesthetic and ease of care. Something durable and easy to clean, like microfiber or a polyester blend, is ideal for upholstery.

Curtains

For curtains, lightweight fabrics like cotton and linen work well for a breezy, casual look. Consider using thicker materials such as velvet or brocade for a formal environment, as they offer improved insulation and block out more light. Fabrics with a tight weave can block out more light and offer increased privacy, making them excellent choices for bedrooms and living areas.

Upholstery

Durability is critical when choosing upholstery fabric. Microfiber and heavy-duty polyester blends are popular because they’re easy to maintain and resist wear and tear. These fabrics can withstand frequent use without showing signs of damage, making them ideal for high-traffic areas like living rooms. Patterned fabrics can also hide stains and wear better than solid colors.

Tips for Working with Different Fabric Types

Each fabric type requires special handling during cutting, sewing, and finishing projects. Silk is delicate and often needs a finer needle, while thicker denim may require a stronger needle and thread. Becoming skilled in these techniques can result in a more refined result.

Cutting

For accurate cuts, utilize sharp scissors or a rotary cutter. Consider using tissue paper to stabilize the fabric during cutting for delicate fabrics like silk. It prevents it from shifting and ensures straight, clean cuts. To avoid permanent marks, permanently mark your fabric with a fabric-safe pen or chalk.

Sewing

Adjust your sewing machine settings based on the fabric. Use the appropriate needle type and size: fine needles for delicate fabrics and heavy-duty needles for thicker materials. Try out your stitches on a small piece of cloth beforehand to make sure the tension and stitch length are correct. Using the correct thread type is also crucial for seam durability.

Finishing

Press seams carefully based on the fabric’s heat sensitivity. Utilize a pressing cloth when ironing delicate fabrics to prevent scorching. Pressing seams rather than ironing them back and forth can also help maintain the garment’s shape and appearance. French seams and zigzag stitches provide clean finishes that prevent fraying.

From an ‘Oh No!’ Moment to Financial Readiness: Gwendolyn Calhoun’s Mission of Raising Awareness and Urgency

By: Maria Williams

Money makes the world go around. Though defied by some, this universal truth is embraced by the forward-thinking part of the population that strives for financial readiness and independence. To address the economic needs of 21st-century people, Gwendolyn Calhoun, a licensed and certified financial advisor based in Franklin, Pennsylvania, provides an all-encompassing array of services, from meticulous investment strategies and budgeting guidance to tax liability counseling.

Now an outcome-driven catalyst of change in the financial landscape, Gwendolyn’s career began in the heart of courtroom chaos, where she worked as a stenographer for over three decades. What ignited the change in her professional path was an epiphany—an ‘Oh no!’ moment during COVID-19, when Gwendolyn realized the assets and investments she had put in place weren’t nearly as secure as she once thought.

“The pandemic was all about uncertainty and anxiety. Just like most people, I was worried about the future,” she recollects. “I had an IRA, other investments, and substantial savings. But despite that, when I looked at my finances, I realized I wasn’t saving enough, my economics weren’t in order, and I was setting myself short for retirement.”

Motivated to feel financially ready for the future, Gwendolyn began working alongside a mentor, learning the ropes of budgeting, planning, and saving. That process, more than honing her skills and expertise, sparked another realization—there was a nationwide knowledge gap in economic prowess.

A general lack of urgency is what Gwendolyn ascribes to that void, saying, “Too many people believe they have all the time in the world to start planning for retirement. Truth is, the sooner, the better. If you start saving with 30 years to spare, it will cost you less than if you were to wake up at the age of 50. It’s much easier to put away $500 for 30 years than $5,000 for five or ten.” Fueling that problem is the deficit of the right education, one that prepares people since youth to tackle financial obstacles by equipping them with 21st-century-readiness skills.

More than hindering one’s chances for a serene, stress-free retirement, Gwendolyn believes that financial illiteracy propels the homeless problem. “Especially in the US, where homelessness rates are rising year-by-year, we have to delve deeper into the problem. Homelessness is not always a result of laziness,” she stresses. “Sometimes, it’s the aftermath of employees not knowing how to manage their finances. It’s not fair for people to work two or three jobs and barely be able to afford rent and monthly utilities.”

After leaving the courthouse realm, Gwendolyn, driven by her growing understanding of the issue, devoted her time to becoming a licensed financial advisor. As a freelance broker, she has collaborated with nearly 100 agencies, always dedicated to providing comprehensive and targeted solutions to diverse challenges people face. “I realized that the more educated I became, the more ready I felt for retirement or any emergencies,” Gwendolyn adds. “Now, I strive to empower others and help them feel protected in case of a sudden illness, inability to work, or an unexpected costly event.”

To fuel her mission of raising awareness, Gwendolyn forms meaningful connections with anyone she meets, delves into the cold outreach territory, and garners attention during live events. Dedicated to teaching clients how to make the most of the money they are earning, she curated a results-driven 3-step process to financial freedom:

1. Budgeting – knowing what and how much money is coming in and out;

2. Asset analysis – scrutinizing current policies, insurance, and investments;

3. Comprehensive assessment of all financial responsibilities and sources – aligning income, work, pension plans, 401K or IRA situations, and planning for retirement.

Though Gwendolyn addresses the needs of all clients, she specializes in guiding women and retirees. She explains, “I have seen women struggle with finances so many times. Too often, they rely on the men in their lives to make economic decisions, rarely taking the time to educate themselves. Then, if something happens to their husbands or they get divorced, they find themselves in a really difficult position, unable to seamlessly navigate the future. Retirees are another group that struggles; they have been brought up in different times, and not enough of them have put in the effort to shift their mindsets toward modern-day reality and needs.”

Looking into the future, Gwendolyn hopes to train more passionate financial advisors, fostering a thriving environment where all people can find guidance. “There is a lack of awareness, lack of financial education, and lack of urgency,” Gwendolyn affirms. “I want to use my story to ignite change in the mindsets of people. I want to reach as many as I can before they reach that ‘Oh no!’ moment like I have. Financial literacy is not about tackling problems when they arise; it’s about putting plans and measures in place that keep you financially protected and ready for any challenges.”

Fox Valley Pioneers Sustainable and Affordable Housing, Announcing Green Freedom, 17 New Houses for a Hand-up in Aurora

By: Maria Williams

Housing is a human right, not a privilege. While many people recognize the candor of this statement, the truth is— many struggle to find housing that is affordable, accessible, and in decent condition. To bridge this evident gap in society, Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit dedicated to providing each family and individual with equitable living conditions, constructs simple, decent homes through volunteer labor and donations. Recently, Fox Valley, Habitat for Humanity’s affiliate based in Illinois, announced the construction of 17 new homes in the city of Aurora, a project called Green Freedom fueled by the volunteers’ passion, donors’ commitment, and prospective owners’ hard work.

The development will offer low- to moderate-income families or individuals a unique chance to participate in a hand-up – not a hand-out – process and become homeowners. In other words, each family contributes labor, called “sweat equity,” to the construction of the neighborhood, including their future forever home. Not only does that decrease the cost of the house—it exponentially increases a sense of pride in ownership.

When asked about the inspiration behind the project, Jeffrey Barret, Fox Valley’s Executive Director, says, “It all started with one question: How do we build not only affordable housing but affordable living for our homeowners? The families who work with us are Fox Valley’s legacy, and they deserve decent living conditions and having a place they can call home without compromising their finances.”

To ensure affordability, Fox Valley implemented several measures that help families with the cost of not only purchasing but maintaining utilities long-term. Sweat equity, a system that requires families to contribute their time and effort, enables prospective homeowners to reduce the cost of the house and decrease mortgage rates while building a tight-knit community in the process. Depending on one’s situation, individuals and families are required to work between 350 and 500 hours, helping Fox Valley build the neighborhood. Working side by side with donors and volunteers – community, dignity, and respect are built.

In a bold step toward sustainability and affordability, Fox Valley has fostered meaningful partnerships that help make the houses energy-efficient. From collaborating with an eco-conscious gas firm to teaming up with an organization producing carbon-neutral concrete, Fox Valley remains dedicated to implementing sustainability into every design.

That second partnership is especially crucial since Fox Valley utilizes insulated concrete forms in the construction. The concrete is constructed in a way that keeps the home stable and sustainable. Additionally, high-quality windows stop air penetration from the outside, ensuring homes remain warm in the wintertime and pleasantly cool in the summer.

Creating net zero homes was a goal Fox Valley had strived to reach since the development began over two years ago. To achieve that, the nonprofit uses more natural materials, low-flow pipes and faucets, tankless water heaters, carbon-neutral concrete, solar energy with battery backup, and Smart appliances.

With hundreds of applications, Fox Valley meticulously chooses the families and individuals in the dire need who meet the requirements. Each applicant’s salary must fall between 30 and 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI), which is around $109,000. Always keeping at heart the central principle of a ”hand-up,” not a “hand-out,” homeowner families receive a zero percent mortgage, paying 30% of their income. “In Fox Valley, all families must live or work in the region, and – importantly – must be willing to build and become active members of the community,” says Jeff.

The development process is divided into three phases, spanning three years. In August, the foundations for the first stage will be laid. After that, Fox Valley, future owners, donors, and volunteers will build five houses over the next year. In the second and third years, the nonprofit plans on creating twelve more homes, six per annum. Aurora’s Mayor, Richard Irvin, endorsed the project at the State of the City Address in March 2023.

With the backing of the City, Nicor Gas, and other donors and partners, the Habitat Green Freedom community is on its way. But more funding is needed, and exciting opportunities exist for donors to be involved in the first affordable Green Neighborhood in the country. “Companies and individuals investing in the neighborhood have an opportunity to show the world that Green Freedom living is doable and affordable,” said Jeff. More than financial investors, Fox Valley is hoping to attract volunteers willing to visit the construction site and contribute their strength and time.

“If I didn’t help these families, I would be taking things for granted,” Jeffrey adds. “It’s not us who bless them. These families bless us with their stories, happiness, and gratitude, and I’m just grateful I get to witness their lives change.”

Kelly Boyd-Rivera Leading Cadmus Dental Lab with Vision and Integrity

By: Maria Williams

When one thinks about dentistry, the only thing that springs to mind is a dentist who examines teeth, works on them, and everything happens magically behind their office wall. This is exactly what Kelly Boyd-Rivera thought. Her journey into the dental industry began somewhat serendipitously. “Fifteen years ago, I didn’t even know dental labs existed,” she recalls. Her curiosity and determination soon led her to uncover the immense potential within the dental lab industry. Further, recognizing the need for scalability without compromising quality, she embarked on a mission to revolutionize how dental labs operate.

A pioneer in her field today, Kelly has leveraged her 15 years of industry expertise, along with her background in advertising to transform her company Cadmus Dental Lab into a leader in dental solutions, on track to achieve a staggering $70 million in revenue this year. The laboratory distinguishes itself through a unique combination of rapid turnaround times, exceptional quality, and competitive pricing. These achievements are not just business strategies but a reflection of Kelly’s philosophy. “I never make a promise that I cannot keep. We are only as good as our last case,” she asserts. This commitment to integrity has fostered deep trust with their clients, setting Cadmus apart in an industry often plagued by finger-pointing and unmet expectations.

Kelly’s approach to her relationships with dentists is revolutionary. She openly acknowledges the 1% of cases that might fall short of expectations and actively seeks feedback to drive continuous improvement. “If we take on a case and it does not turn out right for the patient, we own it. This builds tremendous trust with our clients,” she explains. This ethos of accountability and partnership has been pivotal in Cadmus’ rapid growth, boasting a 25% increase month over month.

A life-altering catastrophe left Kelly with severe burns, which marked a watershed moment in her career. The outpouring of support from the dental community during her recovery was overwhelming and reaffirmed her influence in the industry. “I received so many messages and flowers. It was then I realized the impact I had made,” she shares. This incident became the catalyst for founding this dental lab hero company, driven by the recognition and trust she had earned over the years.

Scaling a dental lab while maintaining high standards is no small feat. Kelly’s previous corporate experience equipped her with the skills to think big while staying grounded in quality. “Every case is unique, just like a fingerprint. The challenge was to scale this custom product while ensuring high quality and turnaround time,” she notes. Kelly explains Cadmus’ success is in no small part the result of a proud partnership with an esteemed Southeast China lab – a relationship that began over 15 years ago and still continues to flourish to this day.

Despite its international presence, Cadmus maintains the feel of a local lab, nurturing individualized relationships with dentists. This personal touch sets them apart. Further, her background in advertising has instilled in her a deep understanding of customer needs and service delivery. “These are lessons I brought from advertising to the dental lab industry.”

A trailblazer in a predominantly male-dominated industry, Kelly Boyd-Rivera is one of only three women globally who own a dental lab of such scale. Yet, she doesn’t see her competition as other women but the entire industry. “I am in this industry with everyone – local, national, international labs. Every day we strive to feel like a small local lab with an individual touch; while delivering on an international scale,” she affirms. As Cadmus continues to grow, it does so on a foundation of strong values and a commitment to excellence, guided by a leader who epitomizes the ideal of what the dental industry can offer.

Dr. B Dental Solutions Continues Growth Streak With Extraordinary Performance in 2023

Dr. B Dental Solutions, a disruptive denture care brand taking on the goliaths of traditional denture products, has just completed a spectacular year of progress on its mission to improve the lives of the 42 million Americans who wear dentures. In the short time between launching their first product in 2018, and today, Dr. B Dental Solutions has made an outsize impact on the centuries-old denture market.

In 2023, the company multiplied its revenue, closed a successful funding round, migrated its fulfillment operations to a national hub model, made distribution deals with the largest denture-focused dental office networks in the country, and introduced several new highly anticipated products to its growing fanbase.

The momentum continues in 2024, with Dr. B Dental Solutions earning a top spot on Inc. Magazine’s 5000 Fastest Growing Companies, placing at an extraordinary #66 out of 5,000 Southeastern companies, one of America’s most competitive regions. In response to surging direct-to-consumer sales across multiple online platforms, the company began the year by enhancing its inventory management system and logistics to prepare for scaling up and meeting projected demand. The focus on operations came about when the brand experienced stockouts throughout 2023 due to selling out of its best–selling products. Through strategic hires and implementing best-in-class systems, the company was able to transition to a more cost-effective and efficient model to serve its customers.

Despite facing challenges due to stock shortages, the company achieved remarkable annual revenue growth. From 2022 to 2023, business-to-consumer sales surged by 287%, while e-commerce sales soared by 732% compared to the previous year. The increased sales volume led to higher shipping costs, prompting the company to revamp its shipping model. The company transitioned from a single fulfillment center in Florida to a nationally decentralized hub model, distributing products from four warehouses. This strategic move resulted in significant cost savings and shorter delivery times, with over 97% of customer deliveries now falling within shipping zones 1 and 2, as opposed to the majority previously being in shipping zones 3 and 4.

In the B2B sector, Dr. B Dental Solutions achieved notable success. In 2023, the company formed partnerships with several chains of dental offices, gaining exposure to 1.5 million new customers annually and significantly boosting revenue. This strategic relationship also benefits denture wearers, who are now being introduced to the first comprehensive denture care cleaning system that caters to all of their needs.

The customer-centric company was born from cosmetic dentist Dr. Lorin Berland’s 45 years of hands-on experience working with denture-wearers. Before becoming an internationally recognized dentist, he started his career as a denture-technician, so denture-wearers were always on his mind. Over this time, he saw dental treatments and technology make rapid advancements, yet denture care products remained the same as they were 50 years ago. Knowing that denture-wearers deserved better, he enlisted his son, Jean-Paul, and together they set out to create a line of products that actually addressed the needs of this large and growing population.

The father-son passion project has quickly morphed into a highly successful business that is pioneering a market transformation. Early on, the company made headlines when its Denture Adhesive became the first ever to earn the prestigious American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. The ADA Seal of Acceptance is the gold standard for dental products. It can only be earned after rigorous testing by the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs. In almost 100 years of history, not a single denture adhesive had ever been awarded this mark of safety and efficacy. Today, Dr. B Dental Solutions remains the first and only brand to have earned multiple ADA Seals across every denture category.

When asked about Dr. B Dental Solutions’ growth, Jean-Paul said “The company’s success is because of its revolutionary approach to an industry that hasn’t seen innovation in decades. From the beginning, Dr. B Dental Solutions has leveraged unparalleled denture expertise to produce products designed to improve quality of life and address the common, yet serious issues impacting denture wearers’ health, comfort, and wellness. The milestones we’ve accomplished have all occurred because we spent years listening to denture-wearers who told us exactly what they needed to make their lives better.”

Dr. B Dental Solutions is poised to surpass its 2023 performance and scale rapidly. The company is preparing for this new level of growth by releasing a pocket-sized denture adhesive for on-the-go application and rolling out the next stage of its marketing strategy, which focuses on educating consumers on how to live their best lives with dentures while helping them avoid the most common denture-related issues that can have a major impact on their quality of life.

As Dr. B Dental Solutions’ young team continues revolutionizing the denture care market, the focus will always be on honoring Dr. Berland’s legacy and his mission to help millions of denture wearers have happier and healthier lives.

Redefining the Future of Art through Technology: Asta Ivanauskienė’s Mission Behind Ars Futuri

By: Maria Williams

Conversations centered around technology, specifically AI, have permeated our lives, finding their way into virtually all industries. Among the fields striving to implement more high-tech solutions in the future, culture emerges as one with boundless potential for honoring creativity by democratizing the landscape. Asta Ivanauskienė, an avid art enthusiast passionate about modernizing and streamlining the sector, aims to disrupt the current cultural realm with Ars Futuri, a Lithuania-based ArtTech startup ready to empower creators, collectors, and investors with the launch of an AI-powered app.

After excelling in diverse industries, from international relations and diplomacy to marketing and event management, Asta rediscovered her deepest passion—culture. While being a producer for contemporary art events and exhibitions, she witnessed a striking void in the industry—the lack of transparency in evaluating art pieces. As Asta emphasizes, current methods rely on nothing but the price tag attached to the canvas, which turns accurate appraisal into a daunting task.

That missing part affects all people engaged in culture, often obstructing financial satisfaction and trust. For collectors, the lack of clear pathways to determining the price carries a risk of overpaying when buying from institutions or during auctions. Artists grapple with different challenges; while it is the creator who sets the initial value, many painters or sculpturists seek help from PR experts, galleries, or agents. This need to use the services of 3rd party providers significantly reduces the final income artists could generate if there were systems that objectively evaluate their work.

Throughout the years, Asta witnessed the glaring differences between artwork pricing, curious about how one artwork could be worth extraordinary amounts of money and another one – visually and material-wise similar to the first – could be priced at close to nothing. By addressing these issues in the Ars Futuri app, Asta hopes to alleviate the challenges art sellers encounter.

The conceptualization of this cutting-edge platform occurred in 2022 during Asta’s tenure at the museum, when she started raising questions percolating around the art industry. “I realized it wasn’t just the consumers and art dealers who needed help, but the whole industry,” she adds.

Combining AI and machine learning with Asta’s life-long cultural infatuation, she has curated a comprehensive tool designed to become the new go-to for collectors, artists, and more. For those who indulge in artwork recreationally, the app will open the doors to feeding curiosity. “Now, if I go to a museum or an exhibition, I can scan any piece of art and find out the objective estimated price with a rundown of all factors that contributed to the value,” Asta explains.

Though culture roots back to the depths of human emotions, in today’s world, financial stability is essential. By leveraging the app, artists will be able to define their status, possibilities, and value, and collectors will know what ROI to expect from a hefty purchase.

Annifer, UAB the parent company of Ars Futuri is currently in the process of developing the platform’s prototype. That venture is fueled by a grant received from the Lithuanian government, a milestone showcasing the public’s concern about the culture sector. Looking into the future, Asta hopes to form meaningful partnerships and attract investors within the art sphere, striving to unite all culture enthusiasts to set the stage for a better tomorrow.

“Visual art, literature, performance, and more all deserve to be nurtured,” she shares. “If there are no democratized systems that autonomously determine art’s value, creators are more likely to feel underappreciated, and collectors are bound to generate less ROI. Art is everywhere. But without effective solutions, it won’t be able to thrive. That’s what Ars Futuri is all about—leveraging technology to fuel human creativity.”

Thomas Lawson: A Multifaceted Figure in Contemporary Art

By: Maria Williams

Vincent van Gogh once said, “I am seeking, I am striving, I am in it with all my heart.” This sentiment captures the journey of Thomas Lawson, a multifaceted artist who understands life through the lens of art. The Scotland-born has been drawn to art from a young age despite not having a clear path to a career in the field.

His parents, though supportive, couldn’t provide specific guidance in the arts. Thomas also faced resistance when he expressed his desire to study art seriously at his academically inclined high school. This early pushback only strengthened his resolve, however. The determined man took weekend classes at the local art school and continued to pursue art alongside his academic studies.

Thomas later earned a place at the University of St. Andrews, where he participated in establishing an art club. He also persuaded the university to allow an unused school building to serve as a studio space, illustrating his dedication to making a positive impact. After obtaining his undergraduate degree, he went to the University of Edinburgh to study modern art history which included 18th-century art and architecture.

These experiences broadened his understanding of modern and contemporary art. Thomas’ exposure to contemporary art projects, especially those organized by Scottish art impresario Richard Demarco, and the memorable performances of German artist Joseph Beuys also reinforced his passion to immerse himself more in the field.

Recognizing that his ambitions required him to explore outside of his homeland, Thomas found himself in London. Unfortunately, he deemed the cultural climate unwelcoming for a Scottish artist. An opportunity to move to New York emerged when he was encouraged to interview the renowned American painter and sculptor Jasper Johns for his graduate thesis. This brought Thomas to New York, where the city’s vibrant art scene captured him.

In 1975, the aspiring artist moved to New York, seeking a community to challenge and nurture his growth. Thomas quickly became an active participant in the city’s dynamic art world. Here, he thrived as both an artist and a writer. He contributed reviews and essays to prominent art publications such as Art in America and Flash Art by the late 1970s and began showing work in a number of artist-run spaces.

Four years following his move to New York, Thomas co-founded the REALLIFE Magazine with his wife, Susan Morgan. This publication became a crucial platform for emerging artists of the time. It served as a space to explore and reinvestigate the power of imagery in a period dominated by conceptual art. Throughout the decade, Thomas exhibited his work regularly at notable galleries in New York, Los Angeles, and London. Following this he also began creating public art projects, including temporary murals in various cities across the United States and the United Kingdom.

During this decade Thomas partially supported himself by teaching at various art schools on the East Coast and began thinking about the importance of art education.  The rising artist’s career took a turn when he accepted the opportunity of a full-time position at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) which allowed him to directly influence the way art is taught and discussed. He started as the dean of the School of Art in 1991, nurturing new generations of artists. “I view teaching as an important aspect of my artistic practice,” Thomas shares. “I aim to bridge the gap between making art and teaching it because I recognize the profound relationship between the two.”

Interestingly, his tenure at CalArts coincided with a period of personal artistic renewal. A survey exhibition in Glasgow along with the passing of his parents, prompted Thomas to reexamine his studio work and rethink his relationship with the United Kingdom and the British art world. He was the co-selector for the British Art Show in 1995 which was the first institutional recognition of the YBA phenomenon. During the later years of the decade, he began a multifaceted project that included books and painting installations developed from research in the national archives.

The early 2000s was even more exhilarating for Thomas, as his interest in painting was reignited. His editorial work continued with the London-based journal Afterall, where he served as co-editor until 2009. Thomas maintained a presence in Los Angeles and New York galleries while contributing essays on several contemporary painters. His work was recognized by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, an organization that grants awards to exceptional artists, scholars, and scientists.

The accomplished professional launched East of Borneo, an online magazine and archive on the art and cultural history of Los Angeles, in the same year. This platform allowed him to delve more into the artistic contributions of CalArts and the broader Los Angeles art scene. At this time, he also curated projects that connected historical and contemporary art practices, including a symposium on experimental pedagogies at CalArts and a community-centered book project in South LA.

The worldwide pandemic that hit in 2020 caused disruptions in the cultural art scene, but Thomas has continued to paint and write. When asked about his motivation, the artist answers, “I’ve lived in Los Angeles for almost 35 years now, yet I still can’t fully grasp how amazing it is that when you walk around the streets, there is always the possibility of finding something unexpected—something that would inspire you to explore complex ideas and themes.”

Ultimately, Thomas Lawson remains committed to artistic and intellectual exploration, whether on canvas, in the classroom, or through the written word. With a passionate spirit, he continues to inspire new generations of artists while contributing to the advancement of modern art.

INZECTO Announces Two Novel Pest Control Products at Pest World Conference

Premier developer and distributor of pest control products, INZECTO, announces the release of BLUVY® Sand Fly Light Traps and HydroTrail®, a product for termite control. The company’s products cover a range of pest control needs, with a specific focus on reducing mosquito populations in an effective and eco-friendly manner. INZECTO hopes to empower professional pest control companies and governmental agencies to mitigate the spread of infectious diseases with these product expansions. In the coming years, INZECTO also aims to address consumer’s pain points with additional solutions.

Across the globe, mosquitoes and insects are irritating pests that cause significant harm to people, not to mention the possibility of significant damage to real estate that can be generated by the spreading of termites. Mosquitoes cause more fatalities than any other creature globally because of the transmission of diseases. Disease control entities and private pest control companies are constantly working to find more effective ways to address the ongoing issues. Little innovation has been seen in the sector, leaving people with few solutions to serious problems.

INZECTO aims to close the gap with patented technology that has demonstrated unprecedented success in managing pests. In partnership with the University of Florida, the company developed novel technology for mosquito and pest eradication. INZECTO’s products had such critical use cases that the company received a grant from the Pentagon to support research and development efforts. INZECTO has just announced two new products that will expand the company’s vision of managing pests through simple and safe methodologies.

During the Pest World Conference in Denver, Colorado, INZECTO announced the release of one of the only light traps targeting mosquitoes and sand flies. The patented product uses two light wavelengths to attract insects such as sand flies and biting midges and mosquitoes. Unlike traditional light traps, INZECTO’s BLUVY® innovation kills up to five times more sand flies and mosquitoes. These results are thanks to the patented light color combination and a special filter system that can retain the smallest biting insects.

INZECTO BLUVY® can be used indoors and outdoors in areas affected by these annoying pests. They provide consistent relief to users by operating 24/7 with low power consumption and zero chemical insecticides. INZECTO BLUVY® is effective against all species of mosquitoes and sand flies, including those that transmit serious diseases to humans and animals. The weather-resistant, compact product covers an area of up to 5.400 ft2.

INZECTO BLUVY® is one of the first products to combine LED and blue light to attract and kill more insects,” says CEO Enrico Levi. “This product release is very exciting for INZECTO because BLUVY completes our existing mosquito control line, proving that we can provide a strong form of mosquito control with minimal insecticide use.” INZECTO is also launching HydroTrail®, which is a product for controlling termite populations by improving the performances of the existing control stations. Both products address a major need in the US market, where mosquitoes and termites cause extensive damage to homes and people’s well-being. These products will also be available globally through our network of distributors, enabling INZECTO to have a larger impact.”

INZECTO’s termite traps will penetrate the soil to attract and lead termites to control stations, to allow for early detection of termite presence in the soil and protect homes and structures. Global warming and limited innovation in regards to new devices and control systems have allowed termites to spread unabated throughout the US, wreaking havoc on infrastructure. INZECTO’s new product will disrupt this issue with an effective, eco-friendly pest control solution.

INZECTO has built a track record for scientific excellence and innovation since its inception. The company was selected as one of the Top 20 University Start-Ups in 2019 and a finalist for the 2019 Financial Times and World Bank Transformational Business Awards. As INZECTO expands its footprint into other pest control markets, the company remains dedicated to spearheading safe, accessible, and scientifically supported products.
