From June 15 to June 16, 2024, the Abigail Ogilvy Gallery became the focal point for an exhibition entitled “A Līmen: In-between and Beyond.” This innovative exhibition showcases the collaborative works of Yushan Jiang and Shuang Chen, two architectural designers whose designs transcend traditional boundaries to probe into the realm of liminality.

The concept of a līmen is intriguing in its essence. It represents not just a threshold but also serves as a bridge connecting disparate realms. This idea finds profound expression in the exhibition through five distinct yet interconnected works. Each piece delves into the dynamics between privacy and publicness, history and future, informal and formal settings – all within varying architectural contexts.

Shuang Chen, alongside her Yale University classmate Robin Yang, brings to life ‘Moment and Eternity,’ a piece inspired by the serene yet poignant landscape of Qiandao Lake in China. The creation of Xinanjiang Hydropower Station and Three Gorges Dam dramatically altered this geography, submerging ancient villages under water and giving birth to Qiandao Lake. Their work commemorates this transformation through a memorial design that captures the essence of fluctuating water levels which define this unique zone. A proposed ring structure on an island marks these fluctuations, symbolizing not only the lake’s submerged islands but also projecting into future possibilities where receding waters may once again reveal these lost villages.

Important,  so is avoiding burnout. “I believe in work sprints, 30 to 60 days maximum.  I once did a 5 year sprint with my business and while I achieved a great amount, I also lost a lot. I lost my health which was the most impactful. Not only being unable to work, but also losing cherished time with my family.  Endless unsustainable amounts of work is NOT the answer to success.” Ditchfield recounts. He champions working smarter, not harder, through delegation, automation, and mastering efficiency. But efficiency is just one piece of the puzzle.

Wanting to break free from all that imprisoned him, Ditchfield’s journey began at a young age, working and selling by any means necessary. He started his first company in his hometown of Ojai, California, at 19. Not long after, he received a devastating diagnosis: Crohn’s disease, a rare and debilitating condition, left him hospital-bound and just 122lbs at 6’2” when he was 25. “When the doctors told me to write my will, I wallowed for 90 seconds before adopting my ‘the rules don’t apply to me’ attitude,” Skyler said. “I set out to research my way out of this.”

Confined to hospital beds for months with a grim prognosis, Ditchfield refused to accept his fate. He embarked on a relentless pursuit of recovery, discovering multiple ways to conquer the disease. Against the “so-called odds,” it worked. This marked a turning point, not just in his health but also in his perspective on life. “I was determined to never be held back or accept what anyone else projected onto me or the world,” Ditchfield added. “I didn’t believe anything I was told anymore. I knew anything was possible. I always loved research and learning, so building my body, mind, and business to be undefeatable became my goal.”

During his three-year pursuit of recovery, he not only lost his prior business but also became nearly homeless. Regaining his confidence after saving his own life and with the upcoming arrival of a daughter, Ditchfield found a deeper purpose. “Starting from the bottom again means you have nothing to lose; it’s the most powerful place to be.” Skyler said. Over the next 14+ years, he built and scaled a nine-figure telecommunications company, where he currently serves as Executive Chairman of the Board. When Crohn’s stripped away in months all the muscle that took years to build, I felt defeated.” Skyler further reflected that he eventually saw the event as a gift that empowered him to learn how to rebuild his body, but better.

I remember being very fearful as a kid—fearful of having my head beaten in at school, which happened many times, and fearful of the bigger guy who wanted to take the few dollars I had. I wasn’t the biggest guy, but my energy could be felt by others, and that fearlessness is the key to standing out, standing up, and succeeding in the world. Fear disconnects us from ourselves and from God.”

His biggest passions are family, his wife and daughter, helping others, researching all things health, working out, and fast modified cars (from new luxury to old muscle cars.)
