Pepsi Advertisement With Kendall Jenner (2017)

This is an infamous brand marketing blunder from PepsiCo. The company collaborated with the celebrity and influencer Kendall Jenner for a commercial. Whilst the idea sounded great on paper, the execution was tone-deaf.

The commercial featured Kendall Jenner joining a protest, and handing a police officer a can of Pepsi. After taking a sip of the beverage, the police officer and protestors have the sudden realization they share their love of Pepsi, and the protest comes to a halt.

The commercial only lasted a day before the company pulled it from media platforms. It was criticized for making light of social issues and disregarding problems like police brutality and the importance of protesting.

This Pepsi advertisement should be a strong reminder for anyone working in branding or project management. Always research the current social climate when planning a marketing strategy, and run advertisement tests with your target audience before releasing it.

Burger King’s Women’s Day Tweet

Even good intentions can result in marketing blunders, and Burger King is no exception. On International Women’s Day in 2021, the company’s UK division published a thread, with the first tweet being ‘Women belong in the kitchen.’

The following tweets covered gender inequality in the hospitality business, and how only 20% of women are chefs. The initial tweet was just supposed to be controversial—which it was—and get people’s attention.

However,  people didn’t read past the first tweet, as it missed the mark and came off as misogynistic. Burger King just wanted to announce their new scholarship initiative to help women get a degree in culinary arts and reduce the gender gap in the industry.

The key lesson here is to not only think about the message but also how it’s presented. Burger King wanted to reduce the gender gap and encourage female equality, but their presentation came off as misogynistic and poorly planned. 

Zara’s Insensitive Ad Campaign (2023)

In November 2023, the famous Spanish fashion brand, Zara, released a new ad campaign featuring mannequins surrounded by rubble and covered in white sheets. It was immediately met with criticism, and called out as ‘tasteless’, considering the current issue in Gaza.

Zara’s campaign sparked outrage, resulting in the company quickly addressing the poor time and insensitivity.

This marketing campaign is a great showcase of how important timing and being socially aware are. Insensitive marketing can lead to damaging brand reputation, alienating consumers, and loss in sales.

Learning From Mistakes

Crafting a brand marketing strategy can be difficult, as pointed out in the examples—even the biggest brands can miss the mark sometimes. It’s always important to do research before crafting a marketing strategy.

When you’re putting together a strategy for brand marketing, we always recommend considering:

  • Thoroughly researching any data and analytics. This includes how similar marketing strategies have performed for competitor’s products and the target audience for your brand.
  • Consider the potential market and audience for your product. The brand and message should resonate with the consumer.

Tips For Presenting Office Fruit Platters

For office buffets, snack bars, and corporate events, make corporate fruit platters that look delicious. Keep reading to learn how to make fruit plates look irresistible like a pro.

1. Cut along the lines of the fruit.

Follow the shape of the fruit as you cut, no matter what size it is or how thick its skin is. That way, the fruit will keep its pretty look and as much of the edible meat as possible will be saved. 

Tongs and cutlery are better for small slices of fruit, while skewers are better for bigger pieces. You could add some fun by cutting some of the fruit into shapes. Grapefruit, melons, and citrous fruits all look good with zigzag cuts. 

Putting fruit on the platter doesn’t mean you have to cut and peel it all. In real life, think about what will help the guests the most. For instance, it’s easy to eat a piece of watermelon with the peel still on, but the texture of the pineapple is more stringy if the skin is left on. 

A professional pineapple cutter takes off the skin and the fibre-filled middle of the pineapple without throwing away any of the fruit. You’ll have pineapple that’s ready to serve in no time. 

2. Show a range of colours and textures

Another tip from corporate caterers for making fruit platters look tempting is to use a variety of colours and textures. Fruit plates make the colour wheel come to life. On a fruit plate, blueberries, strawberries, pineapples, oranges, and kiwis are all popular and bright fruits. 

Cutting some fruit open to show the insides can make the display more interesting. For instance, cut bananas in half lengthwise but leave the tops of the halves together. Then, spread the strawberries out on the plate. People who eat the fruit will see the colours and designs on the inside and outside. 

When they get brown, pears, apples, and bananas do too. You might want to serve these fruits whole on the plate. Grapes can also be kept in bunches so they don’t roll off the plate. 

3. Make a design that looks good

Put the fruit on a plate that doesn’t have a lot of patterns on it. You can arrange the fruit in either a regular or an abstract way. Start putting the fruit in the plate in the middle and work your way out to avoid leaving small holes that are hard to fill. 

Spread the fruit slices out to make a pretty picture. Cut the fruit up if it doesn’t fit nicely on the plate.

Since the fruit spreads out from the middle, you might want to put something bigger in the middle. You can put a bunch of grapes in the middle and turn the grapes over to cover the stalk. 

You might want to offer things besides fruit, like popcorn, nuts, marshmallows, and dips. Put these things in small bowls all over the tray to make it look more interesting and keep them dry. Lastly, fill in the spaces with fresh herbs like mint, rosemary, thyme, and berries.  

Ideas for corporate fruit platters 

Think about what’s in season and the colour scheme you want to use when putting together an epic fruit platter. Rainbow is always a hit, but any idea will do. This fruit tray may have the following:

You don’t have to go all out if you don’t have a lot of options or your budget is tight. Keep things simple. If you can find one unique item or even cut one of them, like melon, into a shape you wouldn’t expect, it will really make your fruit plate stand out. 

It’s okay if not. For a great effect, just follow the tips below: 

For fruit, use a different cutting board: We’ve had a highly coloured cutting board for years that we only use for fruit. At least our watermelon will never taste like onions and garlic again. This tip can be used for your fruit dish or just in everyday life.

Strive for plenty: Choose a plate that is just big enough for the fruit you want to serve. This will make it look like it’s very full. This little trick spreads a feeling of kindness and plenty, which is good for everyone. 

You might want to use a few less popular fruits: The dragon fruit, star fruit, cape gooseberries, and yellow kiwi on this platter are all pleasant discoveries. People love it when you include at least one unusual item to mix things up. 

You should start by putting one or two dip bowls on the plate so you don’t forget to leave room for the fruit dip. 

Which fruits go best on a fruit platter?

Several things will impact on which seasonal fruit is best for a corporate fruit platter: the time of year and what people want.

Most of the time, food that is in season is cheaper and tastes better. There are a lot of good winter foods, like apples, citrous, and tropical fruits. Berry, stone fruit, and melon are fun to eat in the summer. 

Your guests may be more sophisticated. You can either impress them with a variety of fruits that aren’t commonly found in your area, OR (and this is usually our favourite choice) make them feel at home and loved by serving comfort foods. 

Dragonfruit, star fruit, and even some unusual types of apples are “fancy” fruits that people in my group really like. Strawberries, bananas, and grapes are all “comfort” foods, especially when dipped in chocolate. These are also great options if a lot of kids are coming to your party.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in design?

Wen Xie: My journey into design began at Staffordshire Business School, where I had the chance to work with big companies like Oppo and Apple, providing digital transformation plans from a business perspective. This experience gave me a solid foundation in understanding how technology can drive business growth and efficiency. Later, my time at the SVA MFA Products of Design department allowed me to combine my business acumen with design skills, excelling in the world of product design. This unique combination of business and design has positioned me perfectly at the intersection of these fields, enabling me to approach digital transformation with a holistic perspective. My professional journey continued to evolve with roles at L’Oréal, NIO, and now FanDuel, each providing unique challenges and opportunities to apply and expand my expertise in digital transformation.

Q: Your work has been recognized with various awards and features. Can you share some highlights?

Wen Xie: While my main focus is always on the impact of the work rather than the accolades, some highlights include designing the driving experience for NIO’s new energy smart cars, which won an iF Design Award. At L’Oréal, I led the transition of offline shopping experiences to the e-commerce platform on WeChat Mini Program, pioneering the design of YSL’s beauty e-commerce Mini Program with an AR virtual try-on feature. Currently, at FanDuel, I’m focused on responsible gaming products, ensuring our digital solutions promote healthy user behaviors. These projects reaffirm my belief in the potential of thoughtful and innovative design.

Q: Digital transformation is a big focus for you. Can you elaborate on this?

Wen Xie: Digital transformation is at the heart of what I do. It’s about leveraging technology to create more efficient, effective, and engaging experiences for users. For example, at L’Oréal, I spearheaded the transition of offline shopping experiences to the e-commerce platform on WeChat Mini Program. By integrating AR technology, I designed a virtual try-on feature for YSL’s beauty products, allowing users to virtually try on products and share their experiences within WeChat’s social network. This innovation not only enhanced customer satisfaction but also significantly reduced product returns.

At NIO, I designed the driving experience for their new energy smart cars, winning an iF Design Award. This project involved creating an intuitive, user-friendly interface that leveraged advanced digital technologies to enhance the driving experience.

At FanDuel, we utilize a wide range of technologies, including recommendation engines and metadata, to enhance responsible gaming. These technologies provide better insights and controls for users, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable gaming environment. By leveraging these tools, we can anticipate and prevent problem gaming behaviors more effectively than traditional offline methods. Digital transformation enables us to rethink and redesign user experiences in ways that were previously unimaginable.

Q: What excites you most about the future of digital transformation?

Wen Xie: The future of digital transformation is incredibly exciting. Technologies like recommendation engines and metadata analysis are just the beginning. I see a future where these technologies are seamlessly integrated into our daily lives, creating experiences that are not only more engaging but also more meaningful. At FanDuel, we’re at the forefront of exploring these possibilities to enhance responsible gaming. Additionally, the continuous advancements in AI and machine learning offer new ways to personalize and improve user experiences on a scale we’ve never seen before.

Q: Any advice for aspiring designers who want to focus on digital transformation?

Wen Xie: My advice would be to stay curious and always put the user at the center of your design process. Empathy is crucial in understanding the real needs and challenges people face. Also, never underestimate the power of collaboration. Some of the best ideas come from working with others and combining different perspectives. Embrace digital transformation and stay ahead of technological trends to keep your designs relevant and forward-thinking. Always be ready to learn and adapt, as the digital landscape is constantly evolving.

Q: What’s next for you in your career?

Wen Xie: In the short term, I will continue to work with FanDuel on responsible gaming initiatives. Designing healthy gaming experiences is a new frontier in digital transformation, and I am committed to pioneering this area. The rapid development of AI and metadata offers unprecedented opportunities to create a safer, more enjoyable gaming environment. Gambling addiction is recognized as a mental health issue by the WHO, with 2.5 million Americans affected. My work at FanDuel is driven by a strong sense of responsibility and the knowledge that I am contributing to mental health and user well-being. Responsible gaming is not limited to the gambling industry; as digital technology advances, screen time increases, leading to potential addiction to social media and games, especially among teenagers. Our research and design applications can significantly improve digital product experiences, promoting healthier habits and protecting users.

In the long term, I aim to continue innovating and conducting research to stay at the forefront of emerging trends and technologies. Expanding into new markets and geographies, integrating sustainability and corporate social responsibility into future activities, and maintaining a customer-centric approach are also key goals. Collaborating with industry partners to develop innovative solutions and create shared value is another important aspect of my long-term vision.
