What is Gen Z?

Generation Z is the demographic cohort that comes after the Millennials (Generation Y) and consists of people born between the mid-1990s and onwards. Gen Z currently makes up 27% of the US population, making it the most significant generation in American history.

It is the first generation to have grown up entirely in the digital age, with access to smartphones, social media, and the internet from a very young age. Consequently, this has influenced their values, attitudes, and behaviors, making them more tech-savvy, socially conscious, and diverse than previous generations.

Despite their young age, people of Generation Z are known for their desire for authenticity, emphasis on personalization and individuality, and entrepreneurial spirit. According to the latest Microsoft survey, around 62% of all Gen Z people have started or are about to create their own businesses, and 48% of Gen Z individuals have multiple side jobs, which is a higher percentage than small business owners (34%).

With a strong desire for independence and a deep understanding of technology, many Gen Zers have already made their mark as successful personalities. Let’s take a look at a few notable examples of Gen Z individuals who have achieved a particular success at a young age.

  • Greta Thunberg

Greta Thunberg, born in 2003, is a Swedish environmental activist who gained international attention for her efforts to combat climate change. Her activism quickly gained traction, and she has since become a prominent voice in the global climate movement, inspiring millions of young people worldwide to take action on the issue. Nowadays, she influences millions on social media and keeps visiting numerous international events, including the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

  • Tanmay Bakshi

Here’s another example: Tanmay Bakshi, a Canadian-Indian software developer, and IBM Watson developer who started programming at the age of 5. He is now a highly sought-after speaker and has collaborated with major companies such as Apple and Google to create innovative technologies.

The success of young individuals from Gen Z serves as a shining example of their abilities and potential. Whether through activism, entrepreneurship, or innovation, many Gen Zeers have already made significant contributions to society.

The Role of Technology in Gen Z’s social skills

As the first generation to grow up in a world increasingly connected through technology, Gen Z’s social skills have been shaped by their relationship with digital tools and platforms. With constant access to social media, instant messaging, and other digital communication tools, Gen Z has developed unique social skills that differ from previous generations.

As employees at the companies, Gen Z truly values:

  • Work-life balance (particularly after observing their parents’ arduous work schedules that often led to limited time for family and leisure activities);
  • Opportunities for growth and development within the company they work at;
  • Employees who are open to different cultures respect lifestyles and identities.

All these make Gen Z a highly inclusive and tolerant generation.

Due to their comfort and proficiency in digital communication tools and platforms:

  • They stand for clear and direct communication, which helps them successfully lead negotiations and talk to customers. Excellent communication skills also help them network, significantly influencing their career. For instance, recent market statistics indicate that 93% of Gen Z individuals use social media platforms. These platforms are primarily utilized for general communication and staying up-to-date on current affairs.
  • Adaptable and flexible when it comes to new situations and challenges due to growing up in a rapidly changing world. For instance, Gen Z people have shown adaptability and flexibility in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. When schools and universities worldwide suddenly had to shift to remote learning, Gen Z students quickly adapted to online learning platforms and digital tools, such as Zoom and Google Classroom. They also found innovative ways to collaborate and support each other virtually, such as through online study groups and virtual mental health check-ins.
  • Creative and innovative. Gen Z develops unique solutions to problems, such as creating apps to make people’s life easier and more comfortable. For instance, a 20-year-old software developer, Ryan Doyon, created a unique “NoteBloc” platform that uses artificial intelligence to convert handwritten notes into digital text. Doyon developed the idea as a high school student when he struggled to keep up with taking notes in class.
  • They are excellent team players. Another excellent example of successful teamwork is the skincare company’s founders, Two Lippy Ladies. The company was founded by two sisters, Isabella, and Elizabeth Barrett, who were both still in high school. They started the company to create natural skincare products that were affordable and accessible to everyone. The sisters worked together to develop the products, build the brand, and market the company through social media. It indicates a willingness to work together towards a shared objective, demonstrating a collaborative mindset.

Navigating the generational divide

Navigating the generational divide in the workplace refers to the challenge of managing and working with individuals from different age groups, each with their own values, expectations, and communication styles.

While it can lead to more significant innovation and problem-solving capabilities, it also presents challenges in creating a cohesive and collaborative work environment that meets the needs of all employees. Let’s examine those benefits and challenges in more detail:

Benefits:

  • Generation Z is expected to be a more valuable workforce than previous generations because they possess the necessary skills to leverage advanced technologies, which is essential in the current high-tech business world.
  • Gen Z employees look for more than just employment. They value opportunities for personal and professional development and growth, which can benefit companies that prioritize investing in their employees. Such opportunities can increase job satisfaction, employee retention, and overall productivity, helping a company’s bottom line. By attracting and retaining talented Gen Z employees, companies can secure a competitive advantage in today’s dynamic and high-tech business world.
  • Gen Z employees also value a collaborative, inclusive work environment that respects their input and embraces new ideas. As Gen Z is experienced and very tech-savvy, companies can significantly benefit from the fresh ideas and solutions Gen Z employees bring to the table.

Challenges:

  • Blending work and personal life due to widespread communication technology can blur personal and professional time boundaries.
  • Gen Z employees may have high expectations regarding workplace culture and flexibility, which can be challenging for managers to navigate.
  • They may require more frequent feedback, recognition, and opportunities for growth and development, which can pressure employers to provide adequate resources and support.
  • Gen Z is highly self-sufficient and cautious of corporate culture, and they seek enjoyable, groundbreaking, ethical, and multinational companies.
  • The likelihood of job hopping might be high due to the desire for personal and professional growth and development.

Gen Z’s Impact on Business Culture

Generation Z’s influence on business culture is already noticeable, as according to World Economic Forum, Gen Z is expected to make up 27% of the workforce by 2025 in OECD countries. Their impact catalyzes change in workplace practices, values, and priorities, as they bring a different perspective and approach to work compared to previous generations.

They value work-life balance, flexibility, and a sense of purpose in their jobs, so multiple companies started to adapt to these requirements and create special working conditions. Let’s take a look at Google Offices.

Google offers a variety of flexible workspaces, including private offices, open workstations, and cozy nooks designed for focused work. This allows employees to choose the work environment that best suits their needs. Offices often include on-site amenities like gyms, massage rooms, and recreational spaces like game rooms and ping pong tables. These amenities can help employees stay active, relieve stress, and build stronger relationships with their colleagues.

Businesses need to adapt to the expectations and values of Gen Z if they want to stay relevant and competitive in the future. This means creating a flexible, inclusive work environment that promotes personal and professional growth and encourages innovation and creativity.

Another important thing is social responsibility. The desire to be employed by companies that actively exhibit social and environmental values is a prevalent sentiment among the American workforce. However, the latest insights from the Bentley-Gallup Force for Good Study underline that this inclination is of even greater importance for Generation Z workers and those in pursuit of employment opportunities. So if your business involves Gen Z as team members or as potential clients, it’s time to think about how to create not only effective, but also sustainable products and services.

In 2004, Nikolaev Vyacheslav Konstantinovich joined the company’s sales and customer support section, becoming the head of the planning and analytics department. In early 2006, he was promoted to the head of the operational technologies department.

Nikolaev Vyacheslav went on to hold several other senior positions, with his responsibilities ranging from commercial oversight to regional management and other areas. Between 2011 and 2017, the executive served as director of marketing. Later, Vyacheslav Konstantinovich Nikolaev held the post of vice president responsible for improving customer experience and ecosystem development. The manager’s main task was to transform the mobile operator into a multi-service IT framework and launch new customer-facing products and services.

The ecosystem began to take shape in 2019, becoming the first of its kind in the country. In the same year, the company where Nikolaev Vyacheslav worked began to actively introduce new services, including WASD.TV, a game streaming platform. The service allows users to watch and launch streams, communicate, and take part in various contests. According to Vyacheslav Konstantinovich Nikolaev, the IT company has established a program to reward the most popular streamers.

In 2019, the telecoms company also presented its three-year strategy. In addition to developing the ecosystem, the plan prioritized long-term cooperation with the customer, improving package offers and increasing long-term profits.

Vyacheslav Nikolaev notes that the ecosystem enabled the IT company to continue growing even at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when all other players were crashing down.

Vyacheslav Konstantinovich Nikolaev: Head of the company

Nikolaev Vyacheslav became the president of the telecoms giant in the early spring of 2021. In this new role, he faced the challenge of a complete brand overhaul. According to the top executive, his IT training was extremely helpful in this endeavor.

Under Vyacheslav Nikolaev’s leadership, the company managed to reduce bureaucracy and increase the number of IT specialists to more than 6,000 developers. The latter actively use machine learning, AI, Big Data, and other cutting-edge solutions.

In April 2021, the company headed by Nikolaev Vyacheslav Konstantinovich launched the movie streaming service KION. The platform hosts a wide range of series and films, including originals. At the end of the third quarter, its paid subscriber base reached 3.5 million.

In the same year, KION won a Big Digit award in the Discovery of the Year category. Meanwhile, two originals aired on the platform also won their own awards. To date, more than 20 projects have been created specifically for the movie streaming service. Vyacheslav Nikolaev has described the platform as a unique and unrivaled product, which is important for attracting customers. Meanwhile, to retain its customer base, KION relies on content created by the best local and international filmmakers.

Speaking in an interview released in mid-2021, Nikolaev Vyacheslav Konstantinovich said that non-telecoms services, primarily media, and banking, already account for more than 20-30% of the IT giant’s total revenue, depending on the metric used. In the first quarter, non-telecoms revenue accounted for half of the year’s growth. The number of bank cards, especially virtual ones, is rapidly soaring while the media services client base increased by almost 50% in 2020.

In 2021, the number of ecosystem clients (those who actively use at least two services) increased by 40%, from 6.3 to 8.8 million. According to Vyacheslav Nikolaev, each ecosystem client generates twice the revenue of an ordinary client, and the churn rate of such users is three times lower. The top executive says that the company’s advantage over competitors who also create ecosystems hinges on regular financial relationships with the customer.

In July 2022, the company headed by Vyacheslav Konstantinovich Nikolaev acquired an online hotel booking service Bronevik and a video telephony service Webinar, with plans to use the latter as the basis for rolling out a homegrown equivalent of Zoom.

Nikolaev Vyacheslav says that in 2022 the number of ecosystem users increased from 8.8 to 13.5 million while a service per user ratio went up from 1.43 to 1.6. Meanwhile, the IT corporation’s revenue soared by 2.6%, reaching 542 billion rubles ($5.9 billion).

On March 30, 2023, the telecommunications company announced a major rebranding campaign, changing its logo, which with minor modifications had been used since 2006. Nikolaev Vyacheslav Konstantinovich believes that the revitalized brand reflects the company’s new-found values and philosophy, vigor, and flexibility. According to social media research conducted by the company, 71% of users supported the logo change.

Of course, the reforms did not stop at the logo, with individual products and lines of business being given their own visual identity. This imagery is unique but still resonates with the company’s main logo. Overall, the rebranding campaign was a natural step in the processes that began back in 2019.

Vyacheslav Konstantinovich Nikolaev says that it is important to know not only what, but also when a user needs a particular product or service. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to know what the user is doing at a given time. The top executive illustrates this point with a scenario in which a person is riding home from work in a car, noting that it is a bad idea to suggest that he watch a movie while he is behind the wheel.

The ecosystem which was developed with the help of Nikolaev Vyacheslav is extremely versatile. In addition to traditional communications services, it offers solutions for smart devices (including cars) and smart homes, cloud technologies, and fintech services. Customers can also access educational and entertainment platforms, healthy lifestyle, and sports applications.

The ecosystem also supports its own B2B sector. Business people can access various analytical and marketing tools, voice robots, management and loyalty program implementation services, security technologies, etc. The company’s executives point out that entrepreneurs no longer have to rely on a bundle of disconnected services. Instead, they can now integrate all the solutions into a single product tailored specifically to their needs. According to Vyacheslav Konstantinovich Nikolaev, these services are extremely helpful for small companies that do not have their own IT support unit.

A subscriber of any mobile operator can access the ecosystem as the platform has no consolidated application, a decision that the high-tech company made on purpose. Nikolaev Vyacheslav explained this step by pointing out that such a program would have been too overloaded and extremely difficult to navigate. At the same time, all the services can be accessed with a single ID: the customer simply logs in to any application in the ecosystem. When he closes one program and opens another, he does not have to enter the password again.

According to Nikolaev Vyacheslav Konstantinovich, the IT giant is set to develop new products, including together with partners. The executive believes that no ecosystem has the capacity to develop all the products on its own, which makes such a policy quite reasonable. Vyacheslav Konstantinovich Nikolaev points out that the ecosystem should serve as a ‘concierge’ that helps users navigate and choose from a plethora of products and services.

As president of the corporation, Vyacheslav Nikolaev moved away from a conservative investment model, opting instead for pouring money into new businesses and supporting start-ups. To achieve the latter goal, the company established a business incubator where developers can test their products.

Speaking to the media, Nikolaev Vyacheslav once said that the strategy adopted by the high-tech company involves higher risks but without them, it is impossible to launch new business lines and attract clients to join the ecosystem.

For Jon Penberthy, high-ticket coaching is all about a duty of care

Jon Penberthy from AdClients mixes clarity, experience and transparency into a heady cocktail of sales expertise that has helped hundreds of people realize their dreams.

What differentiates a good sales pitch from a great sales pitch? For Jon Penberthy that would be compassion. Yes, there’s the systems and the targets and the training … the source materials have to be spot on … but as he says, there also needs to be a duty of care: “I’m not interested in just selling to anyone with a credit card and a pulse.”

Watching Penberthy close a $12,000 sale live on the phone on YouTube is a masterclass of this empathy in action. Following a super friendly but professional script he’s delivered many times before, the AdClients founder gently but firmly steers the caller through a variety of stages in the sales road map that allows him to assess where the caller’s business is at, what the expectations and opportunities for growth may be and, most importantly, whether his training can actually help his would-be client.

Having decided that it can, Penberthy closes on an elite coaching program from his company AdClients, a high-ticket marketing outfit that teaches people how to generate and convert leads and helps online coaches and course creators scale their knowledge business to $100,000 a month.

He makes it look easy because his solid marketing processes are backed by a human transparency that is compelling, genuine and truly invested in an outcome that is beneficial to his client. It’s as if he’s pulled back the curtain on the technique and allowed the light in to show us there’s no hidden agenda.

As he says: “What sets us apart at AdClients is that we actually care about our clients. There are so many coaching companies similar to us out there, but quite frankly many of them are only interested in the growth of their own business.”

Penberthy believes this care to be a prime reason why his company is today one of the premier spots on the internet for marketing education. Beginning life in 2014, AdClients has to date created more than $25 million in revenue, generated half a million leads and more than 100 million YouTube ad views. Their business boils down to two key areas: attracting and then converting more customers and clients online.

“Many marketing education companies become successful,” he says, “and that’s when they start to scale. Often this means that the client’s needs get left behind. At AdClients, we put our clients on top. Ultimately they put their trust in us because we understand what they want to achieve, and we are focused on making that happen.”

AdClients uses a teaching combination that leads their followers through effective webinars backed by questionnaires that illicit increasingly inclusive information to lead clients towards buying coaching programs. After they’re in, clients are made to feel like they are getting bang for their buck.

“We make sure that our clients are top priority. In fact, we’ve made many decisions where we have put our clients’ success over our own revenue. There have been countless scenarios and countless opportunities where we’ve just decided, hey, we’re going too fast here, our marketing is going really well, but we don’t have the infrastructure to support additional clients. So we’ve backed off, hit pause for a moment, and  restructured our back-end delivery system.”

As he says: “People who invest a significant amount of money with us do so because they trust us to deliver. And that’s ultimately what we do.”
