Meet the Dynamic Duo Whitney and Jake | An Interview with Life Coaches

People love the idea of a positive change! Be it a confident move of explaining that eureka moment at work or celebrating small improvements during irksome phases, small differences change the way you outgrow big challenges. And not to sound too poetic, but clearing the stumbling blocks in your mind and soul is synonymous with living the ultimate life!

So, with so many people talking about transformational experiences and life coaching, I sat for an interview with the dynamic duo and life coaches, Jake and Whitney. Known for some powerful choices, the couple picks their inspirations from the past to navigate clients towards better living.

Whitney has successfully lost 40 pounds, has bid goodbyes to excessive drinking, and has outgrown the challenges of being a stepmom. Jake is a teacher with 20 years of experience as a master educator and certified in 2 states. The duo has been helping clients to recognize what has been cocooned inside them for a long time. Well, there is a lot more to know about these two! So, here we are, unfurling some profound insights about their world of coaching. Feeling stuck in the grey area? Whitney and Jake know how to get things done right!

Q1) Looks like you have knitted your inspirations from past experiences. Please take us through some of your inspirations that encouraged you to become a life coach.

Our introduction to the world of life coaching was Brooke Castillo. Whitney had been listening to her podcast before we met, and I started listening as we began dating. I ended up using her podcast The Life Coach School Podcast as a means to propose to Whitney, and it seems like our three lives have been intertwined ever since.

Whit and I were getting coaching from Brooke to grow our fitness business, and as she started to know us better, she kept saying, “When are you two going to open a coaching business and start changing lives full time?” We laughed at first, but then we started to really consider it. Then we did it!

As I’ve learned more about this life coaching world, I am really grateful that Brooke was our entry point. There are a lot of different coaching styles and philosophies out there, but the training we received from Brooke has us positioned in a place that makes me feel confident we deliver a top-end product!

Q2) We have seen some reluctance in people to approach a life coach. So what do you think is an answer for such situations?

In our experience, this reluctance has three sources.

  1. “I think life coaches are for people who don’t know how to do life.” The truth is that a life coach is similar to an athletic coach. They are on the sideline so they can see adjustments that are difficult to see from “the field” When a client comes to us with a struggle, we are trained to hold space for them—meaning we can talk about the ins and outs of their situation without getting wrapped up in the stories and the familiar patterns that have lead them here. A life coach offers perspective and a fresh set of eyes.

Having a life coach means you’re bad at life about as much as having a basketball coach means LeBron James is bad at basketball.

       2.  “I think I can just do it on my own.” We think you can too! It’s just faster and more efficient with a coach. And double that with two coaches. A life coach meets you on the path you’re already on and helps you navigate it faster. A coach is to go from good to great rather than broken to healthy.

       3. “I don’t trust just anyone to mess with my belief structure.” This is a really important one and the reason that Jake and I are so vulnerable about our Christian faith in our marketing. We want you to know who we are and what we believe, so you can love your choice, have an open hand with your view of the world, and be willing to try on unfamiliar perspectives.

Q3) What kind of strategies do you find most effective in your sessions?

Whit asks powerful questions that expose default thinking and limiting beliefs while Jake quietly observes and tracks your thinking until your patterns, stories, and limiting beliefs emerge. The greatest value we can offer is to not believe the same stuff that the client believes. If we agree with your excuses, then all three of us are stuck! We offer distance and awareness to allow you to evaluate your assumptions about your limitations and make the shift in your thinking that will move the needle. We’ve found this to be orders of magnitude more effective than simply offering advice about new actions to take.

Q4) So as Jake and Whitney are life coaches that transform lives together as a team, are there times when your approaches repel? How do you manage to harmonize them?

We have enough “behind the curtain” communication that we don’t “repel,” but we do have different perspectives often! We have learned that the effort we put into our own artistry and mastery of this unique characteristic of our coaching style can make it an unbelievable value to the client’s experience. Our main adjustment in harmonizing is to assign roles. Whitney is the head coach and Jake is the assistant coach—we have meetings, get feedback from clients, and even watch videos, like athletes, to refine our roles and make sure we know how we can enhance what the other is bringing to the table.

Q5) What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who is just starting out and aspires to become a life coach?

Get a coach! We both have coaches, and we always will. A coach is not ahead of you, or better than you, or someone with all the answers. A coach is someone who is watching from the sideline so they see things that you don’t see. We like to say that we always want to have “eyes on our brain.” If someone aspires to be a coach, they’ll want to make sure they are clear on the value of having a coach. In my experience, the best way to gain that clarity is to experience it.

The 3 Critical Pillars to Building a Sustainable, Scalable Business

From the desk of Kamahl Simon, one of our top 10 coaches to watch out for in 2021.

It’s been said that the space shuttle uses up to 70% of its fuel lifting just 3 feet off the platform, and over 90% by the time it reaches orbit. Once in orbit though, its trajectory can be shifted with the lightest touch.

Building a business is the same. In fact, around 70% of small businesses burn through all of their resources before the end of year 1, and over 90% never make it to orbit (that elusive 5-year mark). Over 90% of these businesses are complex, get micromanaged, and stagnate quickly.

So what is different about those that make it?

A sustainable and scalable business (i.e., not a bought job that you’re tied to for life), cycles around 3 key pillars: simplify, automate, and replicate.

The problem that the 90% have is that they try to grow rapidly and create automations, or “systems” well before the business is ready. What appears simple to the business owner is in fact complicated to onlookers. If you’ve ever thought that it’s hard to find “decent” workers, then this is absolutely happening in your business.

Systems help run efficiency, but more often than not, most business systems were built when the business owner was doing all the work—essentially creating an efficient inefficiency.

The classic example of this is that folder of great systems you wrote sitting on the bookshelf right now collecting dust. Ask your team, “Who here knows where the systems are?” and every hand will go up. Then ask “Who has read them all cover to cover and can implement them 100%?” and only Tony’s hand goes up (because Tony helped write the systems).

To your team, you’re like those friends who always insist on showing you every picture of their kids. They’ll politely say, “Oh, how beautiful,” but really they’re thinking, “Did I remember to put the dishwasher on?”

Efficient inefficiency is a problem because it hinders the second pillar, automate, from being implementable… and this flow on means that the final pillar, replicate, is impossible to use to scale growth.

So instead of simplify, automate, replicate, we have complex, micromanage, and stagnate.

All because the business owner was overworked, spinning all the plates and decided he needed to offload some of the tasks to free his time.

Great thinking, poor execution.

The good news is that the fix is very simple. It’s not easy, as it will take an undoing of how most business owners think, but it is simple.

It is critically important that we look at the pillars and their component parts in order. We must light the engines before we attempt takeoff.

To do this, focus first on the “simplify” pillar. Specifically, look to simplify the way you attract new prospects, then how you convert them into clients, then finally, simplify the way in which you deliver your products or services (your client experience).

Attract, convert, deliver—in that order.

Next, you may start to look at “automate” as a pillar of focus. The 3 key areas (again, in order) are what we call “systems flow,” where each system has a 1-page maximum design and flows effortlessly into the next. After systems flow, we concentrate on building out the “toolbox.” Adding any new tools that will enhance the systems, and more importantly, removing all of the tools that no longer serve us. Finally, we implement “plug and play,” where any new system can be plugged into the business and its uptake is instant and effective—like how Apple computers were designed to work right out of the box, no assembly required.

Systems flow, build your toolbox, plug and play.

This is the foundation of automation, which now means your business can start exponential growth without you having to now work 26 hours a day, 8 days a week. In fact, the average business owner we put through this process grows over 220% and drops down to 2-3 days per week in the business.

Finally, it’s time to replicate the sustainable scaling of your business.

The problem with scaling too early is that the business owner ends up having to micro-manage and stress exponentially with their growth, doing the work of many of their paid audience, I mean, staff.

The focus for this pillar first falls into “proof of concept.” Taking the automations and testing their plug and play abilities, one at a time, until they can truly operate without you. Don’t rush this; rework every system 20 times if you must because your sustainable growth depends critically on this step.

The second phase of your “replicate” pillar is leverage points, whereby you can have 1 conversation that leverages your message to 10, 100, or 1,000 people, communicating with efficiency and scale. This is for your team, for your clients, and has a huge flow on its effect into your marketing channel—attract.

Finally, with everything else in place, it’s time to build your championship team. Yes, the team comes last (I told you you’d have to think differently).

We create an environment of excellence before bringing the top players in. If you bring in the big guns, but your environment doesn’t support them in an epic way, then they won’t stay for long and you’ll find yourself working even harder with recruitment, training, and wondering what the hell keeps going wrong.

Proof of concept, leverage Points, championship team.

Three pillars—each with 3 focus points—that, when executed in order with patience and diligence, will all but guarantee long term, sustainable success in your business.

Once that’s done, your business is well and truly in orbit, and making changes will take the lightest of touches.

It takes a lot of work to build out this foundation. Seventy percent of your fuel to get just 3 feet off the platform. Of course, this does pose 1 obvious question though…

Why don’t they just build the platform 3 feet higher?

How Rising Artist East Atlanta Montana Turned His Back on a Life of Delinquency to Pursue a Music Career

It can be challenging to raise a child in some of the roughest areas of a neighborhood, but raising four children is more than exhausting for single parents. East Atlanta Montana is a rising artist from Atlanta, Georgia, who grew up under the guidance of his mother, a single mom who worked hard to ensure that he and his siblings would be raised right. Although the artist encountered some problems, he has been making the most of his second chance in life by building a career in the music industry.

East Atlanta Montana is the oldest of four children who grew up in an area known as Zone 6, which earned a reputation as one of the most dangerous places in the city. Upon realizing how the site could affect her children, Montana’s mother decided to take them out and move to a better area, hoping they could avoid falling into the wrong crowd. Despite her attempts, Montana would find himself struggling to stay out of trouble. Throughout his teenage years, the would-be artist got himself involved in gangs and got into fights at school. He would go in and out of detention centers and eventually found himself on house arrest.

During that time, Montana would use his laptop to record music, using his hobby as an outlet to escape his problems. Although it helped him cope, Montana would fall back into delinquency. Eventually, he was forced to participate in a military program. For six months, Montana endured the training and came back with the determination to turn his life around. He started his journey by forming a musical group called Gwalla Boyz.

In a short time, the group started to pick up traction throughout Atlanta. Labels reached out to them and offered management, but due to the number of members in the group, they could not come to an agreement. The Gwalla Boyz split up instead. However, East Atlanta Montana was determined to build a career in the music industry. His brother Mario, who happened to be a CEO and manager, joined him to throw parties in the area and grow his brand. Throughout their endeavors, the brothers made connections with artists, propelling them into the music industry.

Among their connections is Coca Vango, a musical artist and good friend of Montanas. Collaborating with Lil Quill, they released a track called “She Poppin’.” The song generated a lot of buzz for the rising artist, and he pursued another project with ArmaunDidIt, a high school friend and producer. Bringing Coca Vango once more, Montana recorded a track titled “7,” dedicating it to his grandmother, who had a habit with 777 as her lucky number.

For over ten years, East Atlanta Montana has dedicated himself to his music. Since turning his life around, the rising artist has gone from sleeping in his car and crashing on his friends’ couch to becoming a household name and getting booked for paid shows with artists from different states and countries. Montana is now determined to continue his career to create his own record label, where he can mentor artists, producers, engineers and cameramen to help his community. Additionally, the artist foresees running a family business that he hopes to name after his grandmother.
