AMA Animal Rescue: A Source of Hope for Abandoned Animals

Located within the heart of New York City, AMA Animal Rescue also known as Angels for Mistreated Animals (AMA), is one of the fastest-growing and top rated nonprofit animal rescue organizations in New York. Over the years, they have rescued hundreds of companion animals who have suffered severe abuse, neglect, and abandonment.

Founded in 2014, by two immigrant friends, Anna Khazanova and Mariya Vlasova, AMA Animal Rescue emerged from humble beginnings but quickly evolved into one of the fastest-growing rescue organizations in the state. United by their shared love for animals and fueled by a desire to make a difference, Anna from Ukraine and Mariya from Russia, started a journey that would touch the lives of countless abandoned and neglected companion animals.

Their story began with a simple realization: despite the absence of roaming dogs in America compared to their native countries, there existed city animal shelters where countless animals awaited their fate. Determined to help, Anna and Mariya initiated efforts, organizing fundraisers among friends and hosting bake sales to generate funds for toys, treats, and necessities for shelter animals.

However, it was a personal experience that truly sparked their passion. During their visits, Anna grew deeply attached to a pitbull type dog and persuaded her family to adopt him. However, upon finally obtaining their agreement, the dog had mysteriously vanished. This instance opened their eyes to the harsh reality of the shelter system. Learning about the staggering number of pets euthanized monthly across the country propelled them into action. With little experience but limitless determination, they set out to make a difference.

AMA Animal Rescue quickly evolved to focus on rescuing animals that have endured severe abuse, neglect, and abandonment, recognizing the need for intervention for these vulnerable animals. Despite the financial challenges—cases often incurring costs ranging from $5000 to $30,000—Anna and Mariya, with the support of a growing community, spared no effort in saving lives.

Initially a two-woman operation, AMA Animal Rescue expanded its reach, establishing a physical location in Brooklyn, New York, where over 100 volunteers dedicate their time to caring for the animals awaiting their forever homes. The organization’s commitment to education and community involvement led to collaborations with local schools and the creation of programs like “Recipe for Hope,” engaging young animal enthusiasts in fundraising efforts.

But AMA’s impact doesn’t stop there. Through partnerships with like-minded companies such as Subaru, Earth Breeze, 1% for the Planet, and Earth Rated, Anna and Mariya strive to expand their reach and provide even greater support for animals in need. Their vision for the future includes establishing a larger facility with medical staff and enhanced enrichment programs, all aimed at saving more lives and fostering a deeper connection between humans and animals.

As AMA Animal Rescue continues to grow and thrive, it serves as a hope for abandoned animals. Through their tireless efforts, Anna and Mariya have not only changed the lives of countless animals but have inspired a movement dedicated to creating a brighter, more compassionate world for all beings.

People have the opportunity to engage by volunteering at the shelter, fostering animals, joining AMA’s community outreach efforts, keeping up with their social media channels, and contributing donations here.
