After moving to the U.S., I completed my Master of Science in Technology with a focus on Project Management and Quality Management Analytics at Illinois State University. This advanced degree not only honed my project management skills but also provided a solid grounding in data analytics, which I now apply in my role as a Cost Analyst at Starlux.
Interviewer: Your work at Starlux Corporation involves significant cost analysis and strategic planning. Can you elaborate on the challenges you face in this role?
Bing Fang: One of the main challenges is navigating the complex financial and operational landscapes in the plastics recycling industry. We deal with currency risks, market fluctuations, and the need to optimize procurement efficiency while maintaining cost-effectiveness. This requires a deep understanding of quantitative models, such as time series analysis and multiple-regression analysis, to forecast trends and make informed decisions. Additionally, the international aspect of our business, especially in managing relationships with Chinese suppliers, adds another layer of complexity, which makes my work both challenging and rewarding.
Interviewer: Starlux Corporation has several innovative projects, such as the “NextGen Recycled PVC Sheet Program” and “Nature Relax” home textiles. How do you contribute to these initiatives as a Cost Analyst?
Bing Fang: I play a critical role in providing cost information and operations analysis, which is key to the success of these innovative projects. For instance, in the “NextGen Recycled PVC Sheet Program,” my analysis helps in identifying procurement patterns that optimize our cost savings, especially given the long turnaround times and market risks. Similarly, in the “Nature Relax” brand, I work closely with the purchasing department to ensure that the cost-effectiveness of the materials, like recycled PET bottles, aligns with our sustainability goals and profit margins. It’s exciting to be a part of projects that have both environmental and economic impact.
Interviewer: What advice would you give to young professionals aspiring to work in cost analysis or the broader field of data-driven decision-making?
Bing Fang: I would encourage young professionals to continuously develop their analytical skills,
particularly in areas like SQL, Python, and project management methodologies. It’s also important to stay adaptable and open to learning new tools and techniques, as the field of data analysis is ever-evolving. Moreover, having a solid grasp of the business context and being able to communicate complex data insights in a clear, actionable way is crucial. Lastly, never underestimate the power of teamwork—collaborating with cross-functional teams is a big part of success in cost analysis.
Interviewer: Looking ahead, what are your future goals and aspirations at Starlux and in your career?
Bing Fang: My immediate goal is to continue contributing to Starlux’s innovative projects and helping the company achieve its sustainability and profitability objectives. In the long term, I aspire to take on more leadership roles within the company, particularly in strategic planning and global operations. I am also passionate about further integrating advanced data analytics and financial modeling into our decision-making processes, especially as we expand our projects in recycling and sustainable materials. Personally, I want to continue learning and growing in the field, perhaps even pursuing certifications in advanced analytics or financial management to deepen my expertise. Ultimately, my goal is to play a pivotal role in driving Starlux’s mission of sustainability and innovation forward, while making a positive impact on the industry as a whole.
