For anyone living with drug addiction problems, getting the help you need is key. That usually revolves around going to rehab.
Now, often, rehab gets painted in a bad light. The media, TV, and film portray it in perhaps a light it shouldn’t be, and typically, people do have a somewhat different perception of drug rehab than actually what it is.
In truth, drug rehab is an environment that provides structure, expertise, care, comfort, and more to give people the chance to enter recovery and have the tools to avoid the risks of relapse. So, while you may be nervous or reluctant about going to rehab, you shouldn’t be.
The question is, then, what can you expect in drug rehab? To help you, here’s a guide to a day in the life.
Morning: Getting the day started
Mornings typically start early, aiming to help develop a healthy routine they can take into their everyday life. The morning is lovely and structured, and it involves a wake-up call and a nutritious breakfast to help set people up. Having a healthy breakfast is essential, restoring energy that can help support physical health and recovery.
Moving into the morning, you’ll go through morning meditation and exercises such as yoga or lighter forms like jogging or walking. This can help clear the mind at the beginning of the day, ready for therapy later. Some centers may also have goal-setting sessions, which can help promote focus and accountability.
Mid-Morning: Therapy and Counselling
Moving into mid-morning is when the counseling and therapy start. These are tailored to each person, from one-on-one sessions to group activities and educational workshops.
The aim is to delve into the underlying causes of addiction, as well as understand triggers, develop coping mechanisms, and get support from others. It’s all about finding the root causes, managing more healthily, and getting the support you need on your journey to sobriety.
Afternoon: Skill-Building and Self-Reflection
After a healthy lunch, afternoons are generally dedicated to activities that promote personal growth and practical skills.
Life skills training often takes place, exploring the likes of budgeting, cooking, time management, and other skills that promote independence. At the same time, many centers also provide holistic therapies such as art and music therapy to build confidence and find a way to express themselves more creatively.
Recreational activities also occur during the afternoons, with sports, games, and outdoor walks often promoted, allowing people to relax and develop healthy habits.
Evening: Reflection and Preparation
As the evening sets in, it’s all about reflecting on the day and winding down. Support groups and 12-step meetings take place, providing guidance and solidarity while reinforcing the importance of accountability.
Dinner is often served in a communal setting, allowing for further social time with other patients in rehab, which offers a great way to build relationships, remove any feelings of isolation, and develop solid bonds of support.
The day always finishes with relaxation and a structured bedtime routine, which helps promote a night of restful sleep and a daily structure that will help you through rehab treatment and recovery.
