Few individuals in the world of sports have left as diversified a mark as Hernando L. Planells (Coach H). From orchestrating plays on the court, choreographing movie sequences, to elucidating the nuances of Filipino culture on a digital platform, Coach H stands out as a multi-faceted talent.

A Melting Pot of Heritage
Born in Los Angeles, Coach H carries the vibrant tapestry of his heritage with pride. His mother, Carmen Waga-Pangan, hails from Cagayan de Oro, Philippines, and his father, Hernando Sr., from Colombia. This unique blend of cultures not only shaped his upbringing but also influenced his later work, especially in the realm of media and sports.

An Illustrious Coaching Career
Basketball fans may recognize Planells from his successful stints with the women’s basketball programs at Duke University where they won an ACC Championship and appeared in two Elie 8’s and at William Jessup University where he led the WArriors to their very first GSAC Championship and was named Coach of the Year..

But they may truly recognize Coach Has he just finished coaching SlamBall.  SlamBall is a hybrid sport combining elements from basketball, football, hockey, and gymnastics and was aired on ESPN.  Coach H led the BUZZSAW to a third place finish.

With an experience spanning across high school, college, and professional ranks, he has truly seen and shaped it all.

Coaching has taken him all over the world. From time with the Maine Red Claws in the NBA Development League to Japan as the head coach of the Ryukyu Golden Kings as well as a three year successful stint with Basketball New Zealand in their National Team system.

His discerning eye for talent is apparent not only on the court but off it as well. Between 2005 and 2010, Planells undertook the crucial role of a scout under Marty Blake, the NBA’s Director of Scouting. During this period, he evaluated NBA hopefuls, creating reports that would ultimately land on the tables of NBA’s top brass.

However, basketball is just one part of the dynamic life of Planells. His show, “Paano to Pinoy,” aired on Myx Global Youtube channel, blends cultural insights with light-hearted humor. Centered around Hernando and his two children,  Preston and Gabby, the show navigates the intricacies of Pinoy life through a series of reality challenges.
