Originally a fire station dating back to the 1920s, the Kodō Hotel and its adjoining Kodō Restaurant offer guests a peaceful escape from a city often defined by its hustle and bustle. Located in the Arts District of Los Angeles, the Kodō hotel representsp the eitome of luxury living in one of LA’s unique neighborhoods. Maintaining respect for Japanese traditions while holding true to their commitment to hospitality, Kodō offers a one-of-a-kind getaway where wellness and cultural immersion converge. Inspired by the Japanese concept of omentanashi, which prioritizes care over expectation, interior designers Jen Whitaker and Emi Kitawaki worked with architect Matt Royce to strip away ostentation and focus on deliberate design elements that cultivate a sense of serenity.
When guests first step into the Kodō Hotel, they are enveloped in an atmosphere of understated elegance. The lobby, adorned with purposeful decorations bathed in soft, indirect lighting, sets the tone for the entire experience. Here, the concept of negative space is embraced, inviting visitors to take a moment out of their busy lives to pause and reflect. The hotel features eight ryokan-style rooms, each a getaway of its own. Taking inspiration from the natural elements, these rooms offer a combination of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern comforts. King-sized futon-style beds, custom-made concrete sinks, and open showers are just a handful of the several unique minimalist design elements set to impress at the Kodō Hotel. Notably, one of the striking features of the rooms is the bathroom – where the sink and shower take center stage. Encased in striking black stone, these statement pieces emanate both boldness and beauty. The open design, while unconventional, adds a sense of airiness to the space, creating an ambiance reminiscent of an outdoor shower. Even beyond its stylish accommodations, guests have access to a variety of dining, entertainment, and shopping options while staying at the Kodō hotel. Its location in the Arts District makes it a magnet for stylish vacationers and high-end business travelers alike.

Adjacent to the hotel, the Kodō Restaurant beckons visitors with its inviting atmosphere. The eatery seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor spaces, offering guests an immersive dining experience. The menu, curated to reflect the spirit of the hotel, showcases a fusion of Japanese and California cuisine, with dishes like the exclusive Sea Bass Ceviche and a wide selection of omakase and sushi offerings featured on the extensive list. Led by the visionary Los Angeles native Chef Alex Suzuki, the menu at Kodō pays homage to tradition while embracing creativity and playfulness. One of Chef Suzuki’s favorite dishes to create is the Ponzu Oyster, featuring plump oysters topped with grated daikon radish, tokyo negi, and house ponzu for a refreshing burst of flavor. Other guest favorites include the Sesame Yellowtail Kingfish, where succulent yellowtail is elevated with house chili crunch, sesame sauce, and delicate sesame flakes, as well as classic sushi staples like Toro, Maguro, and Uni. At the center of the restaurant is a custom-built, live-edge pine table that serves as a communal gathering place. Surrounded by benches that double as pedestals for art and culinary creations, this table embodies that spirit of impermanence inherent in Japanese aesthetics. Whether dining al fresco on the outdoor patio or gathering in the secluded private dining room, guests are treated to an immersive dining experience that they will never forget. In Chef Suzuki’s hands, the Kodō Restaurant becomes a commemoration of culinary innovation; for diners seeking a unique and memorable meal, Kodō reflects the culinary excellence of LA’s diverse Arts District.
In Los Angeles, where wellness has become closely associated with consumerism, the Kodō Hotel and Restaurant offer a refreshing alternative where guests can escape for a moment from their busy day-to-day lives. At Kodō, the pursuit of tranquility is more than just a commodity – it is a way of life based on the wisdom of Japanese culture. Regardless of whether guests are embarking on a solo journey of self-discovery or sharing a romantic getaway with a loved one, the Kodō Hotel and Restaurant offer safe spaces where every detail has been carefully preserved to ensure a memorable experience.
