Exploring America’s Heart: Shari Leid’s 50 States Project

By: PR Fueled

In contemporary America, the pervasive issues of division and disconnection have become defining features of our cultural landscape. Political polarization, social fragmentation, and economic inequality have eroded the sense of unity and common purpose that once characterized our nation. The widening gap between different segments of society has led to increased distrust, animosity, and tribalism, further deepening the divides that separate us.

This climate of division not only hampers our ability to address pressing challenges such as climate change, racial injustice, and economic inequality but also undermines the very fabric of our democracy. Moreover, the prevalence of social media and digital technologies has exacerbated feelings of isolation and alienation, replacing meaningful human interaction with shallow online connections.

As a result, our culture has become increasingly fragmented, with individuals retreating into echo chambers of like-minded peers, further entrenching their own perspectives while demonizing those who disagree. Ultimately, the culture of division and disconnection in America threatens to erode the values of empathy, compassion, and solidarity that are essential for a thriving and cohesive society.

Shari Leid tackled the problem of division and disconnection in America head-on through her 50 states project. By engaging in intentional conversations with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, Shari helped foster understanding, empathy, and connection. Through her mission to sit down with one woman in each state and learn about their lives, communities, and experiences, Shari broke down barriers and built bridges between people. Her approach highlighted the power of genuine human connection to transcend differences and unite us in our shared humanity, offering a beacon of hope in a divided world.

Shari, former litigator turned empowering life coach, embarked on a remarkable journey aimed at bridging the gaps and fostering genuine connections across the United States. Through her ambitious 50 states project which concluded in 2023, Shari set out to showcase the transformative power of sharing a meal with a stranger—a simple yet profound act that has the potential to combat loneliness, deepen relationships, and unite communities.

The Inspiration Behind the Project

For Shari, the seeds of the 50 states project were sown amidst the backdrop of political turmoil and social isolation that characterized much of the past six years. Witnessing the country become increasingly divided and personal communities shrink during the pandemic, Shari felt compelled to take action. Driven by a desire to challenge her own preconceived notions and gain a better understanding of the diverse tapestry of American life, she resolved not to let another year pass without making her dream of visiting all 50 states a reality.

A Mission of Connection and Understanding

At the heart of Shari’s mission lies a simple yet powerful belief: that friendship and connection can blossom if we take the first step and lead with curiosity. Through her travels, Shari aims to sit down with one woman in each state, engaging in meaningful conversations that delve into the fabric of their lives, families, and communities. From the stories that shaped their journeys to their perspectives on aging, motherhood, relationships, careers, and beyond, Shari seeks to uncover the essence of each individual’s experience.

“I aim to learn the story that brought each woman to her current state of residence,” Shari explained. “I want to learn about the community that she has created, her thoughts on aging, motherhood, relationships, careers, and any pivotal life experiences that she is comfortable discussing and wishes to share.”

But Shari’s curiosity extended beyond surface-level inquiries. She became equally interested in understanding the underlying motivations behind each woman’s beliefs and choices. “I’m curious about religion and politics—not what her beliefs are—but why she believes what she believes,” Shari added. “Does she believe the same as her parents? I’m also curious to learn about her definition of ‘friend’ and why she agreed to meet with me, a ‘stranger.'”

Challenging Perceptions and Embracing Differences

As Shari crisscrossed the country, her goal was twofold: to gain a deeper understanding of friendships, community, and aging, and to challenge her own preconceived ideas about different parts of the United States and the people who call them home. By engaging in intentional conversations with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, Shari hopes her journey demonstrates how easy it is to connect with those who are different from ourselves and to highlight the common threads that bind us together as Americans.

“My goal is to encourage women to sit down with someone they normally would not engage with and have intentional conversations to get to know and understand one another,” Shari explains. “We are a country that is made up of citizens who have stopped listening to each other, and we are quick to point out our differences rather than the common threads that bind us. Let’s hear each other’s stories—and find that despite our perceived differences, we are more connected than divided.”

A Journey of Discovery and Unity, and Upcoming Book

Her 50 states project serves as a testament to the power of human connection and the resilience of the American spirit. She is all set to release a book covering her journey and experiences, which is set to be released in February 2025. Through her unwavering commitment to fostering understanding and empathy, Shari not only built bridges between individuals but also strengthened the fabric of our nation. In a world marked by division and discord, her journey offers a glimmer of hope—a reminder that, despite our differences, we are united by our shared humanity.
