Bessie Lee-Cappell: How Motherhood Made Her an Entrepreneur

Welcoming a child into this world is a beautiful thing. Parenthood comes with many heartwarming experiences, but it also comes with many challenges. What people do not often see is the amount of work that goes into raising a child. And for parents who lead full and busy lives, tools that make child-rearing a little easier have become household essentials. Being a parent herself, Bessie Lee-Cappell started a company to help new parents in this chapter of their lives.

Bessie Lee-Cappell is the founder and owner of Baby Bottle Brush Bib Company. She started this company in response to the frustration she experienced upon not finding suitable teething aids for her youngest child. “As I first introduced my son to baby food, I found myself washing his cloth pacifier clips every few minutes. I looked for alternatives, but all I could find was beaded pacifier clips. I didn’t want to use that since beads could be a choking hazard. I also felt that I could not properly sanitize the string that held the beads together,” Bessie shares.

The way Bessie Lee-Cappell saw it, she was looking for a pacifier clip that was easy to clean, posed no choking hazard, and could withstand repeated biting as the baby grows. This paved the way for the creation of the Pacifier Teether Clip. As a parent who is very conscious of the products she introduces into her children’s lives, Bessie made sure that this Pacifier Teether Clip is FDA-approved, BPA-Free, and eco-friendly. It is made with 100% silicone to reduce thrush and bacteria growth, it doubles as a teether, and it can be used even as babies develop into toddlers. Bessie shares, “This all-in-one teether really helped my son and made me worry less. It made parenting a little easier, and I wanted to help other parents as well.”

Another unglamorous but all too real part of being parents is all the cleaning they have to do. This is all done to protect the child from any disease-carrying organism that may get onto their things. Another Bessie Lee-Cappell invention is the Brush Bib, a silicone barrier that goes around the bottle brushes to prevent splashback as one cleans baby bottles. “Cleaning can get tiring, and I created the Brush Bib to prevent additional messes as we clean up. These things really add a bit of convenience as we navigate all the responsibilities that parenthood entails.”

Bessie Lee-Cappell is a mother of three and an entrepreneur. Growing up, Bessie never thought she would start her own company, even though she was constantly told that she was special. “I never really understood why they kept telling me that until I created my first baby product,” the entrepreneur shares. Bessie was always driven to beat the odds stacked against her, and she did exactly that. She was the first one of her siblings to graduate high school, then college and graduate school. She is the only one in her family to receive a license in her profession. Aside from running a company, Bessie also works as a licensed social worker in Philadelphia.

Bessie Lee-Cappell wears many hats and has many roles. Bessie is an entrepreneur, an inventor, and a social worker. But first and foremost, she is a mother. She shares, “As a parent, I look at all the safety and health features when I purchase products for my children. I hope that my company will not only raise similar awareness and consciousness in other parents but also help them find little ways that make parenting easier.”
