The biggest German automaker is grappling with a confluence of crises, while reporting in 2023, a revenue increase by about 15%, its net profits dropped by 15% compared to the previous year. In a situation of declining profitability, the company is forced nevertheless to heavily invest in electrification, software development, and autonomous driving technologies to remain competitive.

In addition to that, due to shrinking profits and high operating costs, a hiring freeze of new employees has been introduced and even the closure of plants combined with layoffs are in discussions.

Because of high operational costs the German company is unlikely to be able to offer electric vehicles at the same attractive conditions to consumers as competitors do. The current market price for a common electric vehicle of the biggest German car brand starts at €34,000, whereas a comparable electric vehicle from the Chinese biggest EV manufacturer already imported and sold on the German market costs €28,000, a price difference of more than 20%.

Attracting New Cashflow Through the Split into Separate Entities

One strategy that could help navigate the crisis would be to break up the corporation into smaller, more agile companies, much like Siemens with its Healthcare and Energy Divisions. In 2017 the market cap of Siemens AG was €95 billion [1]. Right after Siemens spun off its healthcare and energy divisions, the sum of the market cap of all three independently operating companies increased to €215 billion in 2021, which is a growth of 126% [1]- [3]. General Electric (GE) also split its industrial, healthcare, and energy businesses into separate entities in recent years, boosting the individual companies’ valuation potential.

By splitting the biggest German car manufacturer’s numerous brands into independent publicly traded companies (AGs), each could focus on its core competencies and growth strategies and thereby individually attracting shareholders without being affected by the parent company’s crisis.

Acquisition by a Chinese Company 

Another option is an acquisition by a Chinese automaker. The Chinese automotive industry has rapidly evolved, with several companies becoming global players. A notable example is when a Chinese company acquired a well-known Swedish brand in 2010, allowing the Swedish company to benefit from substantial financial support and access to the booming Chinese market. Since the acquisition, the Swedish brand’s revenues have nearly tripled, reaching around $30 billion in 2022, with profit margins increasing from approx. 4% to 7%. The brand has returned as an attractive car choice on the European streets, without losing in reputation.

Moving to Cheaper Locations

Another possibility is shifting more of the company’s production capacity outside of Germany to more affordable markets. Currently, the major German car manufacturer has substantial production in countries like Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary, where labor costs are significantly lower than in Germany. According to Eurostat, the average hourly labor cost in Germany’s manufacturing sector was around €41-42 in 2022, compared to approximately €14 in Poland and €10-11 in Slovakia.

Relocating more production facilities to Eastern Europe or even Asia could help the automaker reduce costs, particularly as it shifts towards EVs, which require a fundamentally different production setup than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

Electrical power-line installers and repairers, commonly known as linemen, are some of the in-demand tradespeople today. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs in this field is projected to grow 8% from 2023 to 2033, which is faster than the average for all occupations. The median starting salary is over $85,000 annually, with the possibility to go into the six digits due to overtime pay. With electrical grids undergoing conversion to accommodate renewable energy and electric cars, there is a shortage of linemen in the industry. Power restoration efforts in areas struck by disasters such as hurricanes or tornadoes also drive demand for linemen. 

Helping fill this shortage is Linemen Institute of the North East (LINE), a pre-apprentice electrical lineman trade school based in New York. LINE offers a 500-hour pre-apprentice lineman training program that provides students with the training and certifications necessary to begin their careers as apprentice electrical lineman. Students who complete the program also receive the following qualifications: commercial driver’s license, digger truck operations, first aid & CPR, pole-top rescue, and OSHA 10-hour safety course. Since opening its doors in 2018, the Linemen Institute of the North East (LINE) has successfully graduated a significant number of students, with the majority securing employment as linemen. This high rate of employment has been credited to LINE’s adherence to an apprenticeship-style system with small class sizes, allowing instructors to pay sufficient attention to each student and aim they are adequately learning the skills they need.

LINE was established by its COO Donald Leiching, who has more than 33 years of experience as a lineman and manager. Donald shares that he had a troubled childhood and dropped out of school at 16 years old. At the age of 17, he completed his GED and joined the US Army, where he received training as a power line specialist, which corresponds to a lineman in a civilian setting. After leaving the military, Donald continued to perfect his craft within a civilian setting. Due to the freedom that comes hand in hand with this line of work, he and his wife Nanci, who is now CEO of LINE, moved around several states, including Maryland, California, Massachusetts, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut.  

Eventually, Donald and his family moved back to his hometown of Kingston, New York to become a manager at the local power company. One of his duties was overseeing hiring, and he realized that there were no institutions dedicated to training linemen in the Northeastern US. Most apprentices had to go down South to Tennessee or Georgia for their training. The energy crisis in the 1990s also led to many utility companies shutting down their apprenticeship programs, resulting in a dearth of new talent. 

Seeing the growing need for linemen, Donald decided to start LINE, with its very first class consisting of six students. Gradually expanding its staff and facilities, LINE purchased an old school building, renovating it to become its main educational facility, with the upper floors converted into a student dormitory.

The LINE program lasts for around 15 weeks and runs three times a year – in the spring, summer, and fall. When students complete the program, they can find employment as apprentice lineman, with LINE providing assistance in finding prospective employers, thanks to Donald’s extensive experience in the industry. After four to five years as an apprentice lineman, they become a journeyman, which provides a significant increase in income and the ability to find work in almost any state they want.

According to Donald, LINE plans to expand to more locations and hire more staff, as it seeks to retain its apprenticeship-based model and small class sizes – which are a major factor in the success of its graduates.

“Electricity is a necessity in modern society and it’s almost unimaginable to live without it,” Donald says. “The US electrical grid is undergoing a lot of work, whether to upgrade capacity and incorporate renewable energy or to restore hurricane-hit areas, creating a huge demand for linemen. Our students come from all walks of life, including fresh high school graduates and career shifters, seeking to land a lucrative job that pays a high salary and provides medical and retirement benefits. At Linemen Institute of the North East, we provide in-depth and practical training to give aspiring linemen the best possible start in a career where their hard work is appreciated and rewarded.”

Global Warming: Can We Stop the Unstoppable?

“Climate change is progressing at an unprecedented rate, with global temperatures accelerating 10 times faster in the past 100 years than over the previous 5,000 years. In 40 to 50 years, we may reach a point where nature crosses a threshold, making it impossible to restore a climate that’s suitable—or even habitable—for human life due to the extensive damage to Earth’s ecosystems,” says Alexander Kupershmidt, founder of the Blue Glaciers Rescue Foundation, a climate researcher, and business entrepreneur with a bachelor’s degree in physics. He challenges the widely accepted belief that human activities triggered global warming and explains that recognizing this fact would completely change the way we address it.

Interviewer: The climate has always been changing, and scientists have discussed this for years. Yes, we’ve seen record-high temperatures, but today the weather is fine. Why should we be concerned?

Alexander: The issue isn’t that the climate is changing; the issue is that it’s changing at an unprecedented and alarming rate. Since 1900s, the global temperature has increased by 1 degree Celsius (or 1.8°F), which is 10 times faster than it increased over the previous 5,000 years. Of course, a person cannot detect this insignificant change when local temperatures can vary by 20 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit in different directions throughout the year. Recently, in Los Angeles, we experienced record high temperatures of 110–115°F for several consecutive days. We might not notice if, each year, there is one extra day of heat. But within the next 30 years, there could be 30 or even more consecutive days of extreme heat. Humans may be able to adapt to 30 days of scorching temperatures, but nature and various species won’t be able to keep up with these rapid changes.

Interviewer: Many people believe that the rise in temperatures since the Industrial Revolution is due to human activities, and if we reduce CO2 emissions to net-zero by 2050, the climate should return to its previous state, correct?

Alexander: The short answer is “No.” The idea that industrial activities are the sole cause of global warming began as a hypothesis and has since evolved into a political movement. While it is now widely accepted, there is no definitive scientific study proving that human activity is the sole cause of climate change.

Interviewer: If humans aren’t the cause, what is?

Alexander: That’s the key question. A dramatic shift in climate occurred around 1910. If you look at the data, you’ll see sharp changes in global temperatures, carbon dioxide and methane concentration levels in the atmosphere, and sea levels—all of which happened simultaneously. This kind of shift can only be caused by a massive influx of energy into Earth’s climate system. Today, it is not possible to determine what events or chain of events might have occurred around 1910 that brought in that significant influx of energy, but we must understand that it was not due to human activities.

Interviewer: But why could human activities not have caused this shift in climate?

Alexander: Human activities produce extra carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that enters the atmosphere and traps heat. That’s how we affect the climate. To cause such a dramatic shift in climate in 1910, we would have had to emit as much CO2 as we have emitted up to today. However, the changes in CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere prior to this significant shift in 1910 were extremely negligible. Of course, as humans, we’re contributing to global warming with our CO2 emissions, amplifying the greenhouse effect; we are cutting down forests, polluting oceans, and amplifying the damage to Earth’s ecosystems. But we must realize that we did not start global warming, and if we didn’t start it, we cannot stop it simply by eliminating our impact.

Interviewer: Are you suggesting we won’t be able to stop global warming?

Alexander: The warming trend is a natural trend, and it will not reverse itself in our lifetimes. Nature cannot defy the laws of thermodynamics and entropy. To fight global warming, we would need to fund various geoengineering projects, such as extracting CO2 from the atmosphere or dimming radiation from the Sun. However, we do not currently have any solutions that are both safe for nature and effective for us. Therefore, we need to focus on supporting ecosystems; this would buy us time to develop the necessary technologies.

Interviewer: But we are already investing trillions in green energy and helping other countries cope with climate change, and now you are suggesting we support ecosystems. Isn’t that unrealistic?

Alexander: It may sound unrealistic, but this is a life-or-death issue for us. Glaciers, for example, are expected to melt by 50 to 75 percent from their preindustrial levels within the next 50 to 80 years. Even if we achieve net-zero CO2 emissions in 30 years, hoping that temperature and climate will return to their previous human-friendly state in another 20 to 30 years, there will be nothing—or almost nothing—to return to. And yes, we are spending trillions of dollars adapting to changes in climate, but adapting has nothing to do with finding solutions to avoid a human catastrophe. We move from one disaster to the next, whether rescuing people from floods and fires or building better housing, thinking we’ve succeeded in addressing climate change, but in reality, we have not.

Interviewer: But when everything seems to be fine, and it doesn’t feel like there is global warming, how do we start this conversation?

Alexander: It’s true—we don’t feel any changes in our day-to-day lives, and we won’t notice the severity of the problem until it’s too late. Right now, we are like boiling frogs. That’s why we must start this conversation now. We need to demand that politicians and scientists address the root causes of climate change rather than focusing solely on emissions. The clock is ticking.
