This year to celebrate International Women’s day, we were searching for someone who truly deserved to be recognized in making a REAL difference in the lives of women suffering. Our team came across A YouTube video with over 146,000 views that has been causing a serious media buzz as it highlighted the unthinkable struggles of the Rohingya refugees, especially women and children. In a 24-minute video, Samia Butt shows the world how the purchase of 10,000 hygienic sanitary pads makes a significant difference in the lives of women trapped in places where access to this lifelong necessity is almost impossible. 

Samia Butt is a leading humanitarian, social reformer, and philanthropist consistently at the forefront of giving aid to the disadvantaged and marginalized communities. Professionally, she is a full-time special education teacher working with children with special needs under the NYC Department of Education. 

She is the founding member of a non-profit organization named “Act of Goodwill,” which specializes in empowering women and helping them live life with dignity. Samia Butt was also the visionary mind behind the “Love Thy Neighbor” project, where 115 families in Mexico’s hardest and poorest areas were given groceries and financial assistance.

As most of her endeavors under the Act of Goodwill documented, one video that stands out from the rest was her visit to Rohingya refugees who have faced struggles like being victims of rape and witnessing their loved ones killed. Arriving there, she came across women with blood coming down their legs. She eventually found out through a translator that sanitary pads were seen as taboo in the community and were not accessible to these women. After seeking help from over 100 charity organizations, none provided sanitary pads as they did not see these as essential items. Determined to address this necessity, Samia’s team drove to the nearest city area and ordered 10,000 sanitary pad packets. The Rohingya women were beyond thankful and had even been asking Act of Goodwill to send them pads again. 

With the pandemic at hand, Samia Butt has undertaken endeavors for those most affected. She led the delivery of over 10,000 meal boxes to New Yorkers during the COVID-19 shutdown. Moreover, she also personally delivered hot meals to first responders in the city. On top of this, she also personally shopped for elderly families and single mothers during the lockdown. All these efforts were accomplished while she had to cope with the loss of her father last April due to the coronavirus.

A champion of inclusion and equity in the film and television industry, Evette Vargas is an inspiring and celebrated character. As a Latina writer who never quite felt she belonged, her rise to success has moved countless individuals to follow in her footsteps.

From sharing stories on the dinner table to writing for some of Hollywood’s biggest productions, Evette Vargas has come a long way.

Named by the New York Times as an “Artist to Watch,” Evette is a highly-decorated writer, director, producer, and immersive storyteller. However, her influence is not only limited to the screen and the flurry of activity behind it but its community, as well.

A first-generation Puerto Rican Latina growing up in a new environment, the young creative’s childhood was a drawn-out experience of struggling to fit in.

“I was a Latin growing up in white suburbia and eventually wanted my name to be Jenny,” she recalls. “I wasn’t white enough for my white friends, and after losing my hood accent, I wasn’t Latina enough for the Latinos.”

With hardly any friend in sight, she turned to art. “I grew up drawing, painting, writing, and dancing and my creative gifts are what got me through it and eventually what helped me find my voice and made me stand out.”

Finding herself in her newfound passion, Evette Vargas began to expand. She pursued potential in graffiti and deejaying and soon began telling awe-inducing stories at the dinner table. Soon, these stories would include her experience as a graphic and fashion design student at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).

Evette’s lauded portfolio starts with experience as a fashion designer for Calvin Klein and Donna Karen. Although her work was always exciting, she realized she wanted to take her stories beyond the dinner table. So, she studied film.

As an NYU Tisch student, Evette directed music videos, commercials, worked as an advertising director, and crafted a stunning senior thesis film that marked a brilliant career in the industry. Shortly after graduating, she became a sought-after artist in big studios such as Universal, Disney, and Sony before launching a digital production company with her husband. On it, she clasped hands with dozens of influential stars such as Madonna, Snoop Dog, and Wu-Tang Clan, to name a few.

While developing her business, Evette also grew as an award-winning creator after her digital series “Dark Prophet,” starring Henry Rollins, ended up being in contention for two Emmys in the interactive category. The road beyond that was paved with gold. 

Her work heavily carries her activism for inclusion and equity has transcended beyond the screen and into the film and television community. Mandana’s journey to self-healing began by helping out others who were in similar situations but even less fortunate than her. Throughout the past few years, Mandana followed her father’s charitable footsteps and expanded in helping women who had similar experiences as her.

 

“The only way I felt I could heal, was to be around those in situations that were similar to mine, but less fortunate. There is a sense of healing that began inside of me hearing other women’s stories and situations that I no longer felt alone. I had an image to keep. I showed nothing but a happy face always. But being around others in similar situations, I knew that this time I am in control. And if I have anything to do with it, I will make sure that these women do not wait to get out of the situation,” she continued.

 

Going public was not an easy endeavor for Mandana. Even those who have an endearing true love for her like her father could not see eye to eye with her decision, but she stood by her beliefs. She is coming out publicly as an image for so many young girls to follow. She wants them to see that in life, as much as it seems like someone can have it all, there will be downfalls. But that only inspires strength. 

 

She has continued her career now in various avenues, including property and financial investments, and is currently in the process of turning a lifelong passion for beauty into reality. The company has women from different nationalities worldwide ready to host any kind of event that may need bartending services. In Brisha Henderson’s words, “We are a women’s empowerment organization, and we want to show the world that it is possible to have a little bit of spice alongside the professionalism that a bartending service requires.”

Building SaySay’s Protégé started when Brisha had a regular job and she did not feel any satisfaction from her job. All she could think about was establishing a business. She already majored in Business Management, so the hunger to put her education to use was raging in her. She had some experience in bartending and customer service. Seeing how excellently she did at those jobs, she decided to create a business to give women a good shot at making considerable income.

During her bartending days, many of the women she met day in and day out all wanted to get an extra job to give them extra income. SaySay’s Protégé came to life, and the first set of interested people were women. When she saw women making inquiries about how they could become bartenders and bottle girls, Brisha knew she was doing something right, and it renewed her passion for creating a business that empowers women.

Many women were into all sorts of jobs that demeaned them to earn some income, and Brisha wanted to change that. “I asked myself how women can make money on their time while dealing with people but without feeling disrespected or doing too much work for too many hours. Something similar to what an exotic dancer does but nothing explicit or disrespectful. Then the idea to create SaySay’s Protégé came to me,” Brisha explains.

Since its establishment, Brisha created “Bottle Poppers Bottle Girl Service,” which has become a top favorite for many event planners and organizers for corporate and private events. Brisha collaborated with artists, event managers, and everyone she knew could help her get her company’s name out there. Helping women build their dreams is something Brisha has always been passionate about, and SaySay’s Protégé is not only doing that but also helping her achieve her life dreams of running a successful business too. Her five-year goal is to have SaySay’s Protégé taking care of events in more than five states and having everyone in the United States choosing the company for their events. SaySay’s Protégé gives women the chance to create a fun, active lifestyle while fully grasping their daily duties and expenses.
