The book “Hidden in White Sight: How AI Empowers and Deepens Systemic Racism” highlights the discriminatory elements in AI that disproportionately favor or work against particular races and genders. Lawrence argues in the book that although many people perceive AI as a neutral and impartial technology, it involves numerous inherent flaws in the algorithm and human data. Human bias and prejudice seep into AI because people provide the data and information used by AI for acquiring knowledge, learning, and making decisions. Although discriminatory elements are not purposefully integrated into the AI mechanism, the unintentional biases inherent in people due to social influences permeate AI algorithms and lead to racially biased outcomes. Hidden in White Sight implies that AI deepens and aggravates systemic racism by restricting or refraining people from particular racial backgrounds from public or private services. For example, AI models may disproportionately favor white individuals in loan processing, college application, and healthcare or insurance management due to the biased algorithms underlying such processes.

AI ethics play a primary role in alleviating and eliminating discriminatory elements from AI while upholding values that promote equality and fairness. Systemic racism adversely affects people of color due to a lack of opportunities and inferior academic, healthcare, and social outcomes than their white counterparts. AI aggravates systemic racism by promoting disproportionate outcomes due to the human stereotypes and prejudice embedded in AI algorithms and data. The fast-paced evolution of information technology and social media has led to a parallel shift in what it is like to be a journalist in an increasingly globalized news sector. Journalism as a career has grown increasingly ambiguous as it strives to keep up with the expanding information and communication technology field. As a result, modern journalism is being pushed to adapt by developing new journalistic roles, skills, and practices. One may even argue that a whole new identity is required to reconcile traditional ideas of openness and impartiality with modern society’s burgeoning multimedia interests.

It comes as no surprise that a worldwide network of information sharing has increased the exposure of the general public through several information sources ranging from social media applications to blogs and webpages. With so much information and narrative sources available, it’s easy to lose sight of what it takes to be a professional journalist. When it comes to professional and dedicated journalists, many journalists make it to the list, and Sarah Jones is undoubtedly among those. 

Jones is the founder and president of Sarah Jones Reports LLC. – a multimedia company she founded in 2010 to widen the lens of her journalistic responsibilities. Jones is skilled in multimedia journalism, a new and innovative genre of journalism that focuses on the rapid development of technology to assist newsrooms in adapting to today’s convergent news environment. Jones has given 15 years to this profession, and she has made it the mission of her life to bring real news based on facts to the table. Out of her passion for delivering factual information to the public, Jones films, edits, writes, and produces her own pieces. Her passion and goal drove her to turn her fact-finding into a business and created Sarah Jones Reports LLC. Jones has hosted a kids’ podcast called “Sarah Jones Breaks it Down.” Her journalistic podcast is aimed mainly at children to help them understand current affairs and gain digital literacy. Jones’ podcast got a five-star rating from Common Sense Media for providing reliable news information to over 100 million children and families worldwide.

In addition to being a journalist, Jones is also a thought author and has penned a book named “A Kids Book About War.” It’s a good starting point for further in-depth discussions on war with the kids. Jones has written a book so thoughtfully, tenderly, and passionately that even adults may learn a lot from reading it to their children. Her work delves into the fundamental reasons for people fighting in the war. Her book also discusses what war is, why wars start, and what happens after a war. Jones has shared her wealth of knowledge in an attempt to discuss the issue of war with children in an age-appropriate and non-threatening manner.

Jones formerly worked for BBC World Services in England, CNN, TRT in Istanbul, Turkey, and NBC Midwest. Her efforts and unending enthusiasm for social media indicate her drive and love for the industry. Her social media presence has made her a well-known and prolific online writer. During the Sixth Annual Shorty Awards, presented at the New York Times Center, a council of industry insiders chose her as the Best Writer in Social Media. She also envisioned a gathering on World Press Freedom Day, when global citizens and members of the news media community from around the world maintained a one-minute silence to memorialize the journalists who died while bearing witness. Jones founded the Annual International Moment of Silence, an online event to memorialize the deceased journalist, in co-partnership with The United Nations Plus Social Good, Committee to Protect Journalists, The Frontline Club, The National Press Club, Muck Rack, International Association of Press Clubs, James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, Knight Foundation, and Reddit. The event touched nearly nine million people in the first year. In-person, events were organized on a global level.
