Nestled in the heart of downtown Hollywood lies the latest installment of Sokai, a popular and chic Japanese-Peruvian fusion restaurant. While new on the scene, a recent Friday night saw a full house, with every table sat more than once, and an evident to-go business with orders coming in and out almost constantly. Owned and operated by Venezuelan-born Jesus Leon and Jesus Meneses, Sokai offers a variety of options in a chic environment.

The menus are available either on a QR code that is nicely built into the table or on hard copies for those who prefer paper menus. Their offerings are extensive, so it is easy to find something for everyone. Starting with a variety of appetizers, the Sushi Pizza is especially delicious. A salad of salmon, tuna, and crab tossed in spicy mayo sits on top of crispy white rice and is drizzled with eel sauce. The pizza has a wonderful depth of texture, as you crunch through the different layers, simultaneously being hit with the mayo’s spice and the eel sauce’s sweetness. The can’t-miss appetizer and the pride of the restaurant is the Hamachi Crudo. Thin slices of Hamachi leche de tigre de jalapeno (which is a lightly spicy citrus sauce made from the juice of ceviche) are served with avocado and a delicious micro green salad. Crispy quinoa is mixed with the salad to give the dish a unique crunch not often associated with a crudo dish. This balanced fusion dish perfectly illustrates the bridge between Peruvian and Japanese cuisine.

There are seemingly endless options for entrees, from hot items to specialty rolls to traditional rolls; there’s a little something for everyone. The Rockstar roll was a particular standout once again pairing different textures and flavors to create a culinary delight. With tuna, salmon and cream cheese, topped with crispy tempura, each bite was an experience. Each element was added in delicate proportions so that each piece was exceptionally balanced as it went through the roll. Not to be missed are their “Healthy Options” which are sushi rolls wrapped in fresh vegetables. The Naruto roll with salmon, tuna, trout caviar, yuzu and ginger wrapped in cucumber was fresh and delicious. Each bite had a delightful crunch, belying the freshness of the produce. The little bite of ginger was wonderful.

To wash all of this delicious food down, Sokai offers an extensive and innovative cocktail list, including their famous Sangria served with a frozen fresh fruit popsicle, perfect for refreshment and a quick Instagram picture. They also provide typical Japanese beer offerings chilled cold and in a deliciously frosted glass. Unfortunately, after all the delicious food, there was no room for their famous dessert roll made with Nutella, strawberry, and banana, but hey, there’s always next time.

The restaurant’s history is based on the art of the fusion restaurant. Their ever-evolving, extensive menu boasts over 100 options in all of its variety of food and drinks. All of their menu items are sourced from quality seasonal ingredients year-round. It’s a great meeting venue with your family, friends, or colleagues. Sokai is committed to delivering an exceptional dining experience by serving the finest Japanese delicacies in Florida. They have everything from traditional Japanese sashimi and sushi to sumptuous signature rolls and other popular delicacies that fuse together their unique artistry that combines a fusion of Peruvian and Japanese influences.

A Visit to Rao’s Restaurant at the Loews Hotel Miami Beach

Just off Miami Beach, nestled in the St. Moritz Tower at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, sits Rao’s, a classic New York restaurant known for bringing its 127 years of excellence to Miami. It has an elegant but refined interior, with the same collection of famous faces looking over you as they do in East Harlem; the wall is covered with celebrity portraits, from Leonardo di Caprio to Liza Minnelli. From the host stand to the opening greeting from your server for the evening, Rao’s makes you feel as if you are family.

The dining room has big, comfortable booths and nicely spaced large tables. Guests can easily share meals family-style and not have to be part of every other table’s conversations. The tables are set with white tablecloths, and the dining room is a classic burgundy and gold with a fully stocked bar with old-school dinner club vibes. Despite being much larger than the original location in New York City, the Miami version does well in keeping intimacy at a premium. 

The cocktail menu featured fresh ideas with typically Italian elements, including various Amaros. The Andrea Doria was sweet but not decadent, with a surprisingly smooth finish, while their other drinks looked refreshing and elegant. The wine selection features excellent value for some higher-end wines to pair with the meal by the glass. The Castello Volpaia Chianti was nicely balanced, with not too-heavy glass and a wonderfully juicy finish. The Villa Antinori of the famed Tignanello, Super Tuscan, had a delicious depth of character and finished with just a bit of a bite to help with the inherent richness of the delicious Italian food.

Moving into appetizers, the standards, as explained by the server, are indeed a can’t-miss. Their beef meatballs are tender, juicy, pan-fried, and then left to braise all day in their famous tomato sauce. Both are delicious and are treats to dip your bread into afterward. The classic Caesar salad was fresh and crisp, with a classic dressing that was not overdone. After eating the salad, one feels as if they have eaten a salad, not a burger, as is the case for most Caesars. Following the Italian tradition, treat yourself to a pasta course between the appetizers and entrees. One of the more unique offerings is the Fiochette (a beggar purse-shaped ravioli) filled with Bartlett pears and ricotta and served in a sage brown butter sauce with dried cranberries. The dish is the right combination of sweet and salty and offers something unique, an excellent palette cleanser before the entree.

As for the entrees, the show’s real star was the Cod Livornese. A delicate piece of fish that was cooked to be both tender and juicy; it held together and then flaked apart with each bite. The rustic Neapolitan sauce was centered around their house-made tomato sauce and blanched the salty aspects with a depth of sweetness to the tomatoes you can only get when they’re fresh. The Chicken Cacciatore was nothing to be scoffed at, with lovely large pieces of chicken and sweet sauce in a luxurious lemon sauce with tangy pickled peppers. It wasn’t overly heavy and filled with butter like most cacciatores, and most importantly, it felt like Nonna had made it herself.

AI and Data Privacy: How Lerna AI Offers Best of Both Worlds

The breakneck speed with which Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming our world has been nothing short of exciting. A report by KPMG Global Tech highlights AI and machine learning as the most crucial technologies for achieving short-term goals for tech leaders today.

However, similar to any emerging technology, inherent risks exist. One survey, encompassing over 17,000 individuals, found 61% of respondents expressed apprehension about trusting AI systems, with only half convinced that the benefits outweigh the potential risks. A major concern revolves around personal data privacy.

AI systems are data-hungry beasts. To learn and function effectively, they require massive datasets to train their algorithms and fuel performance. This data often includes personal information like names, addresses, financial details, and even sensitive data like medical records and social security numbers. The collection, processing, and storage of such data raise significant questions regarding its usage and vulnerability.

The Road to Data Privacy

The widespread and unregulated use of AI poses a significant threat to human rights and personal privacy. For example, generative AI (GenAI) uses powerful foundation models trained on massive volumes of unlabeled data— which may or may not take personal data privacy into account.

That’s one of the reasons why AI leaders have issued open letters advocating for a temporary pause in GenAI development. They urge policymakers to establish “guardrails” to ensure their responsible use in the future. As we navigate the complex intercourse between AI innovation and personal data privacy, it is incumbent upon all stakeholders— business leaders, policymakers, technologists, and consumers— to engage in a constructive dialogue aimed at forging a path forward that maximizes the benefits of AI while mitigating its potential risks.
