Joseph Jackson, famously known by his pen name JoJo, is set to bring his gripping novel Got That Get Back to the silver screen in a newly announced film adaptation. Released in December 2022, the book is a powerful exploration of money, betrayal, and the consequences of a life of crime, aimed at resonating deeply with young adults. Now, the author seeks to expand the reach of his message, using film to further expose the darker truths while also offering hope for redemption and self-improvement.
The book story is about a man lured back into the game of illegal deals by the promise of a quick buck. As he reconnects with his old friend LB and is introduced to a new contact, Dollaz, Dread’s financial prospects soar. But as he rises, so do the risks, culminating in a devastating betrayal that forces him to confront the harsh realities of trust in a world driven by greed and vengeance.
JoJo’s novel doesn’t shy away from depicting the allures humans easily slip into but with a stern message to follow: for every dollar earned, the price would be one’s life or the loyalty of that one once trusted. The book’s primary theme of betrayal is a cautionary tale for anyone tempted by the fast lane, showing that while the streets may offer short-term rewards, they also come with inevitable pain and consequences. As the author aptly warns: “People turn on you, and there’s always a cost to be paid.”
The author’s decision to adapt Got That Get Back into a film stems from his desire to reach a broader audience, particularly young adults who may not turn to books but are captivated by movies and social media. The adaptation aims to bring his compelling characters, emotional struggles, and themes of self-reflection to life on the big screen. Through this film, the novelist hopes to deliver a message of hope while also addressing the harsh realities of street life.
“Writing was freedom for me,” the author says. “I started this story in prison, using my life experiences to create something that could teach others. The film is a chance to bring that message to even more people—especially the ones who need to hear it the most.”
With the film now in its early stages, JoJo is actively seeking directors, actors, and investors to join the project. This film promises to be more than just another crime thriller; it’s a story of personal growth, redemption, and the emotional toll of betrayal. It’s a powerful opportunity for filmmakers and actors to become part of a project with both commercial appeal and social impact.
“This isn’t just about entertainment,” JoJo explains. “It’s about showing what really happens when you go down this path, and it’s a story that can resonate with anyone—whether they’ve lived through it or just seen it from the outside.”
In addition to the film, the storyteller is already working hard on his next book, New York State Ways. Like his previous work, this novel centers on the constant pull of the streets, even as one tries to escape it. The story follows a protagonist who, despite efforts to lead a better life, finds himself continually drawn back into the world of crime.
“New York is different,” JoJo says. “It’s gritty, raw, and relentless. In this upcoming book, I wanted to capture how the streets keep calling people back, no matter how hard they try to get away.”
New York State Ways dives even deeper into the challenges of breaking free from the cycle of crime and street life, offering a complex portrait of struggle, faith, and survival. The author hopes this follow-up yet stand-alone book will continue to inspire readers and, through the upcoming film, motivate viewers to seek better paths in life.
For JoJo, these stories are about more than just crime and betrayal. They reflect his personal journey and the lessons he’s learned along the way. Having spent a decade in prison, this author used writing as a way to process his experiences and offer a glimpse into the world he lived through. Now, through both books and the upcoming film, the penman aims to leave behind a legacy of hard-earned wisdom, encouraging young people to steer clear of the life he once knew. He says, “If one person walks away from this story with a better understanding, then I’ve done my job.”
With Got That Get Back heading to the big screen and New York State Ways on the horizon, JoJo’s powerful voice and life lessons are set to reach an even broader audience, sparking conversations about choices, loyalty, and the consequences of a life lived too close to the edge.
