James A. Peterson, the founder of Brushes With Fame LLC, has carved a unique path in the art world, blending his lifelong passion for hip-hop culture with a distinctive approach to portraiture. From his early days as a breakdancer in Milwaukee to his current status as a renowned artist, Peterson’s journey is a testament to his resilience, innovation, and dedication to his craft. His art, celebrated in prestigious institutions like the Universal Hip-Hop Museum and the American Sport Art Museum and Archives, captures the essence of iconic figures in hip-hop and sports, while also making a significant impact through charitable contributions.
Peterson’s love for art and hip-hop began in 1984, when he was just a sixth grader performing breakdancing routines in downtown Milwaukee nightclubs. It was during these formative years that he was first introduced to the dynamic world of hip-hop, a cultural movement that would profoundly influence his artistic career. Growing up in a diverse neighborhood and attending schools with students from various backgrounds, Peterson developed a deep appreciation for different cultures. This multicultural environment, combined with his exposure to hip-hop music and breakdancing, laid the foundation for his future artistic endeavors.

Peterson’s journey took a significant turn when he pursued a Fine Arts degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, followed by a year of graduate studies at the University of New Mexico. Initially focusing on painting and photography, he was inspired by a guest artist who challenged him to find a new way of depicting faces. This pivotal moment led Peterson to experiment with various techniques, including replicating the dot matrix patterns of printed images. His fascination with the interplay of distance and perception resulted in the development of his signature style, characterized by bold colors and intricate patterns that rehumanize mechanically flattened images.

One of Peterson’s early breakthroughs came when he created a 40-inch by 40-inch drawing of Clint Eastwood’s face from a tiny newspaper photo, meticulously recreating the dot matrix pattern. This project sparked his interest in using printed color images as the basis for his paintings. By layering colors and using thick applications of paint, Peterson was able to bring depth and emotion to his subjects, creating visually stunning works that captivated viewers from a distance and revealed intricate details up close.
Peterson’s unique approach caught the attention of his father, who suggested a collaborative project with athletes. This idea led to the creation of two unique paintings for each athlete, one of which the athlete would autograph and the other they would keep. This project allowed Peterson to amass a collection of signed paintings from some of the accomplished athletes in the world, including Michael Jordan. His work was featured in a solo show at the Bergstrom Mahler Art Museum in Neenah, Wisconsin, and in numerous group exhibitions.
Despite his early successes, Peterson faced a period of stagnation in his art career. Unable to secure gallery representation, he decided to stop painting for 20 years. During this time, he got married, started a family, opened a jiu-jitsu dojo, and eventually returned to painting during the pandemic, encouraged by his wife and the positive feedback he received on social media.

Peterson’s return to painting was marked by a renewed passion and a commitment to social justice. His collaborations with celebrities such as Michael Jordan, Spike Lee, Viola Davis, Killer Mike, and Wiz Khalifa highlight his ability to capture the essence of his subjects while addressing important social issues. His pledge to donate 20% of growth from signed works to charities chosen by his BIPOC and LGBTQ subjects reflects his dedication to making a positive impact through his art.
Today, Peterson’s work is celebrated for its originality and emotional depth. His exploration of the role of celebrity and the cultural contributions of his subjects aims to create awareness and raise funds for social causes. By collaborating with high-level celebrities and donating a portion of his growth, Peterson has found a way to blend his artistic talent with his desire to make a positive impact on society.
In addition to his artistic achievements, Peterson continues to train in jiu-jitsu, works out with his daughter, listens to music, and enjoys watching movies. His dedication to his craft and his ability to engage with his audience make him a standout figure in the contemporary art world. His goal is to continue meeting interesting people and exploring the role of celebrity in our culture, all while using his artwork to create awareness and raise money for social justice.
