San Francisco, CA – In the dynamic field of UX and product design, Lulin Shan has emerged as a force to be reckoned with. With a portfolio brimming with innovative projects, Lulin’s expertise has significantly shaped user experiences across various platforms. Her work, particularly the award-winning YouTube Feature Redesign, underscores her prowess in creating  user-centered solutions that blend functionality with intuitive design.

Currently, Lulin serves as a UX/UI Designer at HP in San Diego, CA. Since joining the company in October 2022, she has led several key projects that have enhanced user satisfaction and streamlined product experiences. One of her notable achievements at HP includes the redesign of the printer setup and onboarding process, which resulted in a 12% increase in setup satisfaction scores. By creating and standardizing user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes across multiple platforms, Lulin ensured a consistent and seamless user experience. Her collaboration with visual designers on rebranding over 80 screens in the HP Smart app further highlights her ability to deliver comprehensive design solutions that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

Lulin’s role at HP also involved facilitating brainstorming workshops with designers and managers, generating innovative solutions to optimize the user experience after the first print. Her partnership with UX researchers to plan and conduct user research and usability testing allowed her to present data-driven insights to cross-functional leaders, informing decision-making processes and driving design innovation.

Before her tenure at HP, Lulin gained valuable experience as a Product Design Intern at Baidu in Shenzhen, China, in 2021. At Baidu, she collaborated with product managers to develop monetization strategies for a social networking app, achieving a remarkable 48% trial-to-paid conversion rate in the first month of launching a premium subscription model. She also led the end-to-end design of a user acquisition campaign for a custom keyboard app, resulting in a 70% retention rate among new users. These accomplishments demonstrate Lulin’s ability to thrive in fast-paced environments and deliver impactful design solutions.

Lulin’s academic pursuits also saw her contributing as a Research Assistant at Carnegie Mellon University, where she collaborated with the School of Design faculty to curate the “Dexign Futures” open-source course. She played a key role in creating engaging lecture slides and instructional videos. The course was featured in a summer program organized by Tsinghua University and the OCT Innovation & Research Institute in 2021, attracting 164 students from 45 universities around the world.

Earlier in her career, Lulin worked as a Designer at LRM Landscape Architecture in Culver City, CA. During her tenure from May 2018 to March 2020, she designed and managed over 15 projects from conceptual ideas to construction plans, coordinating with clients to maintain a 90% satisfaction rate through effective communication and integration of feedback. Her work standardized visual language across multiple projects, reducing design time by 18% and improving brand consistency.

Among her many accomplishments, the YouTube Feature Redesign stands out as a crowning achievement. This project reimagined YouTube’s watch and subscribe functionality by introducing note-taking and highlighting features. Users can now take private notes while saving videos, allowing them to quickly recall the purpose of saving a particular video. Additionally, users can highlight specific periods of a video and leave notes along the timeline, making it easier to revisit key parts. These features have proven especially useful for educational or informational videos, which are often longer in duration.

Earlier this year, the YouTube Feature Redesign project won the 2023 European Product Design Award, recognizing the innovative approach and user-centric design. As an important team member, Lulin’s significant contribution to this project exemplifies her ability to foresee user needs and translate them into practical, engaging features.

Lulin Shan’s journey in design is underpinned by her commitment to excellence and her passion for creating meaningful user experiences. Her proficiency in tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, and various 3D modeling software, combined with her skills in UX/UI design, interaction design, and user research, make her a versatile and valuable asset to any design team.

As Lulin looks to the future, her work will undoubtedly continue to influence the field of UX and product design. Her ability to blend innovative thinking with meticulous execution positions her as a leader in crafting digital experiences that resonate with users and drive business success.
