Tittsworth: A Riveting Tale of Heroism and Personal Triumph

O’Connor’s “Tittsworth” takes one from the plains of Nebraska to the jungles of Vietnam following the coming of age of a legitimate American hero. Tittsworth quickly draws readers into the adventurous life of Jim A. Tittsworth, revealing in captivating detail the events and challenges he faces that mold him into a cunning warrior.

The tale begins in tiny Emmett, Nebraska, where James A. Tittsworth is born into a hardworking and patriotic farm family with a history of courageously serving the nation. The character instilled in him from birth reveals itself early when at a young age he disregards the danger to himself to save a downing friend in a farm pond.

As he matures Tittsworth becomes an outstanding athlete and following high school heads to the University of Nebraska on a football scholarship. Moving from a quiet rural life to a bustling college campus was a culture shock, but he quickly adjusts and bonds with his football teammates. A bar scene early in Tittsworth’s college days shows how the author can balance seriousness with humor to hold the reader’s attention. Other incidents in his short college experience; with drug dealers at a gas station, the rescuing of a coed from a violent assault, and falling in love for the first time, are presented in  fascinating detail making the characters real and helping the reader relate to the story. Through each situation Tittsworth remains true to his upbringing. When faced with danger he responds with calm courage and a concern for others. Unfortunately, Tittsworth’s college years end unfulfilled after a depressing string of injuries rob him of a promising football career and a jilted romance leaves him with a broken heart. He chooses the Army as a path to find himself.

Once in the military Tittsworth’s work ethic, perseverance and concern for others propel him into leadership positions where he excels. An incident at a grenade range where  his quick thinking saves the lives of a fellow soldier and an instructor, again demonstrating his courage in the face of personal danger, cements him as someone special.
