The Power of the Unnoticed: Barbara Hynak Finds Strength in Soft Voices

By: Janice O’Brien

In a world filled with lions, warriors, leaders, and ancient prophecies, it would be easy to assume that power belongs to those who can command attention.

Barbara Hynak’s Roars Across the World asks readers to look again.

Some of the novel’s most important inhabitants are among its smallest. They do not rule territories, lead armies or possess the physical strength of the lions and humans around them. Some can barely make themselves heard. Yet through these overlooked creatures, Hynak explores one of the central ideas running through her fantasy novel: importance is not determined by size, visibility or conventional power.

“The wrigglies represent all the creatures that are not cute, useful, or considered worth saving,” Hynak said. “They never fight on the battlefield. They can’t be heard over a lion’s roar.”

Yet the wrigglies refuse to disappear.

Small enough to be tossed aside, they return. Individually they may appear insignificant, but collectively they become impossible to ignore. Hynak uses them to challenge the assumption that the largest or most powerful members of a community are necessarily its most essential.

“Small does not mean weak and unnoticed does not mean unnecessary,” she said.

That idea extends far beyond the wrigglies.

Roars Across the World takes place in a world where humans, lions, and other creatures are struggling with drought, hunger, territorial conflict, and the consequences of decisions made in the name of survival. At its center are Atum-Sani, a human leader, and Tradent, a lion leader. Each carries responsibility for those who depend upon him, and each initially understands power largely through the history and beliefs of his own kind.

But Hynak surrounds these obvious leaders with characters whose strengths are less easily recognized.

Karenna, a character Hynak says was not originally planned, became one of the clearest examples. He is afraid, and rather than eliminating that fear to make him conventionally heroic, Hynak allows it to become part of his courage.

“He is not fearless; in fact, his fear is his strength,” Hynak said. “His courage is in looking beyond fighting to find another solution.”

Lamasu, a lion who initially brought humor to the story, developed into another kind of counterweight to traditional ideas about strength. His willingness to question Tradent becomes increasingly important, particularly because he remains loyal while doing so.

Through Lamasu, Hynak suggests that loyalty does not require silence.

These characters are part of a larger pattern in Roars Across the World. Again and again, the novel questions what power looks like and who possesses it. Physical strength matters in this world. Lions must kill to eat. Humans may kill to protect themselves. Hunger and drought have real consequences, and Hynak deliberately avoids creating a natural world stripped of its harsher realities.

But physical power is only one form of power.

“Strength is not measured only by size, speed, teeth, or power,” Hynak said. “It is measured by our differences, and our ability to hold our one small place in the web so that the strand does not break.”

That web is central to Hynak’s vision of the natural world. Rivers, rain, grass, predators, prey, humans, and creatures small enough to escape notice all exist within relationships. Remove or damage one strand and the effects travel outward.

It is also why the wrigglies matter.

They represent lives that might easily be dismissed because they are neither majestic nor particularly useful from a human point of view. Hynak gives them a place in the story precisely because they are easy to overlook. Their value does not depend upon whether the more powerful creatures understand their purpose.

“They are the strands we never see,” Hynak said. “Yet they are as essential as the lion or the human. The web cannot hold without them.”

There is an ecological message in that idea, but there is also a broader examination of how we assign value.

Humans naturally notice the spectacular. A lion commands attention in a way that a tiny creature beneath the soil does not. The same instinct can shape the stories people tell about strength: leaders receive attention, warriors become heroes, and dramatic actions are remembered.

Hynak is interested in what happens beyond that spotlight.

Sometimes courage belongs to the character who admits fear. Sometimes loyalty belongs to the one willing to question a leader. Sometimes power belongs not to one commanding figure but to many small creatures acting together.

That perspective also helps explain why Hynak chose fiction to explore ecological responsibility. Facts can describe drought, extinction, and changing ecosystems. Fiction allows her to give those relationships voices, histories, and consequences. A lion is not simply an environmental symbol. A tiny creature does not exist merely to teach humans a lesson. Each occupies its own place within the living world.

Hynak describes interconnectedness as the heart of Roars Across the World, summed up in a deceptively simple idea: “All are Connected, and therefore All are Needed.”

Perhaps that is why some of the smallest characters carry such weight.

The lion may have the roar powerful enough to cross the night.

But Hynak’s world cannot survive on roars alone.

Choosing the Right New Jeep for Your Lifestyle

Few vehicles carry the personality of a Jeep. From rugged off-roaders to comfortable daily drivers, the lineup covers a lot of ground, which makes narrowing your choice both fun and a little overwhelming.

The easiest way to start is by seeing the current lineup for yourself. Exploring the new jeep for sale in Queens shoppers are eyeing shows you how the models differ in size, capability, and price.

Match the Model to How You Drive

A weekend adventurer and a daily commuter want very different things from a Jeep. Be honest about how often you will actually go off-road versus how much comfort and efficiency you need day to day.

This is where visiting a jeep dealership in NYC pays off, since sitting in each model tells you more than any spec sheet. The right choice balances capability with the realities of city and highway driving.

Consider Features and Capability

Jeep trims range widely in their off-road hardware, technology, and creature comforts. Knowing which features you will genuinely use keeps you from overpaying for capability you will rarely tap.

Comparing options across nearby Long Island jeep dealers helps you gauge fair pricing and availability. Focus on the configuration that matches your priorities rather than the flashiest one on the lot.

Plan Your Visit

Popular Jeep configurations move quickly, so knowing what is in stock lets you act when the right one appears. A quick look at current inventory saves wasted trips.

Come prepared with your must-haves and your budget, and you will make a confident decision rather than an impulsive one.

Which New Jeep Is Right for You

The right new Jeep is the one that fits how you actually drive, not just how you imagine driving. Matching model and features to your life is the key.

Explore the lineup, compare trims, and visit prepared. That is how you land a Jeep you will enjoy for years.

Il Forno Named Favourite Casual Italian Restaurant at the What’s On Awards

A 26-year journey of Italian excellence, recognised by the people who matter most: its customers

Abu Dhabi, UAE. Il Forno is proud to announce that it has been named Favourite Casual Italian Restaurant at the What’s On Awards, a hospitality awards program in the UAE. The recognition is particularly meaningful for the brand because the winners are selected through public votes, reflecting the trust and loyalty of the customers who continue to choose Il Forno.

Since opening its first restaurant in Abu Dhabi in 2000, Il Forno has grown from a single location into an established Italian restaurant brand in the UAE, with more than 30 locations across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Al Ain, Sharjah, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah.

For more than two decades, the brand has focused on bringing the flavours and traditions of Italy to diners across the UAE. Its menu includes handcrafted pizzas, freshly prepared pasta, signature appetisers, desserts, and a selection of dishes designed to offer a welcoming Italian dining experience for families, friends, and food lovers.

Staying True to Italian Roots

While Il Forno has grown significantly over the years, its approach to food has remained closely connected to its Italian roots. Traditional recipes, quality ingredients, generous portions, and warm hospitality continue to form the foundation of the brand.

Consistency has also played an important role in its growth. Whether a customer is visiting Il Forno for the first time or returning after many years, the aim is to provide the same familiar standards of food, service, and hospitality across its restaurants.

Growing With Its Customers

The restaurant industry has changed considerably since Il Forno opened its doors in 2000. Customer expectations have evolved, and technology has become an important part of the dining experience.

Il Forno has responded by expanding its menu, introducing seasonal offerings, refreshing its restaurant concepts, improving its delivery services, and investing in digital ordering platforms. The brand has also explored new marketing initiatives, customer engagement campaigns, and data-led strategies to better understand the changing preferences of its guests.

At the same time, the focus remains on keeping the dining experience personal and welcoming.

The Importance of Customer Feedback

Customer feedback continues to be an important part of Il Forno’s development. Reviews across restaurants and delivery platforms provide valuable insight into what customers enjoy and where improvements can be made.

Positive feedback encourages the team, while constructive comments help identify areas where the brand can do better. Listening to customers has therefore remained an important part of Il Forno’s approach to maintaining its standards as the business continues to grow.

Embracing Technology and Innovation

Technology is playing an increasingly important role in the restaurant industry, and Il Forno has continued to adapt to these changes.

The brand has invested in online ordering, delivery platform optimisation, digital marketing, customer engagement initiatives, AI-assisted creative content, and data-driven marketing strategies. These tools help the team understand customer behaviour, improve efficiency, and make ordering and dining more convenient.

However, technology is viewed as a way to support the customer experience rather than replace the personal hospitality that has always been central to the Il Forno brand.

Looking Ahead

Il Forno’s journey is far from over. The brand plans to continue growing while maintaining the values that have shaped its success over the past 26 years.

Customers can expect new menu ideas, seasonal offerings, enhanced dining experiences, improved digital services, new locations, and continued investment in food quality and customer service.

For Il Forno, the goal is not simply to expand, but to make sure that each new step maintains the quality, authenticity, and hospitality that customers have come to associate with the brand.

What the What’s On Award Means to Il Forno

Receiving the What’s On Award is a proud moment for everyone at Il Forno. Because the winners are chosen by the public, the award represents more than industry recognition. It reflects the experiences, trust, and loyalty of the customers who took the time to vote.

The recognition is also a reflection of the work carried out every day by Il Forno’s chefs, restaurant teams, and support staff. Their dedication helps ensure that customers receive the same level of care and quality across the brand’s locations.

For Il Forno, the award is both a celebration of what has been achieved and encouragement for what comes next.

Executive Interview

In an exclusive interview, Il Forno’s leadership team reflects on the brand’s journey since 2000, its What’s On Award win, the importance of authentic Italian dining, and the role of innovation in shaping the future of the brand.

What do you believe sets Il Forno apart from other Italian restaurants in the UAE?

Authenticity has always been at the heart of Il Forno. We combine traditional Italian recipes with quality ingredients, generous portions, and genuine hospitality to create an experience that feels welcoming and familiar.

Consistency is equally important to us. Whether someone visits us for the first time or has been a customer for years, we want them to experience the same quality, taste, and level of service.

How important is customer feedback to Il Forno’s success?

Customer feedback is one of the most valuable ways for us to understand our guests. We regularly monitor reviews across our restaurants and delivery platforms to see what customers appreciate and where we can improve.

Every positive review is encouraging, while constructive feedback gives our teams an opportunity to raise their standards. Listening to our customers has been an important part of our growth over the years.

How is Il Forno embracing innovation and technology?

Innovation has become an important part of the modern restaurant experience. We have invested in online ordering, delivery optimisation, digital marketing, customer engagement campaigns, AI-assisted creative content, and data-driven marketing.

These developments help us understand our customers better, improve efficiency, and make the overall dining experience more convenient. At the same time, we continue to value the personal service and hospitality that define Il Forno.

What can customers expect from Il Forno in the future?

Our focus is on continued growth without losing sight of the values that have brought us this far.

Customers can look forward to new menu creations, enhanced dining experiences, greater convenience through digital platforms, new restaurant locations, and continued investment in quality and service.

Most importantly, we want to continue creating memorable experiences through authentic Italian food and genuine hospitality.

What has been one of Il Forno’s biggest achievements over the past few years?

Winning the What’s On Award is certainly one of our proudest achievements because it represents the trust and appreciation of our customers.

At the same time, our continued expansion across the UAE, stronger partnerships, new concepts, marketing initiatives, and ongoing investment in customer experiences have all contributed to our progress.

Together, these achievements have helped Il Forno strengthen its position among Italian restaurant brands in the UAE.
