From Music to Footwear: Trisno Ishak As Singapore’s Rising Influence in Global Fashion

By: Adam Campbell

With Ortenhill, a footwear brand making waves far beyond Singapore’s shores, former musician Trisno Ishak transitioned to the fashion industry, blending music and fashion in an unusual duet. “Fashion, like music, is about breaking boundaries and telling your own story,” he says.

From its humble beginnings, Ortenhill has grown exponentially, attracting a loyal following across Southeast Asia, Europe, and now the United States. Led by Trisno, the company’s focus on quality craftsmanship and adherence to sustainability resonate with consumers who are increasingly aware of the effects of their purchases.

The Beat of a New Drum

Trisno Ishak was prominent in Singapore’s music scene in the early 2000s. He was the frontman of the hip-hop/R&B group Urban Xchange and later the psychedelic rock band Parking Lot Pimp. Urban Xchange struck a major label deal with Universal Music Singapore, which propelled them to regional fame. Parking Lot Pimp, with its distinctive sound, further solidified Trisno’s reputation as a versatile and influential artist.

However, the music industry’s volatility weighed heavily on him over time. “The music industry is unpredictable, and I felt that it was time to channel my creative energies into something more enduring,” Trisno reflects.

The introspection led to the birth of Ortenhill in 2011, a company that began as a small venture driven by the philosophy that fashion should be an expression of individuality, not conformity.

Crafting a Unique Footprint

Ortenhill’s unisex designs, which challenge the traditional boundaries of gender-specific fashion, click with a new generation of consumers who value inclusivity and self-expression. The brand’s signature products, like the unisex flat classic sandals and the Yanagi unisex straw-like flat sandals, are only a few of the examples that reflect the brand’s philosophies.

“Our products are both about aesthetics and making a statement,” Trisno explains. “More than just wearing stylish footwear, we want our customers to feel empowered to express themselves in their own way.”

When examining the numbers, a compelling narrative emerges. In 2023, Ortenhill reported a 57% increase in market presence within Southeast Asia and a significant growth in Europe and the USA. Looking forward to 2024, the global footwear market is set to grow at an annual rate of 5%. Ortenhill is strategically equipped to utilize eco-friendly materials, like recycled rubber tires for sandal soles, to differentiate itself from competitors.

Trisno’s leadership has been critical in managing the obstacles of growing a business in a notoriously challenging industry. “One of the biggest challenges was maintaining our brand’s integrity while expanding,” he admits. “We didn’t want to lose the essence of what made us unique.”

He explains that this essence is rooted in Ortenhill’s commitment to creating versatile, timeless designs that transcend fleeting fashion trends. This dedication has led to invitations to prestigious events like Singapore Fashion Week and Dubai Modest Fashion Week, where Ortenhill has showcased its collections to international audiences.

The Confluence of Creativity and Commerce

Trisno’s journey from the stage to the boardroom illustrates the influence of creativity when it is channeled into entrepreneurship. His ability to blend artistry with business acumen has sustained Ortenhill through its formative years and positioned the brand as a trendsetter in the global fashion industry. “Creativity doesn’t stop when you leave the studio or the stage,” he says. “It’s about finding new ways to connect with people, whether through music or fashion.”

Ortenhill’s medium-term goals include establishing a solid online presence in the U.S. and building a community of loyal customers through engaging content and storytelling. The brand’s long-term vision is even more ambitious: to create a physical presence in the U.S.

Reflecting on the brand’s success so far, Trisno Ishak’s words are grounded. “We’ve come a long way, but there’s still so much more we want to achieve,” he says. We aim to inspire others to embrace their individuality, just as we have.”

Charlotte Hendrickx Co-Produces “What’s Up Don Quixote” at the Brisk Festival in LA

Last week, Los Angeles wrapped up one of its vibrant annual theater celebrations: the Brisk Festival. Showcasing an exciting selection of theatrical works from across the globe, this year’s festival featured over 50 innovative and engaging plays, offering both English and Spanish performances. At the heart of the festival’s excitement was the much-anticipated world premiere of What’s Up Don Quixote, a fresh and imaginative reimagining of Miguel de Cervantes’ timeless novel. Co-produced by the multi-talented Charlotte Hendrickx, the play quickly became one of the festival’s standout highlights, drawing rave reviews from audiences and critics alike.

For New Yorkers and theater enthusiasts, the name Charlotte Hendrickx is no stranger. Her work has already been seen in the Big Apple, including her co-production of Promises, Promises, which was featured at the prestigious Big Apple Film Festival. While New York is celebrated as the world’s important city for theater, boasting a rich history and an unparalleled platform for live performance, Los Angeles, too, has grown into a critical hub for live theater. With many artists calling LA their creative home, the city now boasts a dynamic theatrical community that attracts a range of productions, including What’s Up Don Quixote.

New York may stand as the ultimate city for theater, but LA offered the perfect stage for the Brisk Festival. What’s Up Don Quixote, co-produced by Hendrickx, exemplified the city’s flourishing theatrical scene. Directed by Mario Ivan Martinez, the production breathed new life into Cervantes’ beloved character, blending elements of fantasy, humor, and introspective reflection. Charlotte Hendrickx’s work on the play revealed her knack for taking complex stories and making them relatable and contemporary.

Hendrickx, alongside an excelent team including Ye Zhong, Gisely Ayub, Valeria Muñoz, Ryan Jensen, and executive producer Rodolfo Ornelas, set out to craft a production that honors the spirit of the original while making it accessible to today’s audiences. The play weaves in traditional elements of theater, such as original music, while also embracing modern narrative techniques, creating an immersive experience that kept festival-goers on the edge of their seats.

The Brisk Festival’s emphasis on new and original works made it the ideal setting for What’s Up Don Quixote to debut. Festival-goers were treated to not just a classic retelling, but a vibrant, contemporary twist that made Don Quixote’s journey feel fresh, fun, and relevant. Audiences from LA and beyond were captivated by the production’s inventive interpretation, which combined humor, wit, and an underlying sense of nostalgia for a story that has been loved for centuries.

Though What’s Up Don Quixote was produced in LA, its success at the Brisk Festival only further highlights how interconnected the theater worlds of New York and Los Angeles are. Many of the artists involved in What’s Up Don Quixote, including Hendrickx, have worked across both cities, demonstrating how a production in one theater hub can have a ripple effect across the industry. New Yorkers have long prided themselves on their city’s unparalleled theater culture, but LA’s thriving scene has become a place where artists can take creative risks and produce work that resonates on a global scale.

The Brisk Festival, known for celebrating bold, original theater, has grown into one of Los Angeles’ anticipated events. Alongside What’s Up Don Quixote, the festival featured 31 short plays in English, 19 in Spanish, as well as workshops, masterclasses, and even live music concerts. Each performance offered a platform for diverse voices and perspectives, adding to LA’s ever-growing reputation as a destination for theater lovers.

Charlotte Hendrickx’s role in co-producing What’s Up Don Quixote underscores her growing influence in the theater world. The play’s popularity during the festival, with tickets selling out quickly, sparked conversations about adding extra performances.

Hendrickx’s work and her team in What’s Up Don Quixote, exemplifies the evolving nature of theater in today’s world, where classic stories are reimagined.

The Key Steps to Building a Thriving Career as a Lash Artist

Becoming a successful lash artist is more than mastering the perfect lash application. It’s about building a strong foundation for your business, developing genuine client relationships, and continuing to grow as both an artist and an entrepreneur. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been lashing for a while and are ready to take your career to the next level, there are specific strategies that can help you build a thriving, long-lasting lash business.

1. Master Your Craft

The first and most important step to success is being great at what you do. Mastering your lash application skills takes time, patience, and practice, but it’s the foundation of your career. Whether you specialize in classic lashes or offer volume, hybrid, or YY lashes, make sure your technique is flawless.

Invest in high-quality education—don’t just stop after your initial certification. Advanced courses, workshops, and ongoing training can help you refine your skills, stay up-to-date with new trends, and learn faster, more efficient techniques like working with premade fans or Rapid Promade Fans.

2. Use High-Quality Products

Your work is only as good as the products you use. Investing in premium-quality lashes, adhesives, and tools will not only make your job easier but will also ensure better retention and more satisfied clients. Clients notice when their lashes last longer and look better, which builds trust and loyalty.

For example, using Mega Lash Academy’s cashmere lashes for lash extensions or their pro lash adhesives can greatly enhance the durability and retention of lash sets, resulting in happier, loyal clients.

When lash artists use high-quality products, it also enhances their reputation. Clients notice when their lashes last longer and feel more comfortable, making them more likely to return and recommend the service to others.

3. Build Strong Client Relationships

Client retention is key to building a successful lash business. Developing strong, genuine relationships with your clients keeps them coming back and helps you build a solid client base.

  • Listen to their needs: Every client is different, and taking the time to understand their lash preferences, concerns, and lifestyle will help you deliver personalized service that exceeds their expectations.
  • Educate your clients: Teach them about proper aftercare, the importance of lash retention, and how to maintain their lashes between appointments. Offering tips and product recommendations (like lash cleansers or aftercare kits) shows that you care about their experience beyond the chair.
  • Create a welcoming environment: Clients want to feel comfortable and pampered when they come to you. Make your space inviting and professional, and always provide excellent customer service.

4. Stay Consistent with Branding and Marketing

Success isn’t just about your skills—it’s also about how you present yourself and your brand. Whether you’re a solo lash artist or running a team, your brand should be consistent and recognizable.

  • Social media presence: Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook are great platforms to showcase your work, promote new services, and engage with your audience. Share before-and-after photos, client testimonials, and even behind-the-scenes content to connect with potential clients.
  • Build a website: A professional website is essential for establishing your credibility. Make it easy for clients to book appointments, learn about your services, and contact you.
  • Email and SMS marketing: Keep your clients updated with promotions, new services, and special offers through email or SMS marketing. A friendly reminder or a special birthday discount can go a long way in keeping clients engaged.

5. Never Stop Learning

The lash industry is constantly evolving, and to stay successful, you need to keep learning. Trends come and go, and new techniques are always being developed. The most successful lash artists are the ones who continue to invest in their education and grow their skill set.

Consider specializing in advanced lash techniques like Russian Volume or Mega Volume or even branching out into lash lifts and brow services. Offering a wider range of services allows you to attract more clients and increase your earning potential.

6. Manage Your Time and Energy

Lashing is a demanding job, and it’s important to manage your time and energy effectively to avoid burnout. Overworking yourself may lead to fatigue and lower the quality of your work. Success is about consistency over the long run, not pushing yourself to the brink in the short term.

  • Set boundaries: Establish a work schedule that gives you time to recharge. It’s okay to say no to squeezing in last-minute clients if it affects your mental and physical health.
  • Self-care matters: Taking care of yourself is critical to your success. Make time for exercise, rest, and hobbies outside of lashing to keep yourself balanced and energized.

7. Be Patient and Stay Committed

Building a successful lash career takes time. It’s easy to get discouraged, especially when you’re starting out, and business is slow. But remember, every lash artist starts from somewhere, and success comes to those who stay committed, put in the work, and continuously seek to improve.

Celebrate the small wins—whether it’s a loyal client who refers a friend or hitting a new milestone in your business. These victories are signs of growth and will eventually lead to the thriving lash business you’ve always dreamed of.

You’ve Got What It Takes

Success as a lash artist doesn’t happen overnight, but with hard work, continuous education, and a commitment to your clients, you can build a career that’s not only financially rewarding but personally fulfilling. You have the talent, the drive, and the passion—now it’s time to take that next step and create the successful lash career you deserve.

How Evgenii Panteleev Turned His Nightmares into Power

By: Barbara Lawn

What do you know about fear? That sticky feeling of dread paralyzes your movements and sends a sickening spasm through your stomach. Now, imagine a six-year-old boy who has lived with this feeling for as long as he can remember. He wakes up in a cold sweat every night, his heart racing. During the day, the fear retreats, but when the sun goes down, it returns.

They say bravery is not the absence of fear but the ability to conquer it. Evgenii Panteleev is the child we mentioned at the beginning. He began his battle with fear at the age of 15. Now, at 31, he has not only conquered his fear but has also mastered it in a unique way.

How It All Began

Evgenii Panteleev’s mother was a trained theater actress – a creative and emotional person. After his birth, she abruptly left the stage and dedicated herself to God. She never spoke about her reasons, but young Evgenii sensed they were significant. He grew up as a sensitive child with a deep understanding of nature and an uncanny ability to recognize human fear.

He was particularly good at recognizing fear, perhaps because he had lived with it constantly since childhood.

Evgenii Panteleev never analyzed how or why fear settled within him. He didn’t see the need. He just knew it was there. Perhaps it was rooted in the loneliness he felt so acutely: although his family loved him, they raised him with strict discipline. The boy had no toys – his parents considered them frivolous and ungodly. He wasn’t celebrated on his birthdays. At school, his peers avoided him. Art became his escape from the oppressive reality: in his free time, he drew. But unlike other children, who drew suns and cars, he sketched spiders, bats, skulls, and various insects.

“My mother was very worried about this and even took me to a psychologist to understand this strange interest. But the doctors said I just liked it and that it wasn’t anything serious,” recalls Evgenii Panteleev.

But It Was Serious – Just Not in the Drawings, but in the Dreams

Fantastic monsters appeared every time the boy entered deep sleep. At first, he would wake up in a panic, terrified to close his eyes again. This left him tired and unfocused during the day. His teachers thought he was simply lazy and never gave him higher than a passing grade, just enough to move him from one grade to the next.

This went on for years. The boy transferred his nightmares onto paper, reclaiming each day from the brink of madness. Perhaps it would have continued like this if, at the age of 15, he hadn’t gotten his first tattoo. “A local artist, whose name I don’t remember, gave me a makeshift tattoo on my arm that read, ‘If you want to live, learn to hustle.’ Just a typical tough-guy phrase – today, I’d never get something like that,” Evgenii laughs. “But back then, it helped me feel more confident.”

This was the turning point. The teenager felt the ground stabilize beneath his feet and enthusiastically began covering his arms with pictures and quotes.

Then, at some point, he decided to cover them all in black ink. “It turned out looking like something from Marvel’s Black Death. That’s when I realized I was no longer a victim—that fear could be controlled. That was also the first time I got into a fight! I stood up to a bully, even though my parents always told me not to fight, to run away or turn the other cheek,” Evgenii Panteleev recalls.

Several years later, when nearly his entire body was covered in tattoos, the young but finally adult man took an extraordinary risk – he had black ink injected into the sclera of his eyes. This is an uncommon tattoo.

For ordinary people, it looks frightening, even shocking! “But for me, it was a gateway to a new world,” says Evgenii Panteleev. “I stopped feeling fear. And I realized that my mission is to help others cope with it – not just to endure or try to escape, but to turn the situation around.”

Hydra and Psychological Horror Abstraction

Before becoming a tattoo artist, Evgenii tried several different professions. He worked as a kitchen assistant in a café, a welder on a conveyor line, a bartender, and a quality specialist at a regional Nissan dealership. When he turned 23, he left his hometown, though he had been living independently since 18. He moved away and opened his own tattoo studio, which he named Hydra – after the mythical creature.

The studio quickly gained popularity because Evgenii Panteleev offered more than ordinary tattoos—he specialized in dark art, within which he developed his own unique style, later called “Psychological Horror Abstraction.”

Conceptually, the technique developed by Evgenii Panteleev is both simple and complex. Its goal is to visualize fear into a symbolic image and then apply it to the part of the body the person considers most vulnerable. It’s like setting a guard. When fear appears, it confronts its own reflection, like in a mirror.

To help clients encapsulate their fear in a drawing, Evgenii Panteleev first talks with them, listening and understanding like no one else. After all, he has personally walked through nine circles of hell with his own fear. He suggests associating fear with animals, plants, or birds, but not in the classic “light” perception—instead, in a monstrous form. This is in the style of dark art, the shadowy side of art filled with mystically grim multiform attributes.

“During our conversation, I see how the person gradually relaxes, expressing everything that has been bottled up inside them for years. Because the battle with fear is always a solitary struggle. You don’t tell anyone for fear of being seen as crazy, and if you’re lucky, they’ll just laugh at you – but they could also lock you up in an asylum. This fear of sharing your fears with others, the fear of being misunderstood, and the fear of the potential consequences of such revelations – that’s what holds people back from taking the first step toward overcoming their fear. It’s a vicious circle,” says Panteleev.

But when you talk to someone who has walked the path from beginning to end alone and emerged successful, it becomes easier. But true relief comes when the tattoo begins to “work.”

“There’s no quackery in my method – it’s pure psychology. The most important thing for a person is their emotional state and belief. And if they find peace in the thought that the image on their skin is protecting them, why take that belief away?” says Evgenii Panteleev.

Today, Evgenii Panteleev is a successful tattoo artist. He has personally completed over 10,000 horror-abstraction tattoos. Participating in hundreds of tattoo conventions, he has gained thousands of devoted fans and followers of his style. But he’s also known as an illustrator for horror films and the author of the book “The Therapeutic Effect of Horror Abstractions.”

Once you see Evgenii Panteleev, you won’t forget him. His appearance is as unique as his way of conquering fear. His method aligns with the International Association of Psychologists’ guidelines, though individual results may vary. Some may find his approach more effective than traditional methods. Because he knows firsthand that the battle with fear is an incredible journey marked by courage and personal growth, it’s not just about bold actions but about the inner strength and resilience that develop in the process.

The battle with fear is an integral part of the human experience; it becomes the foundation of courage and sheds light on the transformative power of facing fear head-on. And it’s excellent luck if, along this challenging path, you encounter a worthy guide like Evgenii Panteleev, who will lead you through the dark corridors to victory.

Melissa Locke and Dr. Steven Ip Talk Passion and Purpose

Melissa Locke’s journey to Los Angeles is the kind of story that could only happen in L.A. Raised in Indiana, Melissa was on stage from a young age, classically trained in ballet and various dance styles. Driven by her love of performing, she packed her Mitsubishi Eclipse in the mid-90s, left Chicago with $4,000 she had saved from working at a nightclub and headed west.

When she hit the end of the ten freeway, a left turn into Venice landed her in the middle of a creative circus where opportunity was everywhere. Her landlord, a soap opera actor, suggested she try extra and stand-in work to get her SAG card, and she dove right in, driving all over town with her trusty Thomas Guide.

Reinventing Herself in L.A.

Realizing that waiting tables and extra work wouldn’t cut it long-term, Melissa pivoted to skincare, enrolling in esthetic school. Working in dark, quiet rooms became a form of performance—intimate, therapeutic, and flexible enough to keep up with auditions and side gigs. It was in this phase that she met her husband, Dr. T.Y. Steven Ip started working at his practice, adding another layer to her evolving L.A. story.

Making Her Mark in Acting and Modeling

Melissa’s career has evolved in exciting ways over the years. She’s appeared in short films and is currently working on a biopic about Elizabeth Taylor. On the modeling side, she’s walked in both Los Angeles and New York Fashion Weeks, and this year she’s hosting red carpets for the Los Angeles Fashion Show. Melissa’s also an ambassador for the event, which is a role she’s thrilled about.

Giving back is close to Melissa’s heart. She volunteers with organizations that focus on feeding children who face food insecurity, both locally and in Africa. She also sponsors a young man named Vincent at the River Jordan Orphanage in Kenya and hopes to visit him someday.

Dr. T.Y. Steven Ip: The Art and Science of Aesthetic Surgery

Dr. T.Y. Steven Ip’s path to becoming a plastic surgeon was driven by his love for both art and science. With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Ip runs practices on Park Avenue in Manhattan, Beverly Hills, and Newport Beach, focusing on facial rejuvenation and breast and body surgery. He’s often featured in the media, from Entertainment Tonight to Page Six, for his expert take on the latest trends in plastic surgery.

Leading in Aesthetic Innovations

In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Ip serves as the medical director of one of the busiest medspas in Southern California, offering the latest in non-surgical aesthetic treatments. His newest venture, the Fashion Island Surgery Center, is the largest outpatient plastic surgery center in Orange County and a training ground for future plastic surgeons—a clear sign of his commitment to the field.

From Melissa’s creative projects to Dr. Ip’s surgical innovations, they’ve carved out a life that’s as inspiring as it is unique. As Melissa likes to say, “If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.”

Empowering the Bystanders: The Key Role in Stopping Bullying

By: Overnight Publicity

Bullying continues to cast a long shadow, affecting countless students worldwide. However, there’s a glimmer of hope in an unexpected place – the bystanders, those who witness bullying firsthand. These silent observers hold a unique power to reshape the narrative and transform the school environment. Let’s explore how bystander intervention can be a game-changer in the fight against bullying and why training programs are crucial in preparing students for this vital role.

But let’s be real – expecting students to intervene without any guidance is like asking them to solve a complex equation without teaching them math. This is where bystander training programs become invaluable, equipping students with the tools and confidence to make a difference.

Schools that have embraced these programs are seeing real change. Students are stepping up, speaking out, and creating a ripple effect of positivity. But here’s the thing – it can’t just be a one-person show. Tackling bullying requires a united front. Everyone in the school community needs to roll up their sleeves and work together to create a safe haven where respect isn’t just a buzzword, but a way of life.

Take Allicia Flemons, for example. Her work as a school psychologist and advocate against bullying shows us that real change comes from persistence, education, and teamwork. Through her platform on ConchoValleyHomepage.com, Flemons drives home the point that every voice matters in this fight. Her message serves as a powerful reminder that change starts with each of us, right where we stand.

As we dig deeper into both personal actions and bigger-picture solutions to combat bullying, it’s clear that bystanders aren’t just casual observers – they’re the unsung heroes in this story of change.

For those hungry for more information on Allicia Flemons’ work or looking for resources to fight bullying in their own backyard, head over to ConchoValleyHomepage.com. You can also catch her interview on Concho Valley News to hear her story firsthand and learn about her impactful feature on the show.

We’re at a crossroads where understanding morphs into action, where silence transforms into advocacy, and where every informed student becomes a champion for safer schools.

By putting bystander training programs front and center and nurturing a culture of mutual respect and empathy in our schools, we’re not just addressing bullying – we’re reshaping our collective future towards a more inclusive, understanding, and kind world.

This isn’t just about facing down bullies; it’s about empowering those who felt powerless. It’s about turning bystanders into advocates for change – one courageous act at a time – and ensuring that no child ever has to face their bullies alone.

Bystanders, once seen as part of the problem through their inaction, are now pivotal to the solution through their involvement. They truly are the unsung heroes in our ongoing battle against bullying.

To keep this momentum going, school communities can organize regular workshops, create supportive peer networks, and foster open conversations about bullying and its ripple effects. With unwavering focus and dedication, we can build safer, more inclusive spaces where every student can spread their wings and soar.

Remember, in the fight against bullying, every action counts, no matter how small. So, let’s stand together, speak up, and create the change we want to see in our schools and beyond.

Faron Pharmaceuticals: The Biopharmaceutical Company That Seeks to Take Innovation Further

For many decades, cancer has confounded the medical and scientific community, with myriad mutations making it very hard to treat. Cancer is not a single disease but a group of diseases affecting different body parts. A different set of mutations causes each tumor, so a drug that works for a particular type of cancer or an individual patient may be absolutely ineffective on another.

As scientists learn more about cancer and new mutations, including treatment-resistant cancers, there is a need to find more cancer treatments by exploring additional avenues and applying innovative technologies. Many older treatments, such as many forms of chemotherapy, have a toxic effect, as these can kill healthy tissues alongside the cancer cells. This means finding less toxic treatments with less severe side effects on patients is important.

Faron Pharmaceuticals, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Finland, is one of the entities developing new immunotherapy-based treatments for cancer by using biological molecules and stimulating the body’s own immune system to fight cancer. Its flagship project is the development of bexmarilimab (bex), a humanized monoclonal antibody molecule being trialed in treating several treatment-resistant cancers, including myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), an aggressive form of leukemia. Bex works by binding to Clever-1, an immunosuppressive scavenger receptor found on macrophages that prevents them from normally presenting the cancer cells they capture to the immune system. By binding to Clever-1, bex allows the immune system to attack the tumor cells, reducing or eliminating its size.

Bex is currently in its Phase I/II clinical trial, with funding secured to complete Phase II and plans to move to Phase III through the FDA’s accelerated approval process.

Faron is a family-based company founded in 2007 by Drs. Markku and Sirpa Jalkanen, two postdoctoral Stanford University graduates who moved back to Finland to start multiple biotechnology businesses. Their son, Dr. Juho Jalkanen, MD, PhD, is the company’s current CEO, while their daughter, Dr. Maija Hollmén, PhD, is the company’s chief scientific officer.

Dr. Juho, who also holds a degree in business, wrote the company’s business plan, which centers on taking promising academic discoveries in biopharmacology and creating tangible drug development programs out of them. According to him, many scientists lack the entrepreneurial expertise to commercialize discoveries that could benefit humanity, and Faron’s goal is to help bring these discoveries to market. He adds that Faron’s name comes from the words “far” and “on,” reflecting its slogan of “taking innovations further.”

However, this process isn’t as straightforward as scientists, Faron, and patients desire. Dr. Juho says that Faron had been working on a different clinical program before focusing on bex. This involved CD73, a key molecule for protecting the endothelium, or the inner layer of the blood vessels. This prevents leakage of the endothelium caused by trauma or severe respiratory infections, such as COVID-19 and influenza. In the case of COVID-19, the excessive inflammatory reactions cause capillaries to start leaking into organs, causing damage and possibly death. Faron, who was studying CD73 even before the COVID pandemic, found that the best way to introduce the molecule to the body’s system is via interferon beta, which is produced by the body as a natural response to viral infections.

According to Dr. Juho, while CD73 would have been instrumental as a COVID treatment, Faron discovered that interferon beta was being rendered ineffective by steroids and used inappropriately as a subcutaneous formulation instead of intravenously and acting on the endothelium. With many patients already taking steroids, the clinical trial for CD73 for respiratory infections was shelved. However, not everything was lost, as Faron is now studying the use of CD73 in conjunction with the CAR T cancer treatment.

Dr. Juho explains that CAR T treatment involves taking T cells, which attack specific antigens, engineering them to hunt for a specific cancer, and reintroducing them to the patient’s body. These new T cells will hunt down the cancer cells and kill the tumor. However, this treatment is so effective that it can cause cytokine release and hyperinflammation, which can be risky to the patient’s life. As a result, the treatment is often used only with younger patients who are more likely to withstand the significant side effects.

“We are planning a study in conjunction with a major cancer center in the US, where we will administer interferon beta before starting the CAR T treatment to see if it can protect the patient’s vasculature from the cytokine release and naturally prevent severe side effects. If this holds true, then the CAR T cancer treatment can be more widely used, helping more people overcome cancer,” Dr. Juho says.

From Grassroots to Global: MEPB’s Vision for Crowning the First Arab Professional Boxing Champion

By: Avoof

In recent years, the Middle East has witnessed an unprecedented transformation in the world of sports, with boxing emerging as a prime example of this evolution. Once primarily known for hosting marquee events in sports like soccer and Formula 1, the region is now rapidly gaining a reputation as a formidable force in the boxing world. From high-profile, multimillion-dollar pay-per-view events to nurturing the next generation of Arab boxing talent, the Middle East has set its sights on crowning its first professional boxing champion. At the heart of this movement is the Middle East Professional Boxing (MEPB) commission, an organization whose vision stretches far beyond merely hosting fights—it is about building a sustainable boxing culture that will put the region on the global map.

Under the leadership of Jose Mohan, the MEPB has established itself as a pioneering force within the region. With a clear mission to develop boxing from the grassroots level, the commission has steadily grown to become a key player in global boxing. “Our role is not just about organizing events; it’s about building a sustainable boxing ecosystem in the region,” Mohan emphasized. The MEPB has indeed made waves, playing a central role in some of the most significant moments in modern boxing history, including the historic undisputed heavyweight title fight between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury in Riyadh. This event, which captivated millions of boxing fans around the world, cemented the Middle East’s status as a major player on the global stage.

The numbers speak for themselves. Since its inception, the MEPB has sanctioned over 100 boxing shows, a testament to the organization’s rapid growth and influence. What sets MEPB apart is that it is the first regional organization to independently sanction boxing events, freeing the region from its previous reliance on foreign commissions. This move not only reflects the region’s growing confidence in its ability to operate on the world stage but also underscores the MEPB’s commitment to setting new standards of professionalism and safety in boxing.

For Mohan, the MEPB’s success stems from a blend of strategic foresight and meticulous planning. “We saw the potential for boxing in the Middle East long before it reached its current scale,” he explained. “There were several local promoters who laid the groundwork, and we stepped in to commission fights, including world title bouts and regional championships. This established our authority and built trust within the boxing community, both regionally and internationally.”

The Middle East’s rise in boxing is also intrinsically linked to broader government-backed initiatives. Projects like Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and the UAE’s commitment to sports development have used boxing as a key tool for social and economic growth. Through these initiatives, the region has been able to attract global attention and investment. As Mohan noted, “Boxing was relatively unknown here just a few years ago, but thanks to our efforts and significant financial backing, the sport is now firmly embedded in the region’s sports culture.”

Looking ahead, the MEPB has set both short-term and long-term goals to solidify its impact. In the short term, the commission is focused on strengthening the regional boxing ecosystem by increasing the number of trained officials, ring doctors, and referees. They are also committed to raising awareness of the sport and encouraging youth participation through outreach programs and educational campaigns. Mohan is particularly keen on developing a safety-first culture in boxing, educating both athletes and the public on best practices to reduce injury risks.

Long-term, the commission has even bigger ambitions. Beyond just training athletes, the MEPB is working to develop a robust infrastructure that includes regional promoters, managers, and coaches who understand the intricacies of both the sport and the business side of boxing. “We want to cultivate a generation of experts who can not only manage fighters but also run events and grow the sport sustainably. This will ensure that boxing has a strong foundation here for years to come,” Mohan explained.

Perhaps the most ambitious of all the MEPB’s projects is the Rising Stars series, which shines a spotlight on emerging Arab boxing talent. The series is designed to provide a platform for promising boxers from the region to gain international exposure. “Rising Stars is essential for the growth of boxing in the Middle East. We’re not just focused on regional talent; we want to create global prospects,” said Mohan. The ultimate goal, as Mohan puts it, is to crown the first Arab professional boxing champion within the next three to five years. “This is why we are investing in both super fights in Saudi Arabia and grassroots boxing in Abu Dhabi. We have a realistic plan, and we are confident that the progress we’re seeing will soon turn this vision into reality.”

Several Arab boxers are already on the verge of making international headlines. Fighters like Moroccan super featherweight Moussa Gholam, Jordanian lightweight Bader Al-Dherat, UAE’s super flyweight Sultan Al Nuaimi, and super featherweight Fahad Al Bloushi are quickly rising through the ranks. Each of these athletes represents the potential for the region to not only compete on the global stage but to win.

As these fighters inch closer to breaking into the top 15 rankings of major sanctioning bodies, the day when a Middle Eastern talent headlines a major event in Riyadh or Abu Dhabi seems inevitable. The MEPB is positioning itself to ensure that when that day comes, it will be the commission that makes it all happen.

The path to crowning the first Arab boxing champion may be long, but with the unwavering commitment of the MEPB and the growing pool of talent in the region, it is clear that the Middle East’s future in the sport is bright. As the MEPB continues to champion both grassroots and high-profile boxing, its influence will only grow, further establishing the Middle East as a global powerhouse in the sport.

How Do Electric Valve Actuators Contribute to Energy Efficiency?

In the realm of industrial automation systems, electric valve actuators stand out as critical components that significantly enhance energy efficiency. These devices, pivotal in controlling the flow of fluids across various industrial processes, not only streamline operations but also play a substantial role in reducing energy consumption and minimizing waste. This article explores how electric valve actuators contribute to energy efficiency within industrial settings.

Electric valve actuators use electrical energy to operate valves automatically, controlling the flow of liquids or gasses in systems. Unlike manual valves, which require human intervention, or pneumatic and hydraulic actuators, which rely on air or fluid pressure, electric valve actuators provide precise control using electric motors. This precision and automation capability make them an indispensable part of modern industrial automation systems.

Key Features Enhancing Energy Efficiency

  • Precision Control: Electric valve actuators offer superior control over fluid flow. By allowing for fine adjustments, they minimize the overuse of energy in systems like heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and processing plants. Precise control ensures that systems operate optimally, using only the energy necessary for the current conditions, thus avoiding wastage.
  • Reduced Leakage: Valve leakage is a common issue in industrial automation settings, leading to energy loss, especially in fluid processing systems. Electric valve actuators provide tight shut-off capabilities and better sealing than other types of actuators, significantly reducing the chances of leakage and, therefore, conserving energy.
  • Programmability: Programming electric valve actuators allows for the automation of processes based on real-time data and predictive algorithms. Systems can be set to operate at lower capacities during off-peak times or adjusted dynamically based on system demands, optimizing energy usage.
  • Energy Consumption on Demand: Unlike pneumatic actuators, which require a constant supply of compressed air, electric valve actuators consume power only when actively changing the valve position or maintaining it against pressure. This on-demand use of energy significantly reduces overall power consumption in the long run.
  • Integration with Smart Systems: Electric valve actuators are easily integrated with modern control systems and IoT devices. This integration enables real-time monitoring and automated adjustments based on the most efficient energy use, further enhancing the energy efficiency of the entire system.

Impact on Different Industries

  • Water Treatment: In water treatment facilities, electric valve actuators regulate the flow of water and chemicals with high precision, reducing the amount of energy required to pump and treat water. This not only saves energy but also ensures compliance with environmental regulations by minimizing chemical use.
  • Manufacturing: In the manufacturing sector, the precise control offered by electric valve actuators helps maintain optimal conditions in production lines, reducing the energy wasted on overheating or overcooling, common with less accurate systems.
  • Power Generation: For energy generation plants, especially those using steam or gases, electric valve actuators play a crucial role in controlling flow rates and pressures. This significantly enhances the efficiency of turbines and generators, vital for maximizing energy production while minimizing fuel consumption.
  • Oil and Gas: In the oil and gas industry, these actuators control the flow of oil and natural gas, reducing the energy lost in transportation and processing. The precise operation of valves ensures that the systems are not only more efficient but also safer.

Technological Advancements and Future Prospects

The role of distributors like DigiKey in providing the latest electric valve actuators, such as those from ETI Systems, is essential in ensuring industries have access to the most advanced and efficient technologies. These partnerships are vital for pushing the boundaries of what is possible in automation and energy efficiency.

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

The adoption of electric valve actuators also aligns with global efforts towards sustainability. By reducing energy consumption, industries can lower their carbon footprint and operational costs, contributing to a more sustainable future. This aspect is particularly important as industries face increasing pressure from governments and consumers to adopt green technologies and reduce environmental impact.

Further advancing their role, electric valve actuators are now incorporating adaptive learning capabilities, enabling them to adjust operational strategies based on real-time environmental and system data. This adaptation optimizes energy usage even further, ensuring that each action is as efficient as possible, thus paving the way for smarter, more energy-conscious industrial environments where sustainability and productivity go hand in hand.

Conclusion
