‘Charged Governance: Transformative Corporate Governance Principles for Private Businesses’ is your first book. Why was it so important for you to write this book? 

Countless colleagues, business partners, clients, and friends over the years each faced similar stress points regarding private business corporate governance. I wanted to synthesize those stress points and share solutions in a digestible format. Sharing knowledge with others who are on the same journey is important to me. Also, corporate governance has become a lightning-rod topic; I felt it was important to contribute my opinions to the public marketplace of ideas.

In recent years corporate governance has received a lot of attention, so what are your beliefs on the goals of private business corporate governance?

I believe that long-term shareholder value creation is the principal goal for a private business. However, the means to this end should be carefully calibrated with checks and balances inside the business, and in accordance with business laws. Also, aiming corporate democracy exists between owners and decision-makers is fundamental to corporate governance, which I address in the book. Checks and balances are very important because they can help minimize questionable decisions justified as being in service of shareholder maximization which may, in reality, create unintended and sometimes catastrophic consequences. Some examples of areas where checks and balances can be helpful are director fiduciary duties, business relationships with customers and suppliers, the safety and dignity of your employees, and how you manage key parts of your business ecosystem—including your lenders, investors, and communities, etc.

Can you tell us about your freedom roadmap that you mention in the book?

The five-step journey, or freedom roadmap, is our governance “lantern”. Think of this like a lantern on a dark forest trail at night—with a lantern in hand, you end up going much farther and faster, with extraordinarily less anxiety, than if you attempted to find your way in the dark without it. We illuminate pathways through these steps: awareness, identification, remedy, prevention, and freedom.

  • AWARENESS: To start, you must be aware of key corporate governance issues in a private business context.
  • IDENTIFICATION: This awareness can help you uncover existing problems in your business that need immediate attention.
  • REMEDY: Once existing problems are identified, you can get to work fixing them today.
  • PREVENTION: After you’ve remedied existing problems, you’ll be able to calmly scan your entire business with a preventative eye and build good governance practices before problems appear. Here, quality and reliable governance become part of your DNA as a business founder.
  • FREEDOM: Your journey through the first four stages helps you to arrive at the fifth and final stage. By freeing yourself from both anxieties stemming from your relationships with your constituents, and minimizing concern of potential business liabilities—which can both arise from weak corporate governance—you can now lay effective corporate governance foundations that bolster your business valuation and build a lasting legacy. There will be a generous dosage of charged corporate governance voltage flowing through your business.

What’s the profile of your typical client?

A private business with $5 million or more in growth, where the founders are shareholders who run and operate the business. We find that mature founders who welcome self-awareness about what is holding their businesses back from creating value are fun to work with. A product or service with a competitive advantage and an attractive addressable market. If there is not a strong go-to-market strategy already in place, the founders are willing to adjust going forward. Industry agnostic.

What’s it like for you to advise private businesses?

I love speaking with private business founders who emit an inner calmness. While healthy growth and earnings are extremely important, founders often face deeper anxieties dealing with corporate governance as their businesses grow. There’s a lot to be said about founders who have found freedom from those deeper anxieties and achieved a greater meaning. It takes focus to enhance corporate governance in a private business, and it does not happen overnight. 

Also, I’ve always had a tremendous passion for playing a part in helping strengthen teams and individuals. Sharing business and legal knowledge is very rewarding to me, and I believe teaching others what we’ve learned is important.

What is your favorite thing to do when it’s time for you to relax and unwind?

I love spending quality time with people who I care deeply about. This usually involves traveling to interesting places since I have important relationships across the US and globally. Also, spending time in awe-inspiring nature is a lot of fun and helps me to recharge.

Shortee’s love affair with hip-hop began at the tender age of five. Inspired by the likes of 50 Cent and other rap icons, he found his voice through the wooden microphone his uncle, Millz, crafted for him. Millz, also Shortee’s manager, recognized the spark in his nephew and nurtured his talent, teaching him the art of rapping, performing, and interviewing.

“I always had the courage to believe in myself,” Shortee reflects. “It wasn’t easy. I had to make my way, show up to events uninvited, and prove I belonged.”

The Rise

Shortee’s relentless hustle and raw talent caught the attention of industry giants. He signed his first record deal at just nine years old in 1997. This, in turn, led to the opportunity to star alongside Denzel Washington in the hit Spike Lee film “He Got Game.” A few years later, at thirteen, he secured a second deal.

Shortee’s star was on the rise, but the industry proved to be a fickle beast. Despite the initial buzz, his record label dropped him, leaving the young rapper disillusioned and adrift.

The Fall: Homelessness and Heartache

Personal struggles and setbacks marked the years that followed. Shortee found himself homeless, living in a shelter, and working odd jobs to make ends meet. The dream he had chased since childhood seemed to slip further and further away. He was homeless for seven long years. He was lost. But his uncle, committed as ever, wasn’t about to let him go:

Shortee’s breaking point became his turning point. Inspired by the artists performing at the Barclays Center, where he worked, he realized he had one more shot to make his dreams a reality.

“I feel like I got one more shot to make this happen,” Shortee says with determination. “It feels like game seven; I got the ball. I can’t miss.”

With renewed focus and unwavering support from Millz, Shortee poured his heart and soul into his music. Nothing is going to stand in his way.

A New Chapter

Today, Shortee Redd stands on the cusp of a new era. His upcoming album “Failed Just In Time,” a testament to his journey, is poised to transcend him from rapper to megastar. Host: Hello, Vadim! Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. Let’s start with how you got into the world of tennis. What inspired you to take up this sport?

Vadim Davletshin: Hello! Thank you for inviting me. Tennis came into my life quite early. I started playing at the age of 7 and was inspired by the coaches and players I watched on the court. Their passion and dedication to the sport ignited my own desire to become a tennis player. Later, I entered the top 50 of the Tennis Europe ranking, which became a significant milestone in my career.

Host: What are your most memorable moments from your career as a tennis player?

Vadim Davletshin: One of the most memorable moments of my career was participating in international tournaments where I was able to prove my level on the international stage. One such achievement was my victory in European competitions, which gave me confidence in my abilities. Later, as a coach, I saw how my students, like my daughters Nicole and Daniela, achieved success in major world tournaments such as the USTA National Championships in the United States.

Host: After finishing your tennis career, you became a coach. Why did you choose this path?

Vadim Davletshin: I have always believed that passing on knowledge and experience is one of the most important tasks. My experience on the court, including participating in international tournaments and years of practice with leading athletes, formed the foundation of my coaching philosophy. To confirm my professionalism on the international stage, I obtained a Personal Fitness Trainer certificate from the International Fitness Professionals Association (IFPA) in the United States. This certification is not only recognized worldwide but also confirms my high level of qualification as a coach. It allows me to teach not only technical skills but also to develop discipline, perseverance, and confidence in my students, applying advanced methods that I mastered during the certification process.

Host: What values do you try to instill in your students besides technical skills?

Vadim Davletshin: I believe it is important to develop not only physical abilities but also mental resilience. Tennis is not just a sport; it is an art of mind control. I teach my students to manage their emotions, work on patience and persistence. These qualities help not only on the court but in life as well. For example, Nicole and Daniela learned to stay calm in tense moments at major tournaments like the Mike Agassi No Quit Championships in Las Vegas and the FILA Easter Bowl in Indian Wells, where they achieved outstanding results.

Host: How do you assess the level of tennis in our region? Do you have any ideas on how it can be improved?

Vadim Davletshin: The level of tennis is growing, and that is encouraging. It’s evident that young people are actively interested in this sport. However, further development requires more investment in infrastructure and coach training programs. I also plan to continue working on creating innovative training methods that have already proven effective in international tournaments. For example, the footwork-focused methodology I use allows my students, including Nicole and Daniela, to consistently achieve high results.

Vadim Davletshin: I have several ambitious projects. I plan to launch a program for young athletes that will include not only training but also life skills education. My experience working with Nicole and Daniela, who have already achieved significant success on the international stage, shows that the right approach and support can lead to outstanding results.

Vadim Davletshin: Mentorship is the key to the successful development of any athlete. I always strive to be not just a coach but a mentor who helps my students, like Nicole and Daniela, cope with the challenges they encounter on their journey. Role models for them are always players like Roger Federer, who achieved outstanding results through perseverance and discipline. I also hope that my daughters and other students can become examples for new generations.
