“REAGAN” Surprises At Box Office

Dennis Quaid Starrer Nearly Doubles Projections, Projected To Finish Third In Opening Frame

Picture Opens With A CinemaScore And 98% Rotten Tomatoes Viewer Rating 

LOS ANGELES — Widely projected to make $5 million at the box office, Dennis Quaid’s “REAGAN” surprised box office watchers by nearly doubling that, riding off with $9.2 million, finishing in third place at the box office behind “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Alien,” while landing the No. 3 per-screen average on opening weekend.

Moviegoers gave the film an A CinemaScore and a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes in sharp contrast to the Rotten Tomatoes critics score at 19%. That 79% chasm  makes it the film with the greatest gap between critics and fans in the history of Hollywood theatrical films, surpassing the previous record of 65% held by “The Boondock Saints” which was favored by 91% of fans and 26% of critics. 

“We are thrilled to be sitting in the the top 5 with our first movie in a competitive market over this holiday weekend. We expect the film will continue to grow in the weeks ahead especially in the South and Midwest,” said exhibition veteran Kevin Mitchell, president of the newly launched Showbiz Direct which released the film on 2,750 screens. 

Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, “REAGAN” follows Ronald Reagan from his dusty small-town roots to the glitter of Hollywood, and then on to commanding the world stage. “REAGAN” is directed by Sean McNamara (SOUL SURFER, MIRACLE SEASON).

“REAGAN.” starring Dennis Quaid as the 40th president, is a cinematic experience that transcends the boundaries of a traditional biopic, offering a profound exploration of the enduring impact of the power of one man who overcame the odds, sustained by the love of a woman who supported him in his journey. Told through the voice of Viktor Petrovich, a former KGB agent whose life becomes inextricably linked with Ronald Reagan’s when Reagan first catches the Soviets’ attention as an actor in Hollywood, this film offers a perspective as unique as it is captivating.

California’s proposed AI Safety Bill, SB 1047, is stirring up controversy in the tech world. The bill has sparked intense debate among industry leaders, policymakers, and AI experts.

SB 1047 would require major AI developers to conduct safety testing, implement safeguards, and allow for third-party audits. It also proposes a “kill switch” mechanism to shut down AI systems if necessary. The bill’s supporters argue these measures are crucial for ensuring responsible AI development, while critics worry about potential impacts on innovation and competitiveness.

State Senator Scott Wiener, who co-authored the bill, defends it as a “reasonable” and “light touch” approach to AI regulation. He emphasizes that many of the proposed requirements align with commitments already made by leading AI companies. However, some tech giants and industry groups have voiced strong opposition, claiming the bill could stifle research and drive AI development out of California.

Just as some businesses have relocated for tax reasons, we might see AI firms move for regulatory ones. However, I’ve also observed that areas with strong, clear regulations often attract serious, long-term investors. It’s possible that SB 1047 could position California as a leader in responsible AI development, which could be very attractive to certain companies and investors.”
