Thank you so much for that compliment.  I never knew I was going to be a florist.  My mother passed away when I was 23 years old, and she was truly my biggest fan.  As a little girl, we were always watching design shows from HGTV to Project Runway. She would always say, “YOU COULD DO THAT LAUREN!!”  I grew up with the encouragement to push the boundaries and go further than thinking outside the box.  I decided to break the “box,” and whatever pops into my mind, I make.

Television productions have always been associated with extremely rigorous working regimes, stress, and pressure. In your experience in this medium, what do you think is the most important thing you have gotten from practicing it?

This is an excellent question.  After my first Bravo experience in Bimini, I said to myself, “I am never working with these crazies again.”  Five months later, I was back decorating the homes of Danielle Staub and Teresa Giudice.  It took a lot of processing to do, including dealing with my everyday clients, for me to realize the stress and pressure that they are under themselves.  For me, the best way to handle any situation is to be as helpful as possible.  If I can manage to take the stress off of a situation for one of my clients, that is exactly what I do.

Given the fact that many businesses in the current world are operated and conducted with the help of digital platforms, in what ways has social media influenced your business approach and, specifically, your relationships with the clients?

I was very successful running the floral shop, but Social Media is what put my name on the map.  That is where Danielle Staub of Housewives of New Jersey found my work, and two weeks later, I was filming her wedding in Bimini, Bahamas.  I have also made so many incredible connections, and now, all of these new ventures are via social media.  If you are kind and respectful and go for what you want while maintaining being humble- my advice is to send that DM, send that E-mail or make that phone call.  It’s all available at the tips of our fingers. Creating something out of nothing is one of the most amazing feelings in the world.

The floral business market has many misconceptions. Which stereotype do you think is rather popular, and what trends can be observed in your creative practice in relation to it?

The largest problem people have today in regard to dealing with true high-end floral designers versus supermarket bouquets would be pricing.  Florals in a luxury event cost money.   For example, a lot of clients would walk in with these magnificent Pinterest ideas, not realizing the true cost of not only the florals but the hard dedicated work that goes into it.

Of all the projects that you have handled, do you mind describing to us your biggest project to this date in terms of difficulty and triumph over certain difficulties?

Right now would be the time to ask that as I just signed my contract with Jack Studios and am reaching out for Sponsors for DIAMONDS IN THE SKY Benefit New York Fashion Week Show, September 7th, 2024.  Knowing I could do a show the proper and classy way to do it meant it was time to build my Dream Team.  I am one of those “I believe it, I receive it” from the Universe type of women.  Since the moment I had the epiphany that I should produce my own NYFW Show, there had been many downs, and in time, connecting with the right people and trusting my gut has served me so well.  All of us.  If I win, the Dream Team wins.

Innovation seems to be at the core of your business model. To keep on breaking barriers and moving forward, how can one sustain themselves in such an industry?

Most definitely, as I mentioned in an earlier article- Do not just think outside of the box.  Break the box and build something fabulous with it.  I find so much inspiration through nature and, ironically, my beautiful daughter Aurora, for who I am building this empire.

Kayla Hodges on Life, Sales, and Empowerment

A job in sales can bring enormous financial rewards, but the potential personal costs of those sales can also be enormous. Sales people cope with financial uncertainty, long hours and the pressure to perform, and balancing these demands can be incredibly stressful. For the 29.5% of women who make up the salesforce in the U.S., the pressure can be especially daunting, and for women under 30, the stress of a career in sales can have a severely negative impact on their quality of life.

Evolution in Action

Kayla Hodges, international speaker, podcaster, entrepreneur, and trainer is committed to closing that gap and has first-hand experience of the pressures faced by women in sales. Hodges is the founder of Elite Sales Women, a company committed to providing women with the tools to cope with the stresses of a high-powered sales career – and double their closing ratio.

The journey toward success as one of America’s female-centric trainers (and was recognized as the Female Sales Trainer Under 30) has been one characterized by overcoming challenges, and those challenges have been instrumental in motivating Hodges to focus on women in sales.

“For me, a career in sales was something I almost fell into. I was 23 years old, studying towards my dream job of being a doctor, a single mom, and balancing a fine dining waitressing job with the demands of being a personal trainer.” 

My journey started with a blog. I wrote an article that grabbed the attention of one of my clients at the gym. She shared it with her friends, one of whom was on the board of the Lamborghini Festival in Houston, and they wanted to know if I’d be interested in being an event spokesperson for their company.”

For Kayla Hodges, that was a pivotal moment. After attending a glitzy pre-festival black-tie event, Hodges was left without a ride home. Fortunately, her chance meeting with a fellow attendee resulted in a lift to her car and the revelation that her knight in shining armor had a personal relationship with Jim Rohn, a personal mentor to Tony Robbins. Her savior recommended listening to Jim Roan’s series ‘A Challenge To Succeed.’ 

Hodges devoured it, and after a meeting at a local coffee shop with her new professional resource was offered a job in B2B sales.

A chance meeting had set Hodges on the path to becoming one of the respected women in the U.S. coaching and training market.

Feminine Focus

Women in sales tend to draw on their life experiences to empathize with clients’ challenges. However, in many instances, these experiences are shaped by socio-cultural factors and life experiences that are different from those experienced by men. 

“It’s a fact that anyone’s earning potential depends on their state of mind,” says Hodges. “Women often have experiences during their life that differ from men. These experiences can range from emotional trauma, and family issues, including limitations placed on them to conform to toxic relationships, and even having to cope with pregnancy and menstrual cycles. Each of these factors shapes who a woman is, and often comes with a generous helping of psychological trauma.” 

Kayla Hodges has a background that extends far from the halls of academia, with experiences in behavioral psychology, strategic intervention, NLP, sales, marketing, and events. However, it is her lived experiences that have helped her empathize with women who have a career in sales, and offer them advice that extends beyond improving skills to maximize commissions.

Hodges is convinced that her approach of balancing coping, leadership, life skills and top-level selling strategies pays dividends for her clients.
