Video Games That Are Set in New York

From Times Square to the Empire State Building, there’s no shortage of iconic and timeless landmarks scattered around New York. In gaming as in cinema did, the Big Apple has been represented thousands, if not millions of times, inspiring some of the most widely-recognized media imaginable. It just goes to show that the city truly never sleeps. If players ever get bored of farming OSRS gold in Gielinor, they can explore a real-liife city, for a change.

In the case of video games, New York’s representation spans a wide variety of genres that show off the city in unique ways. Some games provide a picture-perfect portrayal of New York, while others would add their creative twist to the mix. Here are some video games set in NYC.

Spider-Man (plus Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Spider-Man 2)

There are already a lot of iterations of Spider-Man’s New York, but Insomniac’s work on the Big Apple for Spider-Man (along with Miles Morales and Spider-Man 2, for that matter) is the most visually impressive recreation we’ve ever seen, bar none. Plus, traversing through the iconic city via web-slinging and gliding is exhilarating.

It’s not a 1:1 scale representation per se, but how Insomniac Games depicted the city so beautifully is spectacular and set the bar. Spider-Man’s version of New York has a breathtaking amount of detail. It also helps that the web-slinging mechanic is the best it’s ever been—allowing you to wall run, zip, and swing at breakneck speeds.

Spider-Man 2 also takes place in the same open world map as the first game and its sequel, Miles Morales. Much like how Kamurocho is in the Like a Dragon (formerly Yakuza) games, Insomniac chose iteration over reinvention for its New York City, along with some changes. These include the addition of Brooklyn and Queens on top of the existing Manhattan map. So, if ever you feel like taking a selfie in-game, don’t be afraid to swing your way to the top of the One World Trade Building or the now-finished Fisk Tower.

Grand Theft Auto 4

Grand Theft Auto 4’s Liberty City is one of the most accurate video game adaptations of New York to date, even if it doesn’t call itself New York. If you try to drive around, you can find all the major landmarks, such as Central Park and Times Square. And let’s not forget about that satirical representation of The Statue of Liberty that’s holding a coffee cup instead of a torch.

The fourth installment brought many more side activities for play around, which was revolutionary then. It showed the city’s violent and gritty underbelly, from interacting with bowling-obsessed fanatics to receiving unwanted/spam phone calls.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game

Much like the movies on which it’s based, Ghostbusters: The Video Games takes place in New York. It’s the continuation of the Ghostbusters story that ended in 1989—a third movie we never got. With most of the original cast reprising their roles, like Harold Ramis and Bill Murray, the OG ghostbusting group’s slapstick humor can be seen throughout the game.

As a fresh-faced rookie looking to prove himself as a worthy addition, the missions take place in the ghost-infested New York during the early 90s. In iconic locales, you can use your proton beam to gobble up various ghouls, ghosts, and marshmallow creatures. Throughout your playthrough, you’ll visit iconic locations, including the New York Public Library, the Natural History Museum, and Central Park. The original game is a bit aged at this point, but the remastered version still renders a clean and relatively crisp representation of New York.

Tom Clancy’s The Division

Tom Clancy’s The Division’s rendition of New York isn’t where you want to be. While it’s visually recognizable, this version completely differs from the real-world location. After a virtual outbreak decimated the population, the city has transformed into a desolate quarantine zone filled with chaos and disorder as lawless thugs and bands of scavengers fight for resources and territory. You and your merry band of agents must liberate post-apocalyptic New York and bring order again.

The Rockefeller Center and Trump Tower are just two of the many landmarks in this game. Thanks to the incredible detail and atmosphere, the snowy version of NYC is a treat to run around in—especially with all the looting and shooting.

Assassin’s Creed 3

Before the streets of New York were filled with yuppies from Wall Street and towering skyscrapers, it was just an up-and-coming port town that was considered the heart of trade and commerce. If you want to experience what New York was like before, Assassin’s Creed 3 has an 18th-century version of the city.

You’re taken back to the right at the start of the American Revolution. As you roam around British-occupied streets in Manhattan as Conner, you can take out those pompous British redcoats using brutal finishers and assassination takedowns the AC series is known for.

Max Payne

Max Payne is a timeless classic set in a film noir take on New York. The game takes place throughout three evenings, with the city covered in snow. As a detective, you spend most of your time in shady-looking drug dens and expensive, high-rise apartments. You won’t find any skylines here, as that takes a backseat in exchange for a glimpse of the seedy underbelly of New York.

The weather plays a massive role in creating the mood. A blanket of darkness covers much of the atmospheric shots in the OG game and its sequel, complemented by the heavy rain showers. Max Payne takes inspiration from hard-boiled detective novels and New York-based classics like Taxi Driver, so it makes sense the game would go for a neo-noir tone.

Have Fun in New York

Exploring fictional universes can be fun, but sometimes gamers feel the desire to visit somewhere closer to home. While players might want to walk around Gielinor hoping they’ll stumble upon an Infernal Cape, nothing beats the feeling of walking around a city you’ve visited, or hope to visit in the future, which is what makes these virtual depictions of New York City so compelling.

The Eternal Flame of Chanukah: A Beacon for Today’s World

Chanukah, also known as Hanukkah, stands as the Jewish Festival of Lights, a beacon of hope and resilience celebrated over eight days and nights. This 2023, it commences at sundown on December 7th and culminates at sundown on December 15th.

Rabbi Daniel Cohen of Agudath Sholom in Stamford, Connecticut, sheds light on Chanukah’s profound meaning. He remarks, “Chanukah symbolizes belief in both visible and hidden miracles. It’s a time when America embraces the free expression of diverse religions without fear.” As the author of The Secret of the Light, Rabbi Cohen emphasizes that the holiday inspires us to dispel darkness with acts of kindness and steadfast faith.

Our role, he suggests, is to be catalysts for positive change, fostering communities that are warmer, kinder, and brighter. “It’s about respecting diverse faiths with confidence in our own and inviting others to join in building a world that is a fitting abode for the Divine,” he adds.

Reflecting on his recent visit to Israel, Rabbi Cohen draws parallels between the spirit of Chanukah and the enduring strength and optimism of the Jewish people. “Chanukah, meaning ‘dedication,’ reminds us of ideals worth fighting for. Over two millennia ago, facing religious persecution, the Maccabees, with divine assistance and unshakeable faith, triumphed over the Greeks, rekindling the Temple’s lights.”

He observes that today’s Israel, a tapestry of diverse soldiers and civilians, stands united in their shared values, echoing the Chanukah spirit in their resilience and determination to ensure not just a safe Israel, but one that shines as a beacon to the world.

Chanukah’s timeless values resonate more than ever today. It challenges us to honor and respect different faiths, inviting collaboration in creating a better world. It is a call to replace fear with faith, secure in our mission to spread light.

This festival reaffirms the blessings of America, rooted in the belief of religious freedom. It awakens a belief in miracles, both overt and subtle. The miraculous endurance of a day’s oil for eight days is a metaphor for our role – not to solve all problems, but to ignite a single flame of kindness and courage, transforming it into a blazing symbol of redemption and peace.

Rabbi Cohen concludes, “My recent mission to Israel, coupled with the upcoming holiday of Chanukah, underscores our belief that the Jewish people, despite historical adversities, continue to celebrate life with an unbreakable spirit.”

Chanukah is indeed a period of joy and community, emphasizing themes of light conquering darkness, the power of faith, and the wonder of miracles. The holiday is marked by traditions like the lighting of the Chanukah menorah, or Hanukkiah, where each evening, an additional candle joins the glow, symbolizing the increasing power of light and hope.

Pope Francis Supports Somos Community Care Launch Campaign to Highlight Role Of Primary Care Physicians

With the support of Pope Francis, SOMOS Community Care and the Pontifical Academy for Life, presented the declaration, “Thank you, Doctor” to acknowledge the role of the primary-care physician and highlight their essential connection with the patient in Vatican City on November 16th.  The campaign aims to highlight and value the role of the family doctor by calling on all social and political agents to refocus our health systems on the relationship between the doctor and the patient.

The healthcare system crisis in most countries often has a common cause: the lack of recognition of the primary care physician, also known as the family doctor. To tackle this challenge, representatives from the health sector, civil society, and religious communities have united to draft the “Rediscover the Family Doctor” Declaration—a call to governments, public institutions, and health systems to reestablish the central role of the primary doctor.

In his presentation, Dr. Ramón Tallaj, Chairman of SOMOS, stated that “this declaration recognizes the role played every day, on five continents, by millions of doctors who not only constitute the front line of our health systems but sometimes go beyond, becoming the good Samaritans of every person.”

In his speech from the Teutonic cemetery hall of the Vatican, Tallaj asserted that “the doctor assists and accompanies the most vulnerable. A world without doctors would be dehumanized as they transcend ideologies and divisions because they care for human beings and defend their dignity,” he concluded.

In the past, Pope Francis has lamented that ‘the figure of the family doctor has almost disappeared,’ with the risk that ‘the good quality of territorial health services is neglected; or that these are so bureaucratized and computerized, that the elderly or poorly educated people are effectively excluded or marginalized.'”

Speaking at the press conference, Vincenzo Paglia, President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, stated “that the relationship between doctor and patient is the heart of medicine and cannot be reduced to a prescription or even very sophisticated technologies. He emphasized that men and women are never just their illnesses. This relationship is part of the very essence of medicine. The limit that should never be exceeded is to take care of each other, and this has to do with the doctor-patient relationship.”

This campaign intends to encourage as many people as possible to sign this declaration, whether individuals or groups, foundations, hospitals, associations, communities, and all religious denominations.  

Mario Paredes, CEO of SOMOS affirmed that “without family doctors, so many people in the world could not survive. The goal of this campaign is to thank the primary care doctor for their role, their existence, their mission, and their value,” Paredes said, also highlighting that “the role of the primary care doctor in the health system and society is essential for four reasons; the point of access to the health system,  provide “complete and continuous care, prevention and education and “efficiency and cost reduction,” Paredes concluded.

Pet Passages: A Glimpse Into a Leading Pet Aftercare Service in America

Pets are quite the therapists! They bond with their owners, forming deep emotional connections. If you have pets as part of your family – you are lucky. Like every other family member, these animals come into our world and make our lives worthwhile. There comes a day, however, when we must bid them farewell. This goodbye can be as emotionally devastating as losing a close family member. The process can be long and very lonely, as many don’t relate to a pet parent’s loss and grief. What adds to the melancholy is deciding how to proceed with the pet’s aftercare and what will become of their remains. Considering the lack of awareness about pet cremation services, many people take it upon themselves and do what seems feasible. They want to say goodbye to their animal companions properly. But the better way to go about this difficult process is to entrust it to a reliable pet aftercare service. 

Ethical Afterlife Service For Pets 

Many individuals strongly believe in the practice of backyard burials to stay connected to their animal companions even after they are gone. While this approach may seem respectful, it can become a public health and wildlife safety concern in the locality. 

The legality of backyard burials depends on local ordinances; it is legal in rural areas but not in urban populations for multiple reasons. Many people do not have adequate awareness and knowledge about pet burials and do not bury deep enough into the soil, which is unsanitary and can become a potential hub for rodents, scavenging wildlife, and other pets living in the house and locality. 

How about if you choose to move? Do you leave your pets behind? Also, some pets are put to sleep using a highly concentrated anesthetic agent, “pentobarbital,” to initiate euthanasia, a common way of “peaceful death” to free animals from unnecessary pain. Pentobarbital has a very long half-life and remains in the animal’s body for over a year, making it poisonous to any wildlife that comes into contact with its remains. An improper burial can expose the pet’s body to others in the house or a scavenging animal, causing euthanasia solution poisoning. 

The Vision Behind Pet Passages 

Pets are family; these deceased animals were once living beings and deserve as much respect as any other family members. It is extremely painful to leave a pet to the vet for disposal, not knowing how they will treat or dispose of it.
