A Chance Encounter Leads to Innovation

One could say that Marcus Paleti’s path to creating Laureti Group began by chance since his background is not in the automotive business but in fashion retail and entrepreneurship. The story begins in 2016 when Marcus was waiting for a friend at a private members club in London. His friend was running late for their appointment, so Marcus decided to explore the club and ended up in a room where a group of engineers reviewed plans for a hybrid electric vehicle and discussed the revival of the Jensen brand.

Curiously, Marcus remarked about the project’s timing, suggesting that it might be too late to enter the market with such a product. As he spoke, the room became silent, creating an awkward moment, as he had inadvertently insulted the people in the room. Among the group of people in the room was the Late Tim Hearley, a former shareholder of Aston Martin of Jensen. Marcus attempted to defuse the situation but ultimately left the scene, feeling embarrassed.

Two weeks later, Marcus crossed paths with Tim again, apologized for his comment, and admitted that he knew nothing about cars and had no experience in the automotive industry. However, Tim was open to hearing Marcus’s perspective. After a few brainstorming sessions, Tim offered Marcus the opportunity to conduct some studies.

Marcus then spent nearly a year conducting research and studies related to the newly emerging electric vehicle industry. He shared his findings with Tim and proposed a business strategy. Eventually, the project to revive the Jensen brand didn’t move forward as Tim’s health declined, but this turn of events marked a steep learning curve for Marcus as he dove into the world of electric vehicles and the automotive industry. 

The light bulb moment for Marcus occurred during one of the many business trips Marcus took. 

While traveling on a four-hour car ride in India, he noticed that while he was the customer and the person paying for the car and the driver, he had limited control over the car’s digital features. Not having control of basic car features like air conditioning and the choice of music led to the realization that putting the passenger at the center of the automotive experience could be a game-changer. 

“Instead of the hardware – making the vehicle itself, I’m actually focusing on the product – what the customer is getting out of it,” says Paleti.

Marcus began to see the automotive industry in a different light, focusing on the passenger’s experience and aiming to streamline and improve travel for passengers. This perspective shift led to a new way of thinking and innovative ideas about how to make the travel experience more customer-centric and user-friendly. Laureti Group was born.

Building the Right Team

To bring this vision to life, Marcus understood that the focus was not just on creating a traditional automotive product but on delivering transformative changes in how people experience travel. He needed to bring together a wide range of skills and perspectives to shape the project’s success. 

He sought out industry experts with a deep understanding of car construction and automotive engineering; technology experts, particularly those well-versed in artificial intelligence (AI) who were vital for developing the project’s digital and technological components; and professionals specializing in customer experience, focused on aligning the product with customer preferences and needs. 

Marcus recollects about building the right team, “This is not going to be an automotive company. It has various elements beyond just automotive or hardware components so we had to figure out what the ecosystem requires and then put a team together from different disciplines to deliver the expertise needed for the project. Buddhists worldwide converged on October 29th to observe the Buddha-Stipulated Day of Releasing Lives, an admirable day dedicated to compassion and liberation. Originating in 2009, this tradition finds its roots in the teachings of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, who, after completing a monumental Buddhist activity, led His disciples in releasing captive lives and declared this day as a time to extend compassion to all beings. In 2023, the H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III Culture and Art Museum and the World Buddhism Association Headquarters commemorated this occasion with life-releasing events in Marina Del Ray, California, and World’s Fair Marina, Flushing, New York.

The practice of releasing captive lives holds deep significance for Buddhists. H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III once imparted in the Dharma of Cultivation, “All living beings in the six realms of reincarnation within the three spheres of the universe have been since beginningless time my fathers and mothers in the revolving cycle of reincarnation.” Furthermore, “The Brahma’s Net Sutra – The Book of Bodhisattva Precepts” explicitly teaches the importance of compassionately engaging in the practice of releasing captive animals into the wild and freeing living beings from suffering.

However, there are some controversies surrounding the release of captive animals into the wild. Some challenges include the potential ecological impact when non-native species are released into an ecosystem, the overlooked survival and adaptation skills of these animals when many captive animals may not have the skills or behaviors necessary for survival in the wild, and sometimes insufficient compliance of legal framework governing the release of animals in various countries and regions. These controversies have often overshadowed the true compassionate intent behind the practice of releasing lives carried out by some religious organizations. This has led to questioning and even opposition to the act of releasing lives.

In Buddha’s teaching, the act of releasing captive animals should be impartial, as all beings are considered equal. Nevertheless, this practice should be conducted with thorough attention to details and careful planning. Neglecting the well-being, survival, and adaptation of these animals to their new environment contradicts the core intent of “freeing living beings from suffering” and “prohibition of killing.” As Abbess Ruzun Ruohui emphasized, “Our acts of compassion are not confined to specific days or places. Guided by the teachings of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III and Shakyamuni Buddha, we believe in intervening whenever and wherever beings face dire fear or calamity, offering them safety and liberation from suffering. As the saying puts it, ‘We hold dear the continuity of their lives and cannot bear to witness their untimely end.’ Our driving force is compassion and empathy, with a desire to bestow happiness and freedom upon all sentient beings, relieving them from the burdens of suffering.”

Therefore, on this Buddha-Stipulated Day of Releasing Lives, the World Buddhism Association Headquarters calls on all Buddhists to follow local government regulations when releasing lives. With attention to details, it’s essential to protect the interests of living beings and avoid unintended consequences that may discredit the practice’s true meaning.

Greg Barones from Long Island who participated in the life release activity in New York said, “In Buddhism, we believe we are all one, and that includes insects and animals. We gain great joy when we participate in life release activities, as it is a reminder that a true Buddhist does not believe in keeping any form of life in captivity. We love all beings impartially. Todd Moyle from Scotch Plains, New Jersey, also shared his story: “I believe that I am making up for what I did in my life to free the fish. Most of my life I fished for crab and anything I could catch in the sea. In 1994 while returning home from a fishing trip, we crashed into an exit ramp. I lost my father, brother, and best friend. I was the sole survivor and had some major surgery. Years later, I listened to my wife and stopped fishing because I was killing. When I freed the fish, I felt like I gave the sea and life something back and I felt a peace in me that I was returning what I took. Also I felt that I had met my wife and had a new family for returning to the life that I took and was taken from me.”

Dorje Chang Buddha III’s guidance to all Buddhists emphasizes the importance of adhering to the precepts and disciplinary rules of Buddhism, while establishing great compassion as the cornerstone of their practice, along with the cultivation of humility and patience. Buddha’s wisdom serves as a guiding light, illuminating the true essence of the Buddha-Stipulated Day of Releasing Lives. These teachings offer a path for all beings to attain achievement and liberation.

The Gem Space superapp is an application with a myriad of diverse functions, serving as a gateway to a unified space of services for users. Superapp formats noticeably differ from messengers or social networks in terms of internal organization and provided features. Alongside the familiar communication functionalities, there’s an integrated blog platform and the ability to create thematic spaces within the superapp. While each of these services deserves individual attention, let’s delve into the specifics of communication within the app, as it forms the foundation of any communication application.

Personal Communication

In Gem Space, the primary communication services for users are located in the “Talks” section. It features three tabs: “All,” “Chats,” and “Channels.” In chats, users can exchange messages, send files, and make calls. The “Channels” tab displays a list of channels on the internal blog platform that the user has subscribed to. To see a comprehensive list of all chats and channels, one simply needs to select the “All” tab.

Files can be sent here without restrictions on size or speed. To call another user, one needs to press the call button in the chat with the conversation partner and choose the preferred communication format—audio or video.

With a recent update in Gem Space, the capability to call not only registered app users but also unauthenticated contacts has been introduced. This significantly expands the communication possibilities for both Gem Space users and those who haven’t installed the application yet.

To call an unauthenticated user, one must click the call button next to the intended recipient’s name in their contact list and receive an invitation link for them. The unregistered Gem Space user should open this link in a browser window, after which they can accept the call on any device—be it a smartphone, tablet, or computer. This service is currently available to Android users, with iOS-devices support coming soon.

In addition to these features, the “Talks” section includes other services: free transcription of voice messages, an integrated translator supporting 17 languages, and a chatbot for interacting with the ChatGPT neural network.

Group Chats and Calls

Beyond individual communication in Gem Space, there are group chats and calls. Each user can create such a chat and add users from their Gem Space contact list. Group chats offer the same options as individual ones, with the added ability to comment on other participants’ messages.

To initiate a group audio or video call, one needs to click the call icon in the corresponding chat and choose either “call” or “video.” Opting for “call” initiates a voice call to all chat participants, while selecting the “video” option allows for organizing a video conference.

Video Conferences in Gem Space

Video conferences in the Gem Space superapp are available to all users without restrictions. Unlike many other platforms where free sessions are limited by time or the number of participants, Gem Space imposes no such constraints. Free calls here have no time limitations, and up to 1,000 people can participate simultaneously. During a conference, users have the option to moderate it, share their screen, and present slides at their discretion.

Communication on the Blog Platform

The communication possibilities in the Gem Space superapp go beyond the formats mentioned. For instance, users can continue interacting on the internal blog platform. It comprises “Catalog” and “Feed” sections. In the catalog, users can subscribe to channels of interest, while in the smart news feed, they see updates from all the channels they’ve subscribed to. Additionally, blog recommendations based on user preferences at the time of app registration are featured here. Channel subscribers can react to and comment on bloggers’ posts, engaging in conversations with both content creators and other app users.
