Of Counting and Colors: Graphs, Combinatorics, and the AI Revolution

Combinatorics is the branch of mathematics that deals with the counting, arrangement, and selection of objects. It is concerned with finding the number of ways that a certain event or combination of events can occur. In contrast to Algebra and Analysis, elementary Combinatorics has few formal prerequisites. I argue that these prerequisites are known intuitively to many young children, albeit under more informal names. In this article, they shall be deemed the “Fundamental Counting Principle,” “Principle of Permutation,” “Principle of Combination,” and “Inclusion-Exclusion Principle.” I briefly sketch how these principles facilitate Neural Networks and Network Topology, which are some of the pillars of Artificial Intelligence – a topic that has dominated the news in recent days.

The first fundamental principle – aptly described by mathematicians as the “Fundamental Counting Principle” – states that if there are n ways to perform one task and m independent ways to perform another task, then there are n x m unique ways to perform both tasks together. By “independent,” we mean that our selection of the first task does not restrict or otherwise influence our selection of the second task. As an example, if there are 8 routes from Ithaca to Utica and 10 independent routes from Utica to Rochester (numbers are fictional and strictly for the purpose of discussion), then there are 80 possible itineraries that begin at Ithaca and end at Rochester. The second principle is called the “Principle of Permutation,” and is a repeated application of the first principle. A permutation is an arrangement of symbols where the order is taken to matter to the inquiry at hand. For instance, if we are listening to a concert that offers 10 songs with a single intermission somewhere in the middle, where we place the intermission matters to the overall itinerary of the program. Two programs with two different intermissions or orders of songs are fundamentally different to the people experiencing the event. Even if we were to hear the same songs but in a different order or with a different intermission, someone who desired to meet us when a particular song was playing would have to be apprised of the change in itinerary.

The third principle is deemed the “Principle of Combination.” Combinations differ from permutations in that a selection of objects or events is made without regard to order. Drawing upon the previous example, two concerts are said to be the same up to combination if and only if they have the same songs and a single intermission but the order of these elements is immaterial to us. There are clearly fewer combinations of songs in a given concert than permutations of the same. After all, if I have 5 distinct songs and play two of them in a row where I have determined that the order matters, there must be 5 x 4 = 20 permutations by the Principle of Permutation. The reason we multiply by 4 instead of 5 again is by the distinctness assumption. Once I play a song, there are only 4 of the 5 original songs in the program that stand to be played. If, however, I am listing combinations only – that is, the order of the songs does not matter to me – have only 10 possibilities to count. The original 20 permutations are split in half because I no longer care which selection is first and which is second. So far, we have not discussed an intuitive problem that arises when children learn to count, and that problem is deemed “double-counting.”

Mathematicians call double-counting “Inclusion and Exclusion”.  We may phrase the problem so intuitively and concretely that it seems to require no justification, although we would be misguided to believe that it is self-evident or can be taken on faith. If there are 5 numbered stones included in one pile (numbered 1-5) and 4 stones included in a second pile (numbered 6-9), there are clearly 9 stones in total. Permit us, however, to change the situation a bit. Suppose that the first pile of stones contains stones {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} and the second pile contains {4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}. That is, the piles are now taken to be non-distinct but the stones are still assumed to be distinct. How many distinct stones are in the two piles when considered together? If we answered “9,” we would quickly see that this guess is incorrect (there are two stones common to both piles), and we would have to subtract (or “exclude”) the number of stones “in the middle” to avoid double-counting. This approach yields 7 distinct stones: {1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9}.

Although these concepts are simple to state, they are ubiquitous in Artificial Intelligence and related fields. Some applications of fundamental Combinatorics include Game Theory, Machine Learning, Statistics, Computer Vision, Symbolic Logic, and Graph Theory. Ramsey Theory counts the number of subgraphs of a given graph. If one thinks of graphs in terms of associations, this theory becomes intelligible in AI algorithms like “Nearest Neighbors”. What A and B plausibly share in common is determined by the edges of knowledge graphs that A and B both inhabit. Matching Theory is a common AI principle and arises in Machine Learning as well as the theory of human and animal perception. What does it mean for two groups of objects to “match,” in a given abstract sense? Perhaps we are looking at population age demographics, crime rates, weather patterns, housing prices, or labor statistics. Once we define what “matching” means, we may construct a knowledge graph that represents the connections between and among the relevant categories. Counting the edges and vertices (e.g. points where edges intersect) can clarify quite a bit about the relationships among the variables that basic statistical analysis would miss. In addition to edges and vertices, data visualization relies upon coloring to make associations among data sets. Graph Coloring Theory asks whether it is possible to color in a graph in a certain way – or, if it is already known to be possible, how probable such a coloring should be in the long run. One may consider many applications: coloring zip codes by poverty rates, crime rates, proportion of commuters that encounter substantial traffic, population, voting demographics, or propensity to attend religious services, just to name a few. One may then proceed to color these zip codes according to a bespoke scheme that is determined by whatever research questions are of interest (e.g. zip codes in which a majority of commuters encounter traffic delays only in the winter months). According to publicly-available documentation, data visualization tools like Tableau, Cognos, NoSQL products, Oracle, Google Analytics, Microsoft Analytics, SAP, and countless others rely on such mathematics to make compelling cases for the acceptance or rejection of data-driven claims. Specific algorithms and capabilities are highly monetizable and often remain trade secrets via encryption and code obfuscation. Physical scientists know Graph Coloring under a different name (Chromodynamics), in which particles are assigned colors based upon their spin, mass, or other properties. Spectral analysis of chemical compounds, crystal lattices in molecules, attractive and repulsive forces in magnetic fields, particle trajectories in nuclear reactors, and spectral analysis of the light generated by cosmic radiation all have roots wherein the Combinatorics of color is indispensable.

Machine Learning engineers have yet another take on the same four fundamental combinatorial principles. A Neural Network is a type of machine learning model that is inspired by the structure and function of the human brain. A network consists of interconnected nodes (called neurons, just like the neurons in human and animal brains) which are organized into depths (or layers, just as they are arranged in the nervous systems of living things). As in human brains, each neuron receives stimulus signals, processes them to determine their plausibility, applicability, or propensity for threat, and produces an output signal, which is then passed on to other neurons in the network. Network Topology is the study of such connections, and its application in Machine Learning is behind such prominent trends as the ChatGPT revolution, Amazon rapid delivery, aerial and naval warfare simulations, and the logistics of consumer preference respecting advertisements. Spam filters for mobile devices and electronic communication use Network Topology to identify malicious messages and block or categorize them. Telecommunications satellites use the same theory to optimize mobile and wireless signals. Power companies use Network Topology to determine the locations of outages in the power grid. Without such methods, line workers would have to determine outage locations manually – a daunting task when millions of kilometers of line may be involved. Network Topology simplifies this task by a factor of several thousand.

I hope to continue the discussion of Combinatorics and its applications to networks in future submissions. These are quite possibly multi-trillion dollar industries that have the capability to upend the laws and customs of nation-states and disrupt the delicate ecology of industry the world over. Space in this publication is difficult to obtain and is rightfully rationed in accordance with readers’ interests, and I have nearly exhausted my share for this article. We have only surveyed the hundredth part of combinatorial applications in the vast and burgeoning field of Network Theory. It would be my privilege to continue the discussion if you, the readers, permit me. I endeavor to provide comprehensive resources for further study if you are indeed interested. In selecting the resources for inclusion, I weigh readability highly. However, I do not desire to cut theoretical corners in support of insipid discussions. The selection of works consequently represents a (hopefully) prudent middle-course between rigor and readability.

Respectfully,

Dr. Jonathan Kenigson, FRSA

You’re Smarter Than You Think

Your life is a lie, and you’re smarter than you think.

I was a medical doctor, but now I’m a self-regulated higher-order learning coach. In other words, I teach people to use their brains more efficiently when learning. Over the past decade, I’ve worked with thousands of learners worldwide. But I’ll never forget my first year of coaching.

At the time, I worked out of a semi-basement office. One day, I had a consultation with a first-year university student called Sarah. She was a shy, softly-spoken student who moved to New Zealand from Korea when she was 12. At the time, she was trying to enter medical school and struggling. During the consultation, I explored her learning methods and techniques. Sarah told me about her difficulties and anxieties. She had never been an academically strong student, but she wanted to become a doctor nevertheless.

An hour later, I gave her the full breakdown of my findings. I mapped out which parts of her learning methods probably held her back and how these caused her difficulties. Then, I showed her how they could be adjusted and the steps she would need to take. It was a diagnostic process I was familiar with from my medical days.

Then Sarah cried.

She broke down in tears in that damp basement office, sitting at my consultation desk. I asked her what was wrong, and she said, “I thought I was just dumb”.

She thought she was just dumb…

The reason this moment sticks with me is because it made me realise that my job was not to teach people how to learn. It was to help them see themselves for who they really were.

Sarah was not dumb. She excelled at learning outside of academics. But a life of inconsistent results in school and academic stress had convinced her that she wasn’t good enough. Despite using the same studying techniques as her friends and following the biggest YouTube study gurus, Sarah had never been academically successful.

The only possible conclusion for Sarah was that she wasn’t smart enough.

Over the years, I have worked with countless students like Sarah. Sometimes they are in school and university. Sometimes they are seasoned professionals who still see themselves as a bad learner. And what I have realised is this.

Your past failures do not reflect your intelligence; they reflect your past methods.

Shifting the focus from following others and copying success to examining and adjusting our processes puts us back in control over our learning. You’re never too old, and don’t let yourself believe you’re intelligence is fixed.

Over the last ten years, research has shown that the brain is capable of remarkable change. Research on neuroplasticity has shown that your brain grows and adapts depending on the pressure you place on it. Research on metacognition and self-regulated learning shows that you can learn to optimise your learning ability to overcome obstacles that felt impossible. Studies on growth mindset repeatedly show that if we believe we can become “smarter”, it helps us grow and adapt. In contrast, if we believe our intelligence is fixed, it holds us back.

My work at iCanStudy is based on helping people make this change. So, here are my top 3 tips for kicking things off. First, challenge your beliefs. Recognise the difference between facts and assumptions. Just because we believe something doesn’t mean it’s true. If you believe you “have to” learn or study a certain way, challenge it. Are you sure? If you believe you are only so smart, are you sure?

Second, make tiny adjustments and observe. Experiment with your learning methods, time management, or focus management. If it doesn’t work, think about what you could do differently and try again. Over time, these tiny changes build up to huge effects.

Third, learn about “metacognition”. Knowing just a little about effective learning helps you to do better experiments. You can find resources online, such as the many free videos I upload on my YouTube channel.

If you aren’t convinced this can help you, read what some of my students have said:

Surya says: “I used to have a strong belief in ‘inherent ability’. People and teachers would tell my parents, ‘Math just isn’t for your son. He doesn’t have the natural mindset required for it.’ But after my exposure to the iCanStudy course, I have come to realise that this thinking is nowhere close to the truth; that outcomes are not a product of some naturally gifted ability, but rather that they are only symptoms of processes… this has allowed me to now grow like never before!”

Lubhna says: “Despite putting in countless hours of studying, I still found myself struggling with exam anxiety. I had been conditioned to believe that intelligence and abilities were fixed traits that couldn’t be developed, and I saw setbacks as signs of personal failure. But the iCS program provided me with a new way of learning, one that encouraged experimentation, questioning, and embracing discomfort. Through this process, I gained the confidence to take control of my skills and behaviors, shedding the limiting labels that society had imposed on me. In doing so, I learned that it’s better to try and make mistakes than to live with the regret of not trying at all. The iCS program helped me overcome my fixed mindset towards intelligence and setbacks, opening up new possibilities for growth and self-discovery.”

He is the co-founder and head of learning at iCanStudy, which is focused on creating a lifelong impact by helping people discover how their brains work. “What does the science say? Very few people approach productivity and learning from this perspective.”

Mondex Corporation: Risk Of Buying Looted Art from Auctions

Image commercially licensed from Unsplash

Mr. John Doe, a New York-based private collector and connoisseur of old masters, bought a Titian painting at a renowned auction house in Switzerland four years ago. Displayed amongst legitimate works and endowed with a vague but plausible explanation about its provenance, Mr. Doe had no doubt about the legitimacy of his acquisition.

He was outraged all the more when he received a letter, signed by a French lawyer, claiming that the painting was not legally his and that it had to be restituted to the rightful owner. Mr. Doe’s Titian was indeed looted from a Jewish family in France by the Nazis during WWII.

The fictitious case of Mr. John Doe is representative of many cases of looted artworks that found their way to the art market, where good-faith purchasers acquire them. It has been estimated that the Nazis have stolen more than 600.000 artworks between 1933 and 1945. Many of these have not yet been restituted to their rightful owners. Countries have, to different extents, enacted laws in an attempt to resolve this issue.

However, auction houses, art dealers, and collectors continue to play an essential role in the further circulation of looted artworks. James Palmer, the founder of Mondex

Corporation, which specializes in the recovery of looted artworks and other assets stolen during WWII, stresses that the trade with stolen art is the third-largest criminal business in the world, after arms and drug trafficking.

The legal implications for the unsuspecting buyer fall under the categories of both criminal and civil law and are highly complex, and the legal situation might vary strongly between different countries. In practice, the legal situation will also take on different traits, depending on whether Mr. Doe purchased his Titian from an auction house, an art dealer, or a private person.

A significant difference is the asymmetry of information between art dealers and auction houses selling to a private person, which usually does not exist in a sale between two private persons. Galleries and auction houses hold a position of power in the art market because good-faith buyers can often not evaluate and monitor their risk efficiently. Mr. Doe might therefore assume, by way of consumer protection law, that the auction house where he bought his painting had an obligation to sell the work with good title – but in reality, this is not quite the case.

There is one significant legal difference between auction houses and art dealers: Generally, but not always, art dealers are the work’s titleholders. They purchase a work before reselling it to their client on their own behalf. The art dealer has a direct financial stake in the work and is legally accountable to the buyer, which obliges him to pass good title to his client.

However, an auction house, like the one where Mr. Doe purchased his work, acts only as an intermediary between the consigner and the subsequent purchaser. The auction house does not convey the painting’s title and is not subject to the Uniform Commercial Code or similar European regulations. For this reason, the buyer has less legal protection if there is a problem with the chain of title.

However, even if auction houses have no legal obligation to get involved in the restitution procedure, they will, in practice, prefer voluntary settlements with the good-faith purchaser to avoid reputational harm. In this case, the settlement is not guaranteed to correspond to the actual price Mr. Doe paid for his Titian.

It is important to discuss this problem from both perspectives. If John Doe had never learned from the French lawyer’s letter that his Titian was a stolen artwork, it could have been that a few years later, he decided to resell the painting through an auction house. In this case, he would be the bona fide seller of looted art. Auction houses tend to carefully navigate the interests of the seller and the buyer and go to great lengths to protect the seller’s identity, often to the detriment of the victims of Nazi looting, who strive to reunite with their family’s heritage.

If the victim’s claim for restitution is successful, houses will often choose to absorb losses, even though, depending on the jurisdiction, they could undo the sale legally, as there is a rescission clause in the sales contract. In the rare case of rescission, the seller would have to return the auction proceeds.

In major auction houses, like Christie’s or Sotheby’s, such measures will only be taken if the seller acts in a grossly negligent manner or commits deliberate fraud. Otherwise, the insecurities amongst bona fide sellers that their auction proceeds might be asked to be returned at any time would undeniably harm business.

Due to these auction house standards, buyers and sellers at an auction will, in most cases, not be confronted by local jurisdictions. Contrary to concerns with the chain of title regarding a purchase from an art dealer or a private person. Here the first question the parties will face is the choice-of-law. Since the application of one country’s jurisdiction over another may bring about very different outcomes, this question is highly sensitive and often vigorously contested between the parties.

In the case of Mr. Doe, if we switched the Swiss auction house for a Swiss art gallery, the choice-of-law would probably be between Switzerland or New York, where the buyer lives, and France, where the painting was stolen and where the victim’s heirs reside.

While Swiss law is perhaps the most favorable law for bona fide buyers, New York law is at the opposite end of the spectrum and protects the right of the original owners from whom the property was stolen to recover that property, even if it is in possession of a bona fide buyer.

French law is in between, but by nature, prefers the acquirer in good faith over the victims of despoliation. Every transfer of an artwork creates a new title, independent of the former, and possession often equals title for movable goods.

Contrary to auction houses, art dealers and private persons often don’t have the budget or the necessity to absorb losses in favor of their reputation. Therefore, alternative dispute resolutions outside the courts are rarer.

In either situation, one thing is for sure: in no other prominent international market do purchasers gamble comparably significant amounts of money on buying good title. Over the past decades, buyer sophistication decreased. When before, professional agents navigated their clients through the art market environment, today inexperienced and naïve buyers tend to bid and buy on their own behalf. At the same time, Art Law has only recently taken over archaic customs and practices in the art market. Still today, collectors are confronted with a great degree of opacity and unpredictability.

Simultaneously, a large part of the art market’s actors is unaware of their legal obligations. As auction houses are not incentivized enough, they often fail to do diligent title investigations and would, in some cases, conveniently leave out problematic provenance details to maximize their profits. As a result, many unclaimed looted artworks are traded yearly in the international market – which would not be the case if auction houses faced legal liability for such transactions.

Once collectors realize that they may be unknowingly contributing to the market of looted art by acquiring stolen goods, they might change their practice of blindly trusting provenance information in auction catalogs and gallery booklets. Professional provenance researchers, from companies like Mondex Corporation, can help a collector clarify the real history of an artwork they intend to acquire and ensure the acquisition of good title now, rather than realizing that what they are holding is a stolen artwork that needs to be returned to its proper owner.

Multimillion-Dollar Real Estate Maven Sam Zherka Reveals Why Vodkila Is a Model for a More Tolerant Society

Can the mix of vodka and tequila, a combination that raises a few eyebrows in the drinking crowd, provide some inspiration for creating communities that are less divided? Sam Zherka, co-owner of the liquor brand Vodkila, believes the answer is yes. While he is quick to allow that there is a big difference between successfully combining two drinks that are seen as polar opposites and bringing peace to a divided world, he believes that when you hear the story behind “the killer of vodka,” you will know that our divisions exist only in our minds.

“We all know how entrenched everyone is today in their own camp, whether it is political or racial,” says Sam Zherka. “It is very difficult to bring people of different ideologies together, including liberals and conservatives or African Americans and whites. In creating the Vodkila brand with co-owner Anthony Armstead, however, I have learned that there is another narrative, one that celebrates diversity, collaboration, and friendship.”

Back in 2013, Sam Zherka, who had already made millions through his real estate holdings, sat down to talk with Armstead, one of his family’s closest friends. Armstead owned Vodkila, which he had created in 2004 with Amarante Gold Member, and wanted to know if Sam Zherka wanted to be a co-owner.

“I had the same reaction that a lot of people have,” he recalls, laughing a little at the memory. “I couldn’t imagine what that could possibly taste like, but when I tried it, I was in. I could see that it was destined to kill vodka, and I was ready for a new business adventure. I purchased an interest in Vodkila and haven’t regretted it.”

Over the past ten years, the two men’s friendship has only deepened because of the business partnership, which has been strengthened by their differences. Armstead is African American and extremely liberal. Sam Zherka describes himself and his family as extremely fiscally conservative libertarians. He disagrees with Armstead on almost every political and ideological aspect, but he says it actually makes their relationship and business stronger.

“We respect each other and get along. Sure, we like to debate issues, but in the end, we are best friends doing business together and growing a brand,” Sam Zherka states. “Our families break bread together, and there’s a rock-solid mutual respect. Our different philosophies and perspectives are allowing us to build Vodkila into a major brand.”

Sam Zherka and Armstead have been growing Vodkila door to door and currently have about 1,000 businesses across the United States that carry and serve their product. With a major expansion on the horizon, they are focused on updating their website and expanding their inventory and delivery capabilities.

“It is a very exciting time for us at Vodkila,” Sam Zherka confirms. “We spent a lot of time meticulously laying the groundwork for this scaling up of our company, and to successfully ramp it up now is very satisfying for both of us.”

So, why does vodka and tequila make for such an unforgettably smooth taste? Sam Zherka believes it is for one reason: sometimes the perfect mixed drink can be found when you are willing to set aside what you think you know and embrace the unknown.

“Not to hammer the nail too hard, but really, Vodkila is a great metaphor for all of us,” says Sam Zherka. “We all need to choose more often to just let go of what we believe and see what the alternatives are. That’s when we can really live our lives on a higher, more meaningful level and make our society into what we really want it to be.”
