When using Keye credits to access a site, users will be able to use it for 24 hours. If they want to keep using it after that, they can simply spend more credits to extend their access.

Premium content

Jenna Lee’s “Heavenly Creatures” Asks How Much are We Attached to our Past?

Jenna Lee’s debut novel, “Heavenly Creatures,” is a retelling of the Buddhist legend of Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta, influenced by eastern and western spiritual traditions. The legend tells how, thousands of years ago, Tara and her brother were eaten by wolves after their mother abandoned them in the forest. However, Tara doesn’t remember that until she meets Sun Wukong, the heavenly Monkey King. Tara begins having dreams of her past lives, and Sun Wukong persuades Tara to embark on a spiritual quest to discover the meaning behind her present-day traumas by exploring her past lives.

Jenna Lee has been studying spirituality since she attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire 13 years ago. She’s taught meditation at UC Berkeley and has studied in Nepal to further her education in healing her ancestral patterns to then help others. 

It wasn’t until her time living in South Korea learning about Korean and Chinese philosophy, history, and culture that she became academically invested in generational patterns. “As a Korean-American, I had only grown up learning about American and European history,” Lee shares, “and learning about eastern philosophy helped me to think differently about the world and my place in it.”

After some soul-searching, Lee decided to quit graduate school in South Korea at the end of 2021. “I was feeling pretty lost,” she admits. “I began writing for 30 minutes to 6 hours a day, and the book finished itself in two months.” She says she took her life’s experiences in spirituality to retell the Buddhist legend of the two bodhisattvas. It was around this time she went to Nepal for 38 days of intensive meditation. She cites her teacher in Nepal as her inspiration to finish the book: “He is basically the Buddhist shopkeeper in the story.”

For the past decade, modern psychology has been exploring generational trauma and how it relates to the present individual. But eastern philosophy and psychology already have generated extensive texts on this topic for centuries — if not longer. 

According to the American Psychological Association dictionary, generational trauma is a psychological and physiological event in which the descendants of a person that experienced a traumatic event show adverse emotional and behavioral reactions to that event as if the descendants experienced it themselves. Essentially, it means that an individual can inherit trauma from their ancestors. “It’s like inheriting your parents’ habits,” Lee says. “When you go to the doctor, they ask if heart disease runs in the family — all this is part of generational trauma or generational patterns.”

There are different types of generational trauma, but an important one related to Koreans and which has informed “Heavenly Creatures” is han, an emotion related to grief or resentment. According to John M. Glionna, han is “intensely personal, yet carried around collectively, a national torch, a badge of suffering tempered by a sense of resiliency.” 

Most Korean literature has a happy ending, but more recently there has been a touch of sadness in some classic, beloved stories. It is through that national suffering, as well as her own personal life experiences, that Lee felt propelled to write “Heavenly Creatures.”

“The main theme of the book,” recites Lee, “is forgiveness and acceptance. The [difficult] secret to healing generational trauma is coming to a place of complete and loving acceptance of the past.” 

Lee says that it’s not about pointing fingers and washing your hands clean of accountability. Rather, it’s about recognizing that trauma is there, acknowledging it, and healing from it. “That process can be difficult,” Lee concedes, “but the rules are simple.” 

Through meditation, people can recognize where their hardships come from. When a person gets deep enough into their meditation, their subconscious can bring awareness to patterns — generational patterns — which offer ways to change or improve them. Meditation provides the opportunity to analyze how one’s character is molded by ancestral habits. 

It is through Tara’s spiritual quest that Lee hopes to bring more happiness into the world. What My Tinder Date Taught Me About Inclusivity

Dr. Liz Wilson, behavioral scientist and founder of Include Inc, has a bone to pick with Erasmus. The 16th-century philosopher said, “In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king,” implying that greater ability equals greater success. 

Dr. Liz bucks the scholar’s proverb by asserting that success depends on the environment rather than one’s ability. Admittedly, her unique perspective on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) comes from an unlikely source — a Tinder date

What Dr. Liz learned about DEI during a Tinder date 

One year shy of 40, Dr. Liz found herself on the dating scene. What’s more, she was attempting online dating for the very first time. She signed up for a Tinder account, created a dating profile, and met the first matches with a valiant effort. After 17 failed matches, however, she found she had lost all appetite for chit-chat over technology. 

“I cut the texts and emails short by telling match number 18 that if he wanted to meet me for a drink, then I was happy to get to know him in person,” she recalls. “That’s how I went into the date without much more than a profile photo.” 

In terms of knowing what to expect, Dr. Liz did not have much to go on. But armed with a Ph. D and an eight-hour workday to e-stalk her date, Dr. Liz pieced together a profile worthy of a forensic scientist. The investigation took a turn, however, when she uncovered an obscure news story saying her upcoming date had played for a rugby team called the Australian Deaf Wallabies. 

“The only word that caught my attention was ‘deaf,'” remembers Dr. Liz. “The next thing I know, I’m googling how deaf someone has to be to qualify for the Deaf Wallabies. Only three things kept me from canceling that date. First, I didn’t want to be ‘that person.’ Second, I memorized the sign language alphabet at seven years old. And third, his profile pic was not one I cared to turn down.”  

That evening, Dr. Liz met her date in a crowded burrito bar. The restaurant was so noisy that she found herself faking her way through most of the conversation. “I couldn’t hear a single thing he said,” Dr. Liz recalls. “Ironically, he understood every word I said to him that night because he could read my lips. In that environment, I found that I was the disabled person; I was disabled by my environment.” 

Dr. Liz’s takeaway from the date was profound. “We create disabilities when we create environments,” she says. “Ultimately, environments determine who is able and who is not.” 

That evening, Dr. Liz realized that excluding environments is nothing more than a human construct. In addition, she took her insight one key step further. “If we can create exclusion, we can create inclusion,” she reasoned. “After all, we create lights to allow us to see in the dark and ladders to allow us to reach greater heights. Inclusion is about breaking down barriers, making accommodations, and creating environments where everyone thrives.”

 

How to create the environments that lead to an inclusive world 

Though Dr. Liz’s concept for DEI is revolutionary, she is not the first to put the idea forward. In fact, her Tinder date happens to be a modern twist on H. G. Wells’ 1904 short story, “The Country of the Blind.” 

In the story, a traveler named Nuñez finds his way into a hidden Ecuadorian Valley isolated by steep mountains. While exploring the valley, he is struck by the oddity of a city filled with windowless houses and carefully curbed pathways. Eventually, he discovers the valley’s entire population has adapted over generations of blindness. 

Nuñez decides to use sight as a means of ruling over the valley but is quickly thwarted. He discovers that even simple daily tasks are challenging to carry out in a city designed for people who cannot see. The valley’s residents pity and care for him, though he eventually leaves the isolated valley, never fulfilling his plan to become king. 

Well’s fable illustrates the same lesson as Dr. Liz’s Tinder date — when it comes to inclusivity, environment trumps ability. In other words, in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man would probably not be king after all. Were such a place to exist, the environment would enable people without sight to succeed. 

“The first step to creating a world where people are included is equipping people to be inclusive,” Dr. Liz asserts. With this goal in mind, she designed the groundbreaking practical approach to including all people and intersectionalities using the 8-Inclusion Needs framework.

Dr. Liz envisions a world where people value differences. “The exclusion people with disabilities face is not due to differences,” she explains. “That exclusion is due to the barriers we put in people’s way. Celebrating labels will not enable us to achieve inclusion. The way forward lies in designing environments where all people thrive.”

Ukrainian Business Forum Continues to Empower US-Based Ukrainian Entrepreneurs with New Event

On February 26, 2023, a Manhattan-based G Gallery hosted a hybrid entrepreneurial panel event “Logistics and transportation business in the USA”. It adds to a series of events under the umbrella of the Ukrainian Business Forum (UBF) led by a Ukrainian-born international entrepreneur Denys Kanel and his partners Yurii Yurkovsky and Artem Sauliak. The mission of UBF is to bring together Ukrainian entrepreneurs and companies and give business owners the tools they need to succeed, regardless of their industry, size, or location. Denys believes that the program’s main goal is to connect Ukrainian businesses all around the world, both in person and virtually. He is passionate about helping entrepreneurs learn, providing them with valuable resources, and giving them access to the best opportunities to expand their businesses. This time, UBF’s event focused on logistics and transportation business. The conversation with Volodymyr Bondarenko was especially multifaceted and fruitful. Apart from talking business, Bondarenko told event participants how Kyiv residents and entrepreneurs live today, how many Kyivans have now returned from forced immigration, what are the internal displacement trends, and what are the main problems the city experiences due to regular air strikes. 

In addition, speakers provided the Ukrainian business community in the US with crucial information about the operational assistance Kyiv needs in the future as well as their expectations from Western partners.

To express national solidarity and support fellow Ukrainians affected by the ongoing war, Denys and his partners traditionally held a charity auction that managed to raise $73,000 for Ukraine. The auction presented very special items with a huge cultural and symbolic significance: 

  1. Oleg Verniaiev, a Donetsk-born Ukrainian gymnast and the Olympic champion, donated two medals he won at the 2015 World University Games in Guangzhou and a 2017 Taipei competition. Event organizers underlined that these medals are not just a memory – they represent the strength of spirit and the story of success of the renowned gymnast and all of Ukraine.
  2. A piece of the Kyiv Glass Bridge that was hit by a Russian rocket in October 2022. This is another symbolically charged item. The bridge withstood the attack, just as Kyiv and the entire Ukraine continue to withstand and persevere.
  3. The flag of Ukraine with signatures by:
  • Kyrylo Tymoshenko (former Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine)
  • Denys Monastyrskyi (former Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine)
  • Ruslan Stefanchuk (Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine)
  • Kyrylo Budanov (Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate)
  • Maxym Samilenko (Commander of the Army Aviation).

The signature combination of a business-savvy approach and a strong sense of solidarity is what has made the event so successful and impactful for the US-based Ukrainian entrepreneurial community. The following event will be held on April 23 in the same space of G Gallery. The focus of the next forum will be on construction and real estate.
